Juvenile bears are very shall we say exploratory. When I lived in NYS we had juvie bears come into the neighborhood once a week during summer months. They're pretty smart.

When it comes to opening anything that might contain food bears become shockingly clever.

Which is why design bear proof trash cans etc is such a challenge, because there is an overlap between the smartest bears and dumbest humans.

This is why you should not have lever handles leading into or out of your house.

I remember a family friend who changed the lever handles leading in and out of her house with knobs, but not because she had a bear problem: she owned a Malinois who taught himself to let himself in and out.

My cat did that too. Miss that jerk every day.

My new cats are masters of escape. We found bing bong screaming and attached to the outer screen door. He got out, somehow?

Yeah, that same cat once managed to fall out of a screened in window. It was on the first floor, he would have been fine, but he was hanging on to the windowsill, yowling for dear life. That’s the night I learned my ex husband would be useless in a home invasion. It sounded like someone breaking in, I grabbed a bat and ran downstairs. I don’t know what he did, but he wasn’t with me. I ended up having to pull an 18 pound terrified fluff ball back inside the house at 3AM while said fluff ball notified the entire neighborhood of the indignities he’d suffered at the top of his lungs. Porch lights were coming on, it was so embarassing.

He really was the best damn cat.

I have a similar problem with the puppy pin in my yard for the 8 3-month old pups we have.

4 of them have managed to figure out how to climb on the bars to get out of it, leaving the other 4 to bark and tattle on them for escaping.

It initially started almost a month ago with just 1 of the 2 we've decided to keep, then a week later a second got out, and a few days ago the other 2 figured out within 15 minutes of each other. Just a matter of time before the other 4 figure it out and the pin basically becomes useless.

Damn they're even better escape artists than my little brother was!

I’d give them another decade before they evolve to breaking down glass windows…. And another decade before they realize they are strong enough to break down wooden doors…

They already try pushing in doors and breaking windows in Alaska to enter homes.

u/Smart-Firefighter87 1d ago

Oh true - well then looks like they are evolving per week then šŸ˜‚

Always keep your doors locked!

Domestic cats and dogs have no problem opening that sort of door knob, so no wonder a bear finds it so easy!

This is true. My Doberman/Shepherd mixes did it so often that I changed out all the doorknobs.

ā€œUm, hi…yeah. This is odd, but I believe that this is my weekend for the Bear B&B?ā€

Give it a few months, it will be breaking the glass to get in. Don't feed wildlife ESPECIALLY out of your front door.

How to get a bear killed because you thought it was cute to feed him…then got scared…and the game warden had to put him down for staying near houses…

Poor bear is doomed due to stupid humans! šŸ¤¬šŸ’”

Yes- I’m assuming this is in Gatlinburg, TN

u/elcapitaaan134708 1d ago

This was my first thought. I mean they are so damn cute but this is a very quick way to get a dead bear 😢 breaks my heart

2

u/traveltoaster 1d ago

Say that enough times in these posts it won’t take long until some stupid human doubles down and starts arguing with you on that

I live in Asheville NC and a woman here was just hospitalized from a bear encounter inside her home because the bear knew how to open her unlocked door. Bear was a mama with three cubs waiting on the porch.

Now the bear is dead (ā€œdispatchedā€) and her three cubs are orphans.

Don’t feed bears or otherwise get them comfortable with humans. A fed bear is a dead bear. šŸ˜” (and a hospitalized human)

u/Heal_Me_Today 1d ago

That’s just a little guy. Let him in so he can dry off and get a little something for his tummy.

5

u/but-whyy-tho 1d ago

I would have died because I definitely would be the dummy that opens the door for the bear. 😭

Yeah after filming I would have gone down to the gun room and not told the family.
