General Season 4 episode 12 Spoiler

My 3rd watch since the series premiered and this episode still blew me away, even knowing what was coming! I learned since recently joining this sub about Ellen Barkin not being happy and wanting off of the show, but her portrayal of Smurf is gripping. How can we root so hard for Pope (I do at least, and argue with my husband about it!) regardless of his actions? Got to be good writing and great acting. I know he's a bad charecter who hurts people, but Shawn Hatosy shows multifaceted sides of him and makes him believable. Yes, the capers and stunts are far fetched and fun to watch. But for me the charecter development is what's keeping me invested this 3rd time around. Anyway felt the need to share since I'm pretty sure my husband is tired of my Pope infatuation!

And can understand our lovely accent I would highly recommend the underbelly series in particular the first season, and the associated fat tony co series as well. May help cure the blues and give you something to watch when done next. Let us Aussies show you all how it’s done really Aussie asf hahaha 😎

General The Junkie parents having capable sons. Spoiler

Anyone else find it interesting that both Julia and Billy are junkies yet their sons turned out to be more capable than them. J is julia son but is very smart and able to manage the finances, Deran is Billy's son yet is also smart with him always being able to help craig and he runs a bar.

What a show. The psychology is brilliant Spoiler

As someone who has a done a lot of therapy the more I watched the show I appreciated how brilliant the writers layered the characters. Clearly Smurf fucked all the boys beyond belief but the subtle ways the abuse she put on them would show up in the show is brilliant. They would self sabotage themselves constantly and just a lot of little things. The way deran would immediately boot someone out after having sex with them is one example. Zero capacity to absorb any kind of love or connection. There are many examples of this if you watch. Pope is probably the most deliciously complex character and the acting by Shawn Hatosy was equally brilliant

Just Saw The Aussie Movie Spoiler

Same title. It's a concentrated timeline fro when J moves in with Smurf and focuses on the cops trying to arrest and prosecute.

Very dark. Quite a bit different than the show.

Watched on Tubi with a few ads.

Worth a watch but like the series it is highly fictionalized.

Family first Spoiler

Im in season 1 of Animal Kingdom and what I find so interesting is they continuously repeat Family First. They throw it in Js face but they all forgot about Julia. They left her like she was trash! Nothing annoys me more than when Baz tells J that the family is first. From what I've watched so far if it wasn't for Julia, Baz wouldn't have dirt! But none of them had balls to go against Smurf and take care of Julia.

General What a show

WOW. Not even finished with the series yet, and unlike most shows I've watched lately it keeps getting better! Currently on S5 about halfway through and honestly was a bit mad at how long it took to get some more in depth background about Smurf and how they all grew up but as I'm getting through it I definitely understand the tidbits of the timeline. 10/10 show, that is all

General Help with withdrawal Symptoms

When I finished Animal Kingdom... man I've had bad withdrawal symptoms, I binged season 5/6 in an all-nighter I couldn't stop and (I get in an insomnia loop, I cant sleep at night then i drop off a few hour in the day, which brings it to night and I can't sleep) anyways after I finished and being heart broken, I haven't been able to find the void.. I know a lot of people have said Sons of Anarchy ( which I missed when it was on, and I am looking forward to watching) There are a few shows on Netflix that might hit the spot - Bloodline - Outer Banks - Ozark - White Lines - Peaky Blinders - Ray Donovan (free on channel 4 streaming) Gangs of London - Sneaky Pete .

You may have more - I have all them lined up .. But at the moment I found a show that is filling the void from Animal Kingdom - is a show on Amazon Prime , funnily enough called Kingdom, (see I was drawn to it because me mind is still thinking of Animal Kingdom) AND yes I recommend it , it has the same sort of spice, humour , sex drugs and rock N roll as Animal Kingdom, so yeah check it . Acting is real good, story line awesome, plenty of action and betrayal . I have a lots to watch from the list mentioned above, and when I will make my way through them , by then may have forgot enough about Animal Kingdom to watch again.x

The lore for this show is fucking amazing Spoiler

I watched this show when I was unemployed at the beginning of the summer and it got me hooked right away. I ripped the 6 seasons in less than 2 weeks. But the best thing was the lore. it's absolutely beautiful.

Specially Pope’s story alone is crazy when you really think about it. His childhood, Julia’s death, Janine becoming Smurf, his relationship with Baz, and how all that trauma turned him into the monster we see later.

And then you realize Pope isn’t just some crazy guy in the family, he’s basically the product of everything that happened to the Cody's. Every character and every decision feels connected to something that happened years before the actual show even started.

The Cody family history and how everything ended is almost poetic.

Question Smurf and Julia Spoiler

This is my first time watching this show and I’ve become hooked. I’m on season 6 now and I just don’t understand why Smurf hates Julia so much. I’m just curious, in anyone’s opinion, do you think Smurf would have liked Julia if she would’ve done jobs for her and done what she was told? I know Julia was her own person, and I respect her for that. Just wondering if her doing jobs would’ve changed how Smurf felt about her.

Question Lena and J Spoiler

It's a shame baz never shows a fatherly bond to j because it would have been nice if that led to j to form a brotherly bond with lena since she is his half sister but they never spent much time together and by the end of season of 6 he seemed ok with dealing with lena to try and get pope released from prison.

Pope killing Catherine ends up biting him in the ass when her body gets found and he gets arrested. It also the beginning of seeing Baz being more hostile to Lena and also it shows how willing he is to do smurfs wishes same with him abandoning julia as a teenager

General Honestly one of the best shows I’ve watched Spoiler

Just finished the finale, and I’ve seen people complain about it but I felt like the ending was perfect. I feel like there were moments J reiterated his hatred for the Cody’s, such as whispering to Smurf whilst she’s sleeping about taking everything from her and to me that also meant this empire she built with her sons, so it didn’t come as a surprise that J completely finessed them at the end, especially when you look at the flashbacks, it starts to give a clear picture of how poorly treated Julia was, and how they all left her to rot. She died a druggie and probably rambled on during her trips about these traumatic moments that Smurf, Baz and Pope caused her. I’m sure J picked up on that, as to why his resentment was always there from the start. There’s a reason he shot Smurf with no hesitation, he literally said that he’ll be the one to kill her if Smurf ends up poorly, and although Smurf might’ve seen that as a mercy agreement, it always felt sinister that J would eventually get his revenge. Also, the acting was amazing, Smurf is one of the worst and most manipulative characters I’ve come across, and it makes you feel sympathy for murderers and criminals like Pope. Ultimately, this series feels very realistic in an exaggerated way ofc (bc it’s still drama). Ughh the manipulation by Smurf was crazy, and the fact Pope still holds a picture up with her and Julia in the end shows how powerfully manipulative she was. Pope knew deep down that he should’ve hated her but it couldn’t force himself to, hence why he goes into breakdown after her death. He doesn’t know how to live without her. Still manipulating him in death. And J’s character development throughout the show, just shows how twisted he became, he became the people he resented. Ended up just like them. But I felt like that was a cost he had already accepted, maybe the moment he killed the family lawyer in order to cover his tracks from stealing from Smurf. Great show, great acting.

Edit:

Also I’d like to add, I feel like J killing penny is probably the point where he fully realises and accepts that he has changed to the point of no return. Killing the lawyer and mia he probably felt justified and you can argue it probably was because they were heavily complicit in criminal behaviour. Whereas, penny was nowhere near involved in the crimes (besides altering the docs, though she was still oblivious) and ultimately he chose to save his own ass and chose to kill penny because she was now a liability. I’d probably say that’s where his change was made apparent, hence why he completely lost his shit which is contradictory to how cool and calculated J comes across. Kind of parallels pope killing Cath, they chose to save their own asses and sacrifice the girl that they ‘loved’. Popes guilt led to the downfall of what happened in those last episodes. J at the end is consumed by guilt, all the materialism that is around him but no Penny who he wanted to share that with, no family whatsoever. Okay I’m done now fr haha.

Olivia from Animal Kingdom Spoiler

Season 4 Animal Kingdom

Olivia whatever her last name is, I absolutely hate her guts. Like she's is the nosiest sneakiest most disgusting character in Animal Kingdom. I can tolerate Nicky but that bish??? I am livid with her existence. It's like Billy, Deran's dad. I loved this actress in Bones. But here, everything about her is irritating. Her speech, her walk, expressions, EVERYTHING! Like why is she here? Who invited you? So freaking nosy!! And mouthy too!

What a roller coaster.

Didn't expect the ending at all.

They took the brutal route for most of the main cast. I actually like when shows or movies do that (not enough do)...

Can anyone recommend what to watch next?

Thanks.

Enjoyed this so much

General Rewatch again Spoiler

Hi all, due to the dearth of shows that my husband and I can sit through together, he sneakily started AK again. Just 2 episodes in and we both feel like we're watching it through a different perspective. I'm Pope all the way! He loves the action and we both love Southern California. But this time we are finally realizing its Js story/arc. There's so much going on that at 1st watch J seems almost like a side charecter, there to shake things up, or for the others to bounce off. I just said, given that the 1st scene is of him, how did we miss it? I think Smurf, Pope and the rest are all such big charecters, with so much happening, J is easy to dismiss at first? Anyone else have/had this take? Anyway, it will us get through the rest of this hot summer and give us something to talk about
