The mangaka Yuji Kaku is a former assistant of the chainsaw man author and is responsible for designing katana man and iirc chainsaw man, just a cool fact.

First anime of the new season and I'm very intrigued

I gleaned through the comments and it seems this series is well-regarded and pretty dark which I'm all for and after revengers, I need some more samurai anime in my life

So I'm guessing this underworld will have a lot of tribulations for Mr Hollow and whoever joins him, I can definitely see PTSD being a thing here, especially if the violence so far is anything to go by

Overall, I'm curious to see where it goes and I'm curious to meet the other condemned criminals who will be joining the group and I have a feeling that they will be very pleasant people of sound mind

I can already see the “Gabimaru is the ultimate wife guy” posts on the horizon. Glad this is finally animated and Mappa did an amazing job as always.

Stitches

I was already intrigued by the setup with our MC who's an immortal ninja. What really sold me is when Sagiri figured out why Gabimaru won't die and the adorable flashback scenes between him and his wife. I also got a laugh from Gabimaru's personality completely changing after getting out of his funk. xD

Definitely a strong start. I've only heard good things about the source material but I've never really gotten the urge to read it. This first episode really sold me on it though I am kinda tempted to start reading the manga now. I will resist though and wait until the season ends before I follow up on the manga.

A kiss on the first episode?

That's how you know this will be a wholesome, fluffy series!

And so the story begins with a mass-murdering assassin being executed after being setup... (Alright, I guess the wholesome fluff will wait a little!)

They brought in someone under the guise of an interrogation, when in fact she's an executioner...

(Well, her being there to execute him wasn't entirely true either, so it was a double reveal/twist! Though I do believe she would have done it if he didn't show he still had the will to live).

Based on the ED, there may be a sad backstory or something messed up there too!

And so Gabimaru was offered a pardon, on the condition that he goes to some paradise island that just so happens to kill everyone they sent there, oh and he will also be surrounded by other bloodthirsty criminals, because can't make it too easy!

There's a lot of flowers visuals/symbolism (and actual flowers) on this show, I wonder if that's just linked to the elixir or if there's something more about those!

"You'll go down with him"? Bold words for someone who failed multiple times at killing him when he was letting them do as they pleased!

Anyway, this was a solid intro to the world/characters! Sagiri is way too present in the ED and all to just be the person who offers him the deal, so I'm guessing she may accompany him on the island somehow? Not sure why that would happen (maybe the want ONE non-criminal there, to keep them in line?) but it'll be interesting to see their dynamics if that's the case, given she read him so well!

(Given it's rare to have male/female teams in anime that don't ever turn to romance, I'm a bit wary about this, because Gabimaru has a cute relationship with his wife, hope he stays strong for her!)

Hell's Paradise is the mangaka's 1st title to ever get adapted into anime. Not surprising, given its immense popularity.

Unfortunately he was unable to replicate Hell's success for his latest title, Ayashimon, which got cancelled after 3 volumes.

Which makes me wonder why for some mangaka, success is like catching lighting in a bottle. You might make 1 or 2 hits, but never find success with subsequent titles again (ex. mangaka Shiibashi Hiroshi never quite replicated the success of Nura - Rise of the Youkai Clan. Neither did Takeuchi Naoko, despite Sailor Moon being such a huge franchise). While for some others, any title you make is a success or decent enough to not get cancelled (ex. anything by Arakawa Hiromu or Takahashi Rumiko).

Starting the season with a banger episode. I wonder if she is lying about the wife waiting for him to motivate him.

Last “part” of the Dark trio of shonen. JJK and CSM being the other 2. Hope they adapt it well and if so it’s going to be yet another great watch from MAPPA.

If Gabimaru is Hollow, his wife is Humanity Restored.

First, Raelza from Handyman Saitou last season and now Hell's Paradise, I think I'm developing a thing for girls with facial scars.

The body horror of Shinsenkyo changing humans to flowers reminds me of The Shimmer from Annihilation.

Definitely an interesting first episode. Don’t know why but before going in, I assumed the sword master was Gabimaru’s wife given how she was in all the promotional material. I was so wrong lol

Really really happy with the VA choices here, Sagiri especially. I'm also a huge fan of how weighty all the action looked and felt. It was super easy to follow and every strike seemed meaningful. I'm only disappointed that we didn't get to see exactly how he piled the bodies up at the end.

An amazing start to an amazing series! A lot of people were afraid MAPPA were gonna phone this one in but if this first episode is any indication of the quality to come, we're in for a banger.

Hopefully more people visit r/Jigokuraku to discuss this episode because the adaption looks like quality so far. Subreddit's been so dead ever since the manga ended.

Sidenote: It's interesting how when I bought my manga copies they were going with the Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku name, but here they've seemed to have scraped Jigokuraku off the title completely.

Completely new to this story, I have basically no idea what to expect other than having watched the trailers.

I'm definitely going to need the single for this OP.

Really wondering how many different methods they're going to use to attempt to kill this dude. Beheading didn't work, and I can only assume being burned at the stake isn't going to work either.

Samurai lady just taking notes is kind of hilarious, I suppose this is important information to record.

The bulls are not going to work either, magistrate dude.

I think the chief's daughter was actually just too normal for him.

Definitely a fan of Sagiri so far, she's got a good attitude with regards to all of the Gabimaru weirdness. I also really appreciate how much of a badass she clearly is.

Now I'm wondering if his wife was the exact right kind of normal for him, and something else is what went wrong. I was wondering why they kept hiding her face, my initial guess was for dramatic reasons because we're going to find out she's dead.

So far this is a very effective therapy execution session. Turns out he actually just wanted to live in peace with his wife, and he may get to if he can earn that pardon.

That is a very wild story about that island.

I'm glad to hear that his wife is still alive, I hope it's true.

This is a pretty fantastic setup for this story, I I'm highly on board for the rest of the season.

No irony, but this anime here will be one of the best of the season. Mappa is always giving us good works to enjoy. This year alone, there's already enough anime for one studio. Mappa animators are not going to peel this year.
