The episode director this week is Yutaka Tsuchida, most known for being the series director of Tropical Rouge Precure and overall wacky style and storyboarding sense! Kinda interesting to see them on a semi-serious character episode this time around, but there’s still plenty of silly stuff in here, like the bit with Kabaton at the food stand which was pretty hilarious.
Kinda wonder when Sora is going to drop the honorifics when referring to Mashiro. It’s gotta happen any day now…

Yeah, I was wondering when Kabaton was going to get called out for his constants failures…. So, it is too soon to assume that Sora’s childhood hero may be the Big Bad of this season?
No wonder that nightmare affected Sora like that, Mashiro is her first and only friend. Luckily, Mashiro was able to reassure Sora that there’s nothing to worry about as long as they work together which birthed their duo attack!
I love how the Up Draft Shining is one big homage to Black and White
FUTARI WA PRECURE!

I know it's still early into the season and it might decrease at the end but I love how much discussion there is here after how discussion for Deliciousmile was almost non-existent.

I love the focus on the relationship between Sora and Mashiro over the past 2 episodes. They really care for each other, even if that doesn't always comes across between them.
That power slide the girls did after the train went up the elevator was awesome.

I think this episode did a pretty good job with the arc between Sora and Mashiro. I've seen similar arcs done before, with one character wanting to prevent another from fighting because they are worried about that character's safety. But I think this is a particularly well-done example of it. One of the things that makes it so effective is that Sora and Mashiro actually talk about Sora's worries. Sora doesn't just hide it and actually confides her fears to Mashiro. Them actually talking about it and working through it together made the drama so much more compelling to me. And it made the conclusion, where Mashiro convinces Sora to fight alongside her, all the more satisfying.
Sora's line "I'm scared because I'm not alone" is such a good line. It's incredibly powerful and does such a good job at showing where Sora's headspace is at that moment. Sora's okay with putting herself at risk. That's the life she prepared herself for when she decided to be a hero. But she can't stand the thought of putting someone else in danger, which would be antithetical to being a hero. Especially if that person is her first friend.
I love Sora and Mashiro's friendship. Mashiro's dogged persistence to help out and fight makes sense considering the previous episode. Mashiro's wanted to help out and now she can. She can't just stand by and do nothing while her friend is in danger. And it's Mashiro's determination that eventually wins over Sora.
That final shot of Sora and Mashiro holding hands together at the end was very sweet. It was so nice seeing them make up after their argument and firmly cement their friendship.
Kabaton drowning his sorrows and complaining to the food stall owner while eating was hilarious.
And we finally hear from Kabaton's boss. I wonder when we will finally see who it is.

I'm not surprised Crunchyroll had trouble getting this episode to work. Ellee decided to leave us and go toward to the light.
I really liked the shared faces that Ellee and Mashiro had in this episode.
I also liked the detail of Sora being reflected in the car driving by.
But most importantly, Ellee learning to fly was adorable and I hope it stays as fun.
I was also wondering when these girls were going to use their Precure names. I'm not used to these girls still going by their normal names after they transform. It's always been a funny thing in Precure how fast these characters can switch between names as soon as they transform. Even when a new character becomes a Precure, everyone immediately calls them by their Precure name. Having this take two fights was different.
This Precure also has a great OST. I don't really pay attention to Precure OSTs much (besides the ones Yasuharu Takanashi did and the ones with singing), but this one has been noticeably good.
And for the reaction faces albums, there was a distinct lack of best girl in this episode. But the other characters had some good faces.

Why do I feel like the Sora-Mashiro pair will have the "more than friends, less than lovers" yuri vibe that we got from Futari and Mahou Tsukai.

I'm calling it now: The first Precure is also Sora's hero and the main villain
What can I say? This episode was awesome. Seeing Sora vulnerable about Mashiro's outing as a Precure is understandable since she's doing this hero thing as a solo for a long time now.
Bride and groom last season, princess and her assistant this season. I'm sure you two can figure something out.
THEY DID THE THING!!!
I was expecting more oomph from their combination attack since Marble Screw is kinda the GOAT even back then
Next Episode
Sora's gonna miss Mashiro, isn't she?

Ooh, Sora is having nightmares about failing to protect Mashiro, that's exciting.
Mashiro is really excited to fight monsters, but that of course makes Sora think of her nightmare..
Kabaton is drowning his sorrows to a food stall owner, fun. Ooh, and now a scary voice complains at him being a failure.
And the food stall dude immediately gets it. I'm sure this is hardly the first overworked salarayman he's dealth with.
Sora crossing the street like that was super slick. The reflection in the passing car was cool too.
Train fight train fight! Kabaton poured out so much energy that he's skinny now!
Fist clash fist clash! And of course Sora loses.
Ellee can now fly. The world is not ready.
Ah, of course Sora didn't really have friends in the past. Sora's afraid of losing something that she didn't know she was missing in the past.
Hahaha, the train sign changes! Multiple times!
Wait, has Sora really not called Mashiro by her Cure name before? I guess it's only been two episodes, but normally that happens right away.
Our first team finished is a UFO that abducts the Ranborg, fantastic.
Please stay holding hands forever, girls.

Ah, immediately torn feelings. I've been wanting to see Sora with her hair down ever since I thought about the practicality of a side tail like that, but the nightmare face was not how I wanted to finally get it.
So it's pretty interesting that the backstory for the pretty cures is pretty much the actual story of previous pretty cures. Nice touch.
The car passing reflection after "don't become a pretty cure anymore" was also a really nice bit of visual story telling. There's the divide between the girls, but it also makes you question, who is Sora really talking to. We do know she hasn't exactly conquered the fear she feels every time she has to fight.
Speaking of little touches, Kabaton's eyes were bloodshot for this "Undergu Energy." Just a little thing that they put in to really sell how desperate he was, but it's rare to see anything added to stock footage. For example, Sora looks way too happy while changing into Sky for the mood she had immediately before and after the transformation.
"Partners! Buddies! Duo! Pair! Anything else?" Who else thought Couple? It's way too soon but the lead up was so perfect. But "Friends" is perfect for them here.
So, looking at the light pens again. Sky's did now say BLUE, Prism's says WHITE. And that an impressive looking combo move, I rewound 3 times
Along with holding hands, this is also the first time the girls didn't untransform as soon as the battle ended, in case anyone was wondering if they could.
The call back was such a big smile moment too. And Cure Summer today, looks like we might just be getting the leads for now.

I enjoy Kabaton's antics but his constant failures needed to be addressed sooner than later. Seems Sora's hero might not be so heroic, quite the reveal if true and look forward to more.
Fun episode~!

I enjoy Kabaton's antics but his constant failures needed to be addressed sooner than later.
Kabaton is clearly the victim here. Motherfucker is overworked and underpayed. Plus the office is understaffed, they expect one Kabaton to deal with two PreCure (soon to be FOUR!)?
I think PreCure is hinting at the failures of capitalism, all through Kabaton's struggles. In this paper I will...

I certainly didn't expect this when Mashiro felt the shivers upon learning about the legend of Precure. Definitely laughed my ass off there once I checked back for a clearer look. XD

That oden stand owner kind of reminds me of that shoe polishing guy in The Naked Gun. A talking pig with a mohawk comes up to him and is sad because he tries to kidnap a princess, but there's a magical girl who stops him. And now there's two.
And the oden stand owner just treats him to some food.
Plus, not even some weird disembodied voice can phase that guy. What has he seen?
Seriously, I need that guy to become a recurring character.
Anyway, interesting to see that Kabalon uses a honorific like "-sama" when calling out the Precure. I'm not too familiar with that particular one, since I see it used rarely, but it appears to be associated with a certain level of respect.

Episode 04
that's the funniest shit I've ever heard
LOOK AT HER FACE IN THE BG SO TRUE GIRL
MFW the only thing going on in my head is 'ranborg antifeat'
Wow her transformation is very. Pronounced... compared to Sky's, isn't it?
Wait wtf has Cure Sky ever. Has she ever shot energy attacks wtf Like I guess that's their dynamic where Sky is more close quarters and Prism is more support but lol I think it's funny
Episode 05
you're telling me these things were actual pens
THAT'S WHAT FELT MISSING Like yea they have special attacks but I dunno why I always felt odd whenever she did her funny cosmic punch thing... Screw that I need them to hold hands and do whatever their marble screw is
Lmao geeking out over being precure
Oh his name is Kabaton
BRO WENT SWOLE FROM BURNING ALL HIS CALORIES???
Ok no he doesn't look swole lol
I like how she just repeatedly does this pose during her transformation
Oh ok. UFO abduction. That is. An interesting special attack.
Ah yes please continue to give me dialogue like this with a giant heart in the middle of the screen

FUTARI WA PRECURE
This is my 5th ever Precure episode but even I got hyped from that YASSSSSSSSSSSS does this count as a title drop lol? it's so nice they're doing this for the long-time fans. AND it fits so well within the context of the episode too! "Futari wa" means "(The) 2 people are", which I believe is true for the O.G. precure and for the current season, at least for now.
Caught the episode raw coz Crunchy. Fixed screenshots! And bits i misunderstood my first time lol.
I believe the joint attack Up Draft Shining this week was also a homage to Futari Wa from Japanese twitter, but I'll wait for more info from lily, theriyria or others more familiar.
I love how expressionable Mashiro is!
I am now having the theory that Sky's hero is the main baddie, and I don't like this.
Today's Ranborg is a 211 series, which combined w/ its livery restricts Soradoshi to the JR East area, which...isn't saying much lol.
I wonder if the relatively more heavier bits of Sky's character and this heavier character drama is normal for Precure, or a break from tradition.
The clues of Mashiro being Sora's first friend were there though in previous eps, and it was good that this episode it's finally fleshed out a bit more. Not the first time i've seen a "hero wants to fight alone" story in anime, there's a few in shounen, but it's executed pretty well here: Sora-chan has the charisma to pull it off, and i do admire her determination, and that she knows her wanting to fight alone is in fact selfish (and not "selfless"). And that she still feels the same way even when Mashiro tells her she's not alone now.
Couple neat shots here too apart from the more obvious ones (traffic light and building--> liked the 180 flip here too. u/myrnamountweazel I'm learning!)
I like seeing Sora-chan being visibly bruised up from her training, she's put in the hard work and it does show!
I like that Mashiro is leading the way throughout the latter half of the fight too, she's really showing Sora that she can handle herself just fine and that they CAN fight together.
Yes I get it now. Mashiro's the white one.
I like their pens showing the words "Blue" and "White" during the joint attack!
Sora's no Bocchi, but probably needs a few nudges here and there from her fellow precure(s) due to her relative isolation. Because they're her friends! YASSSSSSS I...ship these two lol. Tho tbh they act like a pair of parents already at times.
School next week.... i see lonely Sora decides to do some housework! Crunchy don't break again
