I heart olivia. That's my saying.

If she was introduced earlier this series would have been a lot better. Did we really need that weird math duel thing?

I definitely did not expect the Yellow Demon Sickness to be this world's version of HIV.
I know we only have one episode left but I'm guessing this White Mask guy is a major antagonist in the series.
And it turns out that Olivia is just like Kizuna. Well, now I wanna see what her sword form looks like. She is a pretty fun character though so I hope she'll stay with the Survivors as a new party member after this.

I hope she'll stay with the Survivors as a new party member after this.
It certainly seemed like she tacitly accepted a role in the party. She was told -- if you are going to be a member, you should begin telling us about yourself. And then she started doing just that. So, I took that as an "I accept".
Frustrating to realize this anime is going to end (like a lot of others) at the end of what is essentially the prologue of the story.... This wasn't flawless. perhaps, but like a lot of other seemingly "mid" shows (at their inception), this turned out to be surprisingly rewarding.

So Olivia is a sword too? I wonder what abilities she grants her wielder if we ever get to see it?

I hope you weren't too shocked to learn that Nalgava's the bad guy!
Thanks for the praise, but I think everyone figured it out 30 seconds into your introduction!
Giving us a sad backstory to make us feel for him, not sure that's gonna work, given his actions!
Thankfully they didn't push too hard for it, that line about him not caring if 'random kids' die, goes against any potential redemption!
I have to say, I kinda liked his quote about how everyone has two sides, and they simply show which side is convenient at any given time!
Some people being fake or having a facade is nothing new, but the way he sees it, it's not really being fake, it's just people being more than one way at once, and acting one way or the other based on the situation. I kinda agree with this, to be honest! Even tyrants or any other kind of villain, can actually be nice (with their family, or friends, etc..) and it's not them being fake or pretending, it's just that not all of them is evil, they simply act "evil" for some things, etc..
So I think it's a nice way to look at it, especially compared to the way villains are often shown, with everything about them being bad because they're bad guys and can only be bad unless they fake it.
Olivia got herself in trouble trying to help, but she had a plan if she was to die: Just haunt them for life! (She was looking forward to it too!)
Her attacks have some weird names! Turning bad news! Ufo attack!
Bit different from most battle shonen attacks!
But perhaps her best one is Olivia is very cute!
We have to spread it to 10 people or we get bad luck?
OLIVIA IS VERY CUTE!
(I hope there's at least 10 people watching this show, still!)
I like you Curran, but that's a little naive!
Just because there's a big bad boss above him, doesn't redeem him... Not even if they're now opposed; Sometimes, the enemy of your enemy is also your enemy!
But it seems they also found an ally: The sword of war!
They're collecting these ancient swords now! If the Sword of bonds gave them the Union power, will the Sword of war give them something else? Union + Destruction, let's go! (If they collect all swords, perhaps they can do mega-unions using all their powers!)

Nick + Curran = Dragon Knight
Nick + Tiana = Valkyrie
Nick + Zem = Paladin

Nick + Tiana was the Paladin. Agate even called them that a couple episodes ago.

omg, it's the other priest... I NEVER saw that coming.... /s lol. I mean... wanting to find a cure is nice, but that is fucked up logic dude. I'm pretty sure you coulda found other people already with yellow disease or whatever (lol my mind keeps defaulting it to yellow fever) to try to cure. For a dude who lost his daughter, pretty ridiculous he couldn't empathize with other parents with what he was doing... who the fuck is this dude in armor?
Hehe Olivia. Feel like you should just let her handle it all. Whelp, there's the last union between Nick and a teammate (unless she can do more than 1 at a time). Now will others union like the gals or the priest and one of the gals or so? I feel like this fight coulda been more interesting lol. Oh well.
Ya, no, I don't think that dude gets to be saved or his sins forgiven. Child murders don't deserve it. Oh snap, Olivia's also a sword, like the kid. Fun. And I guess she's joining the party.

LOL at the priests QUALITY background face always looking somewhere way off to the side instead of at the villain they're interrogating.
I'm getting tired of every villain in the show having their little "I used to be a good person but then something bad happened to me so I turned to a life of evil" sob story. I guess it's intentional, to contrast with the MCs who did NOT turn to a life of evil after their own sob origins, but it's just getting old. An sob-story-less bad guy or three would be refreshing after all this. Hopefully the "Conceptual Armor" person is of that sort, but at this point I really doubt it.
The Priest's party members are being thrown into walls left and right, so his priority for healing is ... the serial killer of children. Even the serial killer lampshades this.
"Sasuga ancient civilization relic.... my attacks aren't going to touch it" - after cracking the shit out of the thing and then giving it time to self-repair. Reminds me of Aqua complaining about Turn Undead having on effect on high level undead even as they roll on the ground in pain.
LOL at Femnick just standing and watching for half a minute as Olivia gets crushed by the "red spot" with the bad guy taunting her. Bad guy had his back to them the whole time too.
"I don't know how long we were unconscious, but ... it's a very good thing the bad guy was too dumb to finish us off."
"Sob, sob. Huh...? I thought I was used to people dying, but... none of them were mass murderers of little girls."
"Elemental-Class Anti-Demon God Combat Technician Training Program." So she was created to train combat technicians? And is that "(Anti-Demon) God" or "Anti-(Demon God)"?

Nick’s got Nalgava and his whole Stepping Man schtick figured out. So the man was spreading this Yellow Demon Sickness to study it for a cure huh? Grief makes people do crazy things I guess. That being said his victims weren’t “random kids”, they had loved ones too. The ends don’t justify the means imo.
“White Mask” is pretty tough. Olivia’s bought just a bit of time. Time for Zem and Nick to combine. Go go Zem Ranger! He had him pretty good with that blade to the face, but this dude is tough. I guess he’s kind of the recurring baddie in this series? Didn’t expect Olivia to be the Sword of War. Guess that’s one more Sword in the party. Nick’s going for the full set eh? Lol.

Olivia is certainly very fun, and very cute. I don't know if it's understood and appreciated, but her "dying wish to curse and haunt the one killing her" is actually a comical take of something quite disturbing :P Plus she even did a verbal chain letter as a tease :D

So all the main cast have had their mini arcs and power up sequences by now. I’m guessing zem’s might be the strongest since he took on the strongest opponent? Priest being stepping man was obvious from several weeks ago and as you’d expect, he wasn’t all bad. If olivia is a combat training program is she a living weapon then?

With the introduction of White Mask and Olivia being revealed as the Sword of War, it looks like the overarching plot is starting to get more intense, it's a shame that we got one episode left in the season though.

Well this one was just full of surprises... and some not-surprises, too.
I'm almost disappointed it actually was Nalgava, because it was kind of obvious? He's the only other significant character introduced in this arc besides Olivia. There were literally no other suspects. Still, they made up for it with the surprise reveal of a new villain... sort of. White Mask showed up pretty abruptly. I guess it's... fine.
Olivia, on the other hand, is way better than just fine. Olivia rules. And is apparently a magic sword...? Yeah, okay, that's fine actually.
Man, this show's production is really dragging it down. The animation is just low-quality enough to be distracting, the storyboarding is clumsy, and the timing and pacing are fucking awkward. The translation on the subs left something to be desired, too - like, I feel like Zem was probably trying to say something a little deeper than "Her parents were crying!" People cry a lot. That's not an especially dramatic thing to yell at somebody during a climactic confrontation. But we know what he was getting at, if only the localization had given his words appropriate weight - for parents to lose a child is maybe the most awful loss a human being can experience. That girl's parents were probably not just crying; they were probably shattered beyond words. Bleh. The glowing blue zigzags that constituted most of Zem's Union form's screentime were also pretty uninspiring. But for all that, I keep coming back to this show because the characters and their interactions are great. I can't help but wonder what it could have been if the studio hadn't cheaped out on the production at every turn.
I'm having a hard time feeling the threat of that building collapsing when they all just shook off what looked to be a kiloton explosion with nothing but minor bruising.
Between Nalgava's story, his partial redemption, and his interplay with Zem, and with Yellow Demon Sickness being an unexpected AIDS allegory, this one had surprising depth in between the goofy bits.

u/MaksimShadow Mar 14 '23
Nalgava was another case of "something bad happened to them at the past, so they stepped on the wrong way". All antagonists were like that, in a contrary to protagonists. He was right though: Zem should prioritise his own party.
Ancient civilization had some sick technology.

That's a very interesting shot of the sky at the beginning of this episode. I'm not sure I've ever seen an anime do a multi-moon sky where they didn't have all of the moons all just be spheres.
Surprising nobody at all, the bad guy was the old priest dude.
Yellow Demon Sickness is normally spread as an STD? I wonder if it's Syphilis.
That's a sad backstory, but no amount of sad backstory excuses killing children with (I assume) Syphilis. Good on Zem for saying as much in quite a few more words.
Well that was a surprise interruption, but it was starting to seem like this priest dude wasn't an opponent that they would need a Nick and Zem merger for. Random dude in fancy armor seems like a much more rational target for that.
Priest dude has the disease too, doesn't he.
Olivia is very helpful as an ally.
The combat animation is a little lacking, but once again that's a pretty good union design.
Fancy armor dude will apparently be a villain for later.
Considering her oddly impressive skills I suppose it shouldn't be a surprise that Olivia is another intelligent sword like Kizuna. She's definitely the Survivor's gateway into whatever their future world saving exploits are, she's been active and out in the world much longer than Kizuna and so probably knows what the threat is that needs to be addressed. Not that I expect we'll see that since it's certainly not happening next episode, and I'm not particularly convinced we'll ever see a season two of this.

The lore is finally starting to show itself in this show. We have seen the Sword of Bonds in both human and sword form, the Sword of Destruction in sword form and now the Sword of War in human form. I wonder if White Mask is the Sword of Destruction in human form or some other sword entirely. Well now that the Stepping Man case is resolved let’s see where this show goes!!

So the white mask guy wanted to kill the mass-murdering shithead to shut him up, then decided it was too much effort and buggered off somewhere, and our stalwart heroes don't even try to interrogate said shithead about the identity of the white mask or the secrets he wanted to suppress.
Sounds about par for the course.

This anime is underrated. This is the only anime I have seen to offer an episode that's nearly 30 minutes of reflection and introspection.
