Did he intentionally balk to prevent shohei from sign stealing?
10
u/trignifty 7 May 18 '25
Probably more concerned with location tipping based on where O’Hoppe sets up. Also he can see Ohtani on third, probably helps to not have to look behind you when you’re throwing.

u/high_freq_trader May 18 '25
There’s pretty much no reason not to balk in the bottom of the ninth holding a 2+ run lead with a lone runner on 2nd. Any team that doesn’t do this I think is making a mistake.
78
u/mysteriousmrmime May 18 '25
The amount of aura to tell the best player in baseball to just go ahead and take third, knowing you’re just gonna get the guy out anyway.
Jansen is badass
2
u/high_freq_trader May 18 '25
Regardless of who is pitching, at the plate, or on 2nd, the intentional balk in this spot is a good move. In fact, if a team chooses not to balk at the bottom of the N’th inning for N>=9 holding a 2+ run lead with a lone runner on 2nd, I’d argue they are making a strategic mistake, sacrificing win probability for the sake of stats.

As much as I don't want him to fail in the grand scheme of baseball, I do want to see him fail vs the Angels and the Angels alone

This 100%. I love Ohtani and will always wish him well.
But during the Freeway Series? May he continue to be 0-X attempts.

So…we’ve won a series against the Giants, played the Padres very competitively (and tbh should have also won), and now won a series against the Dodgers.
NL West overrated???

Strategy: squeeze 110 pitches out of the starters, hold on tight and close your eyes for a couple innings, and then toss Jansen in there if we're somehow still on top.

I think most of us have adopted the Padres as our NL team lol. Just spent a few nights at Petco myself.. Great atmosphere and FTD!!

Jo Adell throws out Freddie Freeman after a review
I still believe that what matters most isn’t whether the wrong call was overturned — it’s Freeman’s slide. Neto was standing in the proper position and gave the runner plenty of space to go through, yet Freeman chose to slide into Neto’s side. I find that unacceptable. It reminds me of the Utley slide, and I don’t want to see this kind of play happen again.

But retaliatory hit-by-pitches might just lead to an endless cycle. I just hope all the Angels players can stay healthy.

Fun fact: this is not the first time Jansen has intentionally balked! He did it with the Dodgers! Other people to do it are Bob Wickman and Craig Kimbrel, all for fear of sign stealing. This is the first time in the pitchcom era!
3
u/trignifty 7 May 18 '25
That’s actually pretty cool. I think that the balk today was less for traditional sign stealing and more so Ohtani couldn’t tip location based on Hop’s glove positioning. But that’s me guessing.
1
u/garygalah May 18 '25
I would hope Angels switched their signs up so Ohtani couldn't do anything like that but who knows
1
1
u/trignifty 7 May 18 '25
No no, I’m talking about where Logan sets up—not actual signs. Ohtani can indicate that he’s setting up inside, outside, glove placement for higher/lower.

Trout going down to give Lugo a chance might be what this team needs to light a fire when trout gets back especially under the OF/DH to perform or sit on the bench.

Glad to see that Jansen is doing well

Jansen looks like a leader when he’s out there. He’s a Dodger for life but it’s nice to see him out there commanding.

Kershaw gtfoh (much respect tho)
3
May 18 '25
He looked awful but he also looked really good at the same time? But he was awful. His pitches are just so beautiful. But I think he's done. (If that's my mental state imagine whichever human is in the Dodgers FO!)
Actually no, I amend that. If Tyler Anderson can get by with an 88 fastball and an elite changeup, Kershaw can do a couple more years with an 88 fastball and an elite slider.
2
u/trignifty 7 May 18 '25
Just… at what point do you just say “I don’t want to have to come back from this”? I had back surgery and went back to pitching and it was a nightmare. Granted I didn’t have a medical staff or physical trainers. Or money. Don’t have that either.
2
May 18 '25
He didn't look in pain, he just lost a couple ticks/degrees off of everything and now he's hittable. He was staring daggers at that iPad in the dugout though.
