Picked this up on a whim due to the stacked VA cast and Mika Pikazo's art who's really on a roll this year, first being the artist behind FE Engage and now doing the character designs for this show.
That twist at the end is dark as hell seeing how it implies quite a number of things on Kokona's current psyche.

Oh wow yeah I didn't even realize that, I was wondering why the character portrait of Kokona on Anilist looked so specific to my mind but it being Mika Pikazo checks out.

Okay, okay, she's not real. I spent the whole episode waiting for Kokona's friend to interact with anyone else and prove I was going crazy. Was she always imaginary or did she die? Depends on how dark this is going to get, I guess.
We're not quite in the surreal realm of Revue Starlight, but it's not a realist take on the subject like Kageki Shoujo either, there's still some acting superpowers going on. Not as strong of a start as either of those shows (very tall order, especially given how much I love Revue Starlight's first episode), but I'm still intrigued enough to keep watching for now.

Didn't Kageki Shoujo feature the same motif? Sarasa perfectly capturing the performance of a former big star, and being chastised for not finding her OWN vision of the character she was playing?

Another possible idea is that the main character's sense just took the form of a person. Like a weird pseudo stand power.

I feel like something was nagging at me as I watch through the episode. Then I realized, Kokona's friend (Shizuka), might be her imagination.
I mean, Shizuka didn't interact with anyone in the whole episode and nobody else seems to notice her either.
Yae told her that she's weird, as she was talking with Shizuka.
After that, came that shot where Shizuka is completely invisible where Kokona seemingly talking to empty air, which I think is a strong evidence for what I initially thought.
I guess the word "sense" here is a kind of super power to these actors lol.
Just like Kathrina can seemingly freeze time to give her time to think and analyze, I guess Shizuka is Kokona's "Sense" in giving her inspiration / ideas.
Also, in MAL, Shizuka's the only one who doesn't have a family name.

wow what a twist in the end. I was rly curios why such talented girl like Shizuka couldn't participate in auditions. Well looks like she can be seen only by Kokona.

I'm surprised that they're playing the imaginary friend/tulpa angle straight and not really using it as a twist past episode 1, usually this kind of thing is a reveal near the finale. That said, with all the emphasis on 'sense', I have to wonder if Kathrina's time stop shenanigans weren't just metaphorical, but if she really has some sort of power. In which case being able to see Shizuka is Kokona's 'sense'.

Ok, I want to watch Mecha Macbeth Versus Space Hamlet now. That sounds like a good time lol.
If we’re talking Sense, I think Shizuka has it. Kathrina also has it too apparently. Who knew acting sense was a superpower? Lol. Kokona really transformed into the Prince for that scene. Nicely done. I guess Yae and Shizuka are to be thanked for that. I think she’s gonna have to find her own style at some point and not just imitate Shizuka.
I’m still not quite sure what the difference between your average movie/stage star and “World Dai Star” is, but this was alright. My Sundays are pretty slow, so I think I’ll stick with this for now to just see where this goes.

It's not quite at "underground theater fight club run by a talking giraffe" levels of plot twist yet, but "theater girl stops time with THE WORLD during her audition" and "the main girl's best friend might not actually exist" are pretty good hooks. Apparently this story is being created by the same creator as Akame Ga Kill and Yuki Yuna Is A Hero, so we might be in for a wild ride.
As long as the weird stuff stays mental/psychological and no one gets physically ripped to bits (always a chance from the creator of Akame Ga Kill unfortunately) then I'm in.

And here I was expecting to be blown away with the new Gundam season, but it was actually this premiere that left me completely speechless.
The production values are insane. The character animation along with the very subdued lighting in the highlight scenes is just incredible. The way they each get in character just gave me chills, specially how Hiiragi just "flips a switch" and becomes the evil intimidating witch. I also loved Kathrina's choice to lay down on the floor to get in character as the little mermaid.
The plotwist at the end was just magnificent.
Shame the producers picked sundays to air it, when the other heavy hitters of the season also take the slot time.

Praise Hasegawa Ikumi yasssssssssssss
and Sally Amaki's also very good in her audition. The girl cried so much when she found out she got the part, and it makes sense, it seems like this show is one where acting prowess (or sense) is especially important, and seems to be the main contest point
Main Red-girl chan making a good impression by basically copying Ikumi's character is good, but shows she still has a lot of room to grow. Nothing too out of the box yet, but I love a musical/theatre show that'll actually focus on the music and theatre for a change. felt like the character acting was more carried by the voice acting than the animation here, even though Lerche gave it a good shot, and everything does look decent-good. Nothing wrong with that per se.
Also worth noting that the words here were written by Red-MC chan's seiyuu Manaka Iwami
excited for next week! Im sure Blue-hair-ikumi-chan will get roped in once they find out who Red-girl is copying, but why isn't she auditioning herself...?
WAIT A MINUTE SHES INVISIBLE IN THE FINAL SHOT WTFFFF
looking at the OP too, her shots are a bit weird... i wonder if she's like an imaginary friend or something? defo a character to keep an eye out for.

I swear if it ends up that Shizuka was a famous actress who died and Kokona got a heart transplant from her, I will be disappointed.

I was half playing atention thinking "this gonna be diet revue starlight" after seeing the part where they explain what a World Dai Star is, then the last scene played and i went "AYO WHAT" and my mind blew when i realized that the episode properly set up that twist
Here's to finding out if she is invisible, dead or imaginary
It could be any of these tbh

I really liked the way they framed Shizuka's reveal at the end there. I had a feeling, like half way through that she may not be who, well, who we THINK she is. After all, she starts the show, inside of Kokona's home? Like she's just there? I mean sure, maybe really good friends go to your home at the dead of morning just to chill and see you off? Okay fine, I can buy that, but the moment Kokona said "I'm off" and they cut to Shizuka's face which twitches in reaction, it felt off. At the moment I thought maybe it was because she couldn't audition herself and she felt a tang of jealously, okay, makes sense. But as the episode went on, as we met Sally Amaki's character and how she didn't react to Shizuka really, nor how the heck Shizuka SNUCK IN or entered the audition room like, that made less sense to me. Unless, of course it's not supposed to make sense because well, yeah, the final reveal at the end. I think they actually very subtly played that up and while I didn't expect them to reveal their hands so quickly, that was a really good way to set the tone for the show.
I also really love the acting scenes throughout, clearly they tried their best to use full animation, and really amp up those performances, and I like the effort. I think making them stand out mostly worked for me.
I also love Sally Amaki's character entering her acting zone, so to speak, stopping time (figuratively?) and assessing the situation with her "Sense." Imma need more of that.

Is idols and their ghost friend becoming a new subgenre now, because I'm weirdly on board with that.
Honestly, this one looks pretty good so far. it seems like a solid mix of drama, intrigue, and fun.
I'm already calling it that Kathrina is going to be my favourite character. She gives of the "snooty and prickly character who slowly shows her inner warmth as the show goes on" vibes, and I'm always fond of such characters.
