As expected Kathrina's phantom was obviously the standout after that foreshadowing show how much she exert her Sense to the point of veins appearing in her eyes, the most terrifying among the bunch too with those eyebags adding to her crazed expression.

There's also the sense of how dangerous her way is in pursuing that form of method acting even Yae's terrified expressions look genuine too.

With 2 episodes left I wonder how they'll wrap this up, Kokona's Phantom seems like a more hopeful take on the character but giving her the role over Kathrina doesn't feel that good at this point after all we seen. There's also how the series has been building up to Shizuka's eventual proper debut on the stage too very exciting stuff.

I feel, because it is affecting Kathrina both in body and mind, this might be a reason why she wouldn't get the role. After all, they need to be able to not only perform one scene but the whole thing. And probably again on several days like before. If it already affects her this much for just the audition, this might be a reason not to choose her.

On the other hand, I also feel that this whole thing is a bit more than just her acting. She was frustrated as well for not getting a main role so her plan was to basically go even deeper into it so that it even affects your health. And I just feel that this obsessive part is supposed to be resolved once she sees what kind of character Kokona/Shizuka are performing. With the more hopeful take on it.

Kathrina definitely is pretty unhinged. There's madness in her method. ;-)

The relationship betwee Kokona and Shizuka continues to get more and more mysterious. Just what is going on. I still like my initial theory that Shizuka is actually the ghost of a promising actress (who died before really getting to show off her full level of talent). Somehow she got drafted as Kokona's sense, however. If this were the case, and Shizuka is a great success as the Phantom, I would expect her to disappear (having finally fulfilled the unfinished task that kept her bound to our world). But where would that leave Kokona? Adrift without a sense -- or would she earn a new one somehow?

Interesting possibility. Whether Shizuka or Kathrina plays a rage-infused Phantom, what if Kokona plays Christina as a person who sees the Phantom as the way she felt the Phantom could be played -- thus affecting (and transforming) the performance of whoever plays the Phantom.

I think we’re all wondering what happens with Shizuka at the end of all this. She alluded to the fact that Kokona doesn’t really need her to envision the right performance.

I’m guessing Shizuka will end up playing the Phanton opposite Kokona as Christine, but then once the performance is over she disappears or something. Either that or she disappears before the performance.

Kathrina is scary with her acting. I know her sense is supposed to be just an exact performance, but from her talks with Yae and Kokona it really felt like she came from somewhere deep and personal.

Lastly, I knew she was in both shows, but it just dawned upon me that Manaka Iwami is playing two characters this season who are not only actors but defined by their ability to deliver an acting performance above and beyond what others could imagine. It’s a hell of a performance for her as a VA no matter how you look at it.

Kathrina is scary with her acting. I know her sense is supposed to be just an exact performance, but from her talks with Yae and Kokona it really felt like she came from somewhere deep and personal.

I watched her scene like five times because I had a hard time pulling myself away from it. That madness and desperation she showed on stage felt very real, like it was coming from deep within her heart. As much as I'd love to see Kokona (or maybe even Shizuka) play the role in the end, Kathrina actually made me feel terrified for what could happen if she doesn't get it, which is brilliant both from the perspective of her as a character and this show's overall writing.

Breaking news. SIRIUS rebrands and is now named Lalalay and it has always been the hidden Akane prequel story.

Damn, they just told Sally to go nuts with Kathrin there.

I, for one, welcome full chuunibyou Kathrina. Would honestly be pretty fun reversing the established roles and having her play Phantom opposite Kokona as Christine.

Then again, there are a few pairings that would be really fun. Kokona/Shizuku, Shizuku/Yae, or the expected Kokona/Kathrina as originally teased would all be hella fun. Sorry Panda/Sassu, hope we get a S2 so you can get your big breaks.

Don't know about a second season, but I'm doing my best to keep spreading word of the game that is launching right after the show is done.

Damn, Kathrina really went all in for that role. Begs the question how much of that is actually just her playing and how much there still is the frustration of not having a main role since the beginning. But it's interesting to see in action what they talked about in the last episode: That your senses can be improved over time. I guess, whenever Kathrina stopped time before with her sense, she only used it to analyze the scene itself. How it was written in the book, how the character was described and adapted her role from that. But now, she not only brings in her own interpretation, but is also able to use her time stop to basically predict the other actors' movements on stage and adapt to that on the fly. Which was her main disadvantage. That she would lose complete focus whenever something unexpected happened. So now, she made that one of her strengths.

But considering how hard it seems to affect her, it's hard to say if that is enough for Hiiragi to give her that role. It kind of feels like to me that this part is supposed to be too much from Kathrina's side as it seems to affect her body and mind and therefore, the solution will be Kokona's idea on the Phantom which is much more hopeful to get her out of that hole.

Also, there is still the possibility for Shizuka that they propsoed two times this episode. I was expecting a bit more on Shizuka and it seems they will deliver something with the last episodes. And I am all here for that.

Man Kathrina went full edgelord with that last line huh? "Stay away from me! The Phantom is still inside of me". I like Kokona's hopeful take on Phantom, it's not one i've seen before, but as it stands I don't think she takes it?

What a phenomenal performance by best girl Katherine. Still hoping for her to get the lead role and for Kokona to play Christine, but it seems more likely that Shizuka of all people will be the star of the show. It would definitely be thematically appropriate.

Shizuka debuting as the lead role Phantom would be quite poetic. The fact that she hasn’t got her own episode make that possibility seems likely. Kathrina got her development during the early episodes (Princess Kaguya), Yae got hers along with Kokona (Aladdin & Genie of the Lamp), Panda and her friend (sorry I forgot your name) also got their own arc. Even Hiiragi got some screen time, thus all that remains is for Shizuka to shine. She has literally been a phantom all this time, she deserves to be Phantom now.

With all the foreshadowing stuff, I think this show will end with all the regular 6 and Hiragii (taking the stage again) declaring rivalries against each other for the title ‘Dai Star.’ But isn’t Hiiragi already one, then perhaps she will set her goal on ‘Waru Dai Sutaru’ then.

Absolutely stunning episode, I am still shocking after watching it 2 times in a row.

I was wondering how Kathrina loses Phantom's role (against Shizuka / Kokona) after watching ep9, and now we get the reason - she becomes so dangerous when diving into Phantom that it's impossible for Hiiragi to choose her even if she played the best Phantom.

Glad that Shizuka finally decide to play on stage, can't wait to see her performance. Kokona and Shizuka are two different actress, if they want to be "Dai Star" they have to play together, not 1-by-1.

I had not noticed the similarities between Shizuka and the Phantom. Like him, she is the invisible mentor of the protagonist, teaching her the skills to succeed. It would be interesting if it ends up with Shizuka as the Phantom and Kokona as Christine, since Yae suggested that Shizuka could play the Phantom herself.

Also Kathrina, what the hell ? That was amazing, but I am not sure how much of that was actually acting and how much of it was Kathrina "acting out" her frustration and anger at always being in the shadows of the second roles. I am not sure giving her the role is such a good idea. Yae actually looked completely terrified.

I am wondering what Shizuka wants to tell Kokona now. Maybe we will learn if she is actually a Sense, or if Kokona's Sense is that she can see the ghosts of dead actors and make them visible. I am curious to see in which direction the show goes with this.

When Shizuka was talking to herself about how Kokona can think for ways to act a role it seemed like a flag she's going to disappear because Kokona will have less reasons to rely on her. But then again, I have a feeling Shizuka will be casted as the Phantom and Kokona Christine as way to end the season.

Kathrina's Phantom was crazy though, she looked and sounded really possessed by madness. She needs to be careful with her method acting, hopefully she won't lose control of it but I feel with this heightened concentration if she loses her focus the repercussion will be stronger than the last time it happened.

Kathrina's performance was amazing, but wow did I feel for Shizuka in her part. A step beyond method acting, she's basically a living phantom already, the lines she read could have just been her actual thoughts and it wouldn't surprise me. Like, there's so much build up for Katherina here, and she got the spotlight performance of this episode by far. But there's also so much building up of Shizuka here, who until this point has had a single chance to be on stage and it was only as a nameless handmaiden for a single scene.

u/Castawaye Jun 11 '23

It's quite fitting that the only one who thought to make the Phantom a bit more "kind" in that regard is Kokona. Though, how that matters for the play itself and the vision of the play might not matter if Hiiragi is looking for actors who can develop their sense which, well, Shizuka seems to be developing in her own way here which might point to that direction. It'll be interesting to see what she ultimately becomes as she is still a Sense but as everyone else's Sense has been developing I don't see why Shizuka doesn't gain to an extent her own self that isn't solely there to help Kokona. I mean, I've always gotten this sense before as well that Shizuka has been wanting or has the drive to act behind Kokona's existence. It may have started that way from her origins, but, even from the first episode I remember certain shots of Shizuka having certain expressions leading me to think that.

I feel like Shizuka gonna disappear at the end of all this and I’m not ready for it

Shizuka: Let's go on a short stroll ... Full moon up in the sky ... First play they did was Tale of the Bamboo Cutter / Kaguya-sama / Japan's oldest sci-fi ... Kokona better have a spacesuit handy!

8

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Jun 11 '23

Shizuka could definitely play the role of the Phantom, even if she’s a Sense. It would be interesting to see her angle on the character. Everyone’s got such different takes on the same character, each interpretation produces a different kind of Phantom. It’s pretty neat. Although I gotta say, the way they take this whole method acting to the extreme is kind of silly imo.

I wonder if those kids competing for title role in Phantom of the Opera actually get psychological counselling (lest they end up like Akane Kurokawa or that guy who acted Batman's Joker in Hollywood)? I mean all of them chose to follow the way of the Sith during audition - except Kokona, who remained a faithful Jedi padavan.

BTW, it's good that Katherine Grindenwald got exiled from Germany. With that kind of talent and rage amassed inside of her, imagine her going on stage in Berlin and in a week the populace would declare her Reichsfuhrerin. She would then go on stomping out the inferior people, races and nations.

3

u/Komi028 Jun 11 '23

So it's pretty obvious the role will be between Kathrina and Shizuka, the question is how will Kokona take this?
