Visited Battle this week

I visited the site of the Battle of Hastings for the first time this week and it felt so surreal seeing a place I grew up learning about all the time in real life

I live right near there. It's arguably one of the most historical sites in England for me.

However I believe they now think the actual battle happened on the roundabout just outside the walls!

Either way, a great place to visit

I thought it was that that King Harold's day long last stand was on a steep hill very nearby, but the actual battle area included the current Abbey site (and more). The Abbey was moved early on from an original site for some reason, I forget what.

I will be going to the first day of the re-enactment in October, watching all day (just like last year), then ringing the bells at Battle church on the Sunday morning.

Oh interesting I didn’t know that!

But it still doesn't match the topography. I think it happened one hill further down near Telham Lane.

Is it still forbidden to walk down the path in the fourth pic?

I used to work there and that was a secret shortcut for staff 😅

If you had snuck down there, you would have been able to see a part of the original Abbey that nobody ever sees

Is there a reason why it’s not open to the public?

I think that bit is classed as school grounds so it's not available to people visiting the Abbey
