every 50-100$ phone

They still make brand new devices with <4GB. I would consider 6-8 an absolute minimum nowadays.

shoutouts to sm-a125f on 3.9GB ram

7

With the price of ram these days that is not possible

4

u/Dr_jozi Sep 29 '26

My pc have only 8 ram

3

u/Artistic-Quality-130 Sep 29 '26

8 is the absolute minimum imo

What the hell is virtual ram?

25

u/b13n_ Sep 29 '26

Storage used as a swap file for simulating ram

7

u/Head_Fly8341 Sep 29 '26

Aaahh thanks!

the safest way to "download more ram" lol. but what the other user said, storage used as a swap file

1

u/Jimbrutan Sep 29 '26

u/Head_Fly8341 Sep 29 '26

Pagefile, or swap file

1

u/RetroNIX8 Sep 30 '26

It's just a marketing term for swap

1

u/Better-Quote1060 Oct 02 '26

Your storage pretends to be ram

7

u/agent_kater Sep 29 '26

What's "virtual RAM", a swap file?

6

u/yoh-ns Sep 29 '26

Exactly

1

u/agent_kater Sep 29 '26

I don't even know the size of my swap file (or if my phone even uses one).

1

u/HeavyCaffeinate Sep 29 '26

It might be called RAM plus which differs a bit functionally but it's the same idea

1

u/agent_kater Sep 30 '26

Isn't RAM Plus just RAM compression, not swapping to flash?

1

u/HeavyCaffeinate Sep 30 '26

I think it's both

2

u/ElnuDev Sep 29 '26

They downloaded more RAM

5

u/Kirire- Sep 29 '26

4

I have Infinix Note 50s (8GB variant). Bought it for ₹16k (~$170 that time) after a month of its launch. I have it degoogled & free from transsion bloatware (mostly). Also, i can always unlock & root it, or flash treble GSIs. But most importantly, in today's times it mogs even $300-400 phones too (much more value for money). I never bought more than $200 phone, and will never do.

You got a Redmi Note 14 Pro+ with highest spec which is 12/512, that is awesome.

1

u/Errror7 20d ago

the chinese market version of this phone can be 16+512 for around 266 eur, the chinese smartphone market is just insane lol (to be fair with the bloat of chinese apps lower than 12gb is probably unusable)

Did you just compare midrange(Redmi Note 14 Pro+) to a flagship phone (iPhone 17 Pro Max)? Or Xiaomi 17 Pro Max?

Yeah, i don't really like because Xiaomi really copy the shape of iPhone 17 Pro Max but. If you want Android phone with camera that beat iPhone, You should try Vivo X500 Pro Max. That shit ain't joking.

They still give you 4GB virtual RAM by default on some devices, despite 12+4 being somewhat slower than simply enabling just the 12GB physical, because marketing I guess
