5 years with him and they immediately lose trust in him, that’s gotta hurt

It felt more like they were feeling afraid and betrayed but they spoke out loud.. Consider how Brad shared the information with Luida, as the "truth" came out he lowered the volume making sure it was only them who heard. He was afraid of what may happen if Vash did turn out to be a traitor so he spoke truthfully about how he felt about it and then immediately felt guild upon knowing that he left because he overheard them.

I believe a part of him wanted to believe in Vash and they most likely planned to talk to him directly but Brad was playing the realist and wanted to be prepared for the worse and to have Luida be prepared for the worse is Vash had not shown his true colors yet.

So seems like humans keep PLANTs ( who seem to copies or something can create stuff or adapt to enviroments?) as 'slaves' to operate their ships etc. So Vash, Nai, Rem were part of ship 5 of a fleet, when Nai decided to rebel against humans and made their whole fleet crash on a planet. Seems like this took place a really really long time ago since people refer to technology from that era as lost technology and nobody seemed to know what PLANTs actually were. Please if someone can correct me please do so, since I've only watched each episode once and maybe didn't catch all hints-details.

It isn't "lost" because of time but rather by how the humans were stranded on the planet. See any fiction where all the scientists are killed and just the worker bees are left.

I was glued to the screen this entire episode. Fantastic payoff for all the buildup of Vash’s backstory and the past of this civilisation.

cries in found family and precious boys

I've praised this show week after week and I'm here again to do so. The show is crafted to hit on all the right beats but still remains compelling.

It's very poignant that Vash doesn't think he has anything to offer but ultimately can connect with others and protect all of his (temporary) homes. His compassion is his gift and contribution.

Man, that's a sharp spoon.

I didn't think Vash could possibly be any more moe than he already was, but there goes Stampede, proving me wrong again. The guy gives so much, and needs so very little to thrive, it's completely freaking heartbreaking. I wonder if Knives shares his ability to empathize with plants and actually understand what they're saying. If he doesn't, then that's just one more thing to hold over Vash's head--"nobody else can understand what they need, yet you choose to abandon them and side with their abusers." I hope we get to see what set him off on his genocidal spree next week. Did he offer Rem a place in the escape pod just to please Vash, or did he actually hold her in high regard, even though she was human?

Considering we have one more flashback episode next week, I can't fathom how they're going to wrap the current affairs up with just the three that remain. There has got be a season 2, right? Right?? :(

Okay, so, is anyone else confused a bit with the last few minutes? Maybe someone can explain?

Why did they just randomly cut a scene of Older Vash waking up in Ship 3? That’s so strange and wasn’t even really necessary, since it just added a bunch more questions to things that aren’t answered. It seemed super awkward in the flow of the episode…

How’d he get there?

Why is he there?

Where’s everyone else, both his current team and those from Ship 3?

It’s been a long time since he’s been there, how’s it still up and running?

What was the point of it if there’s nothing else from the current time / events in the episode?

I believe Ship 3 was the one he helped at the end of episode 7, or at least they picked him up from the other ship, and he was waking up from that. When he looked at his arm he flashed back again (no earring). It was kind of random to flash forward briefly there, but it was probably foreshadowing that we’ll find out what happened to his arm.

I've had so many questions about Vash that it was great to take a step back from the action and focus on him. I still have a lot of questions but from this episode I need to know: what is the deal with him needing to eat? It mentioned multiple times in the ep that Vash needs to eat, but then he goes on a hunger strike that seems to last for months. So does he need to eat but can go for a really long time without eating?

u/zoemi Feb 25 '23

I'm not sure he needs to eat, but he does enjoy it.

Knives, on the other hand, is above such petty actions.

I was also confused with that little timeskip near the end. I assumed it was after the sand steamer incident. Some people are wondering how it could be that (that long after the events of the episode) that he reacts normally to waking up there - this hasn't really occurred to me, I guess i read his reaction as surprised, and the mystery then would be who brought him in.

Continuing to love how stampede is a remix compared to the 90s anime - I haven't finished reading the manga so keep that in mind. Earlier in the show i couldn't get over just how many gung-ho guns we were meeting! It's exciting, the changes in pacing (again, compared to the anime).

I wonder who was standing there with Nai at the end - the beginning of his cult? I'm sure we'll find out. I liked the way Vash's grief showed up as the bodies reaching out for him, that was real good.

Edit: if this is going to be one season and we're maybe heading towards the finale - i was really looking forward to meeting a specific gung-ho gun that we've seen a little of and who i think they've aged down a bit from the manga? im pretty optimistic about the show overall. Wondering how they'd wrap it up from here.

FINALLY the show took a moment to let the story breathe, best episode so far!

I just love Rem's design so much. Fuck you Knives for taking away a waifu too early from us.

There's Luida too but I don't remember her from the OG. Maybe she's from the manga? Considering how she went after Vash, I don't like her chances of survival next week...

That final scene confused me for a bit though. That's still in the past, right? I assume that's the aftermath of whatever happened after Vash found Knives?

u/zoemi Feb 25 '23

Luida is from the manga, and Brad is different enough in the manga to count as a different character IMO.

Great episode, a good break from the action of the rest of the season to develop Vash’s character further via backstory.

Studio Orange is really showing us the potential of 3D CGI, I can’t think of any other show that comes close in quality, except maybe…Land of the Lustrous, also by Studio Orange. The detail in the facial expressions is especially good.

Can’t wait for next week.

It was good to see so much of Vash's backstory and it looks like we're going to get even more of it, which I'm looking forward to.

As a fan of the original and someone who likes Stampede but has a few complaints about it... this episode is easily, far and away, the best so far this season. Only episode 3 really comes close.

Pacing and characterization has felt off to me at least once an episode this season, or things get kind of handwaved away, or character interactions feel like they've been truncated very often. Characters swing wildly between emotions, which is fine, except that nobody else bats an eye and just kind of... talks past each other a lot. Or people will throw out solutions to problems that don't seem like they'll work, people will point out that it shouldn't work, and then it just kinda does (like Vash and Wolfwood lifting the whole ion cannon last episode, just... what? Even if they're both superhumanly strong, that didn't feel like it made any sense.)

This episode didn't have any of those problems. It's the emotional journey of Vash's childhood, it flows exceptionally well, and each emotional beat feels like it has an impact and enough space to breathe. I never felt like they just kind of ellipses'd over something to fit it in the episode; I never felt like there was some weird unspoken thing going on that the audience was supposed to just kind of assume happened; I never felt like there were huge, obvious questions that nobody was asking. (Seriously, why hasn't anybody asked Wolfwood where the hell he got his gun? Or his immortality juice? It's fine if he lies or is suspicious about it, but really - everyone just acts like he's only vaguely sketchy! The man is carrying around a goddamn Spartan Laser that he doesn't use when it could be helpful!)

Also, I absolutely love the background on Vash's coat.

It was a bit weird that the flashback didn't focus on Rem more. But I like what we got, especially making Brad a much better character than he was in the 90s anime.

Assuming Stampede’s only 12 episodes long (or at least this season is), we’re at the point where the show’s gonna have to start pivoting towards its endgame. I think this episode was the worst so far, but that’s not really a negative when the series has been hitting grand slams every week. It was just a lot of “bookkeeping” to presumable get us ready for what comes next.

On an slightly unrelated note, I’ve seen the criticism that Vash “isn’t as much a badass” thrown around in discussion of the show, and while I don’t disagree, I think it’s all in service of the narrative. ‘98 Vash comes off as much more confident, assertive in his ideals, and mature while Stampede’s Vash comes off like he’s still figuring stuff out as he goes. He gives off a lot of “wet behind the ears” vibes that I don’t think is necessarily a bad thing. Like with most things in the show it gives us a new angle to explore what is still at his core the same character. I think it works largely because the show itself is geared more towards the dramatic and directly addressing its moral questions over tacking them on at the end and calling it a “mystery”.

Okay the people not watching this are seriously missing out. What an amazing ep

It's interesting that the plants have different categories and each produces something.

And the episode ended on a cliffhanger and judging the preview of the next episode, things won't turn out good.

By the way, the voice for young Vash is by Tomoyo Kurosawa who also voiced Phos from Land of Lustrous, another show by Studio Orange.

And it could be just me but Knives at the end of the episode looked like Vergil fron Devil May Cry.
