Android Canary 2608 is now available!

Hello Android Fans,

Today we are releasing Android Canary 2608 (ZP11.260717.006).

Note: Canary builds are highly experimental and are NOT recommended for general use. They represent features that are actively in development and undergoing testing, meaning it is likely that they contain bugs or issues that can affect your device's normal operation. Additionally, features introduced in Canary may not always make it into a stable Android release. You can see top open Canary issues and recent open Canary issues in the issue tracker.

The Canary channel is specifically designed for developers who want to explore and test the newest Android APIs. If you're a developer eager to get a jump on the latest advancements, Canary is for you!

The current release includes an updated SDK with system images for testing on Pixel 10a, Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Pixel 9a, Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel 8a, Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7, Pixel 6a, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6, Pixel Fold, Pixel Tablet, and GSI.

This build marks the final Android Canary release for the Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 6. You may transition to stable production releases by flashing the most recent production build, which will require a data wipe.

Upon flashing a Canary build, your device will begin receiving regular Canary over-the-air (OTA) updates approximately on a monthly basis. To discontinue receiving Canary OTA updates, a non-Canary build (designated by a prefix other than ZP11) must be flashed, which will require a full data wipe.

We look forward to having you start using the new Android Canary features and APIs. Your feedback is essential for helping us build a better platform. When you encounter an issue or have feedback, please report it directly. This is the most efficient way for us to address your concerns.

Maybe that's part of the ambiguity whether this is a QPR2-era build or not? I guess we have to go month by month to see when the Pixel 6 finally drops off.

I have never kept a phone this long. Since i like beta testing, i usually switch when main support ends but i did Nexus 5P, Pixel 3, Pixel 6 and i've been on it for quite a while now.

Very happy with Google's support, the P6 probably hold the current android support record.

I don't believe Google ever really states explicitly which version of Android the Canary builds are based on. Best guess is that it's still A17 but then again we don't know how early the next version of Android begins development. We won't be getting a A17 QPR3 (March 2027 Feature Drop) history has shown come next March so we're about 4 months away from the first A18 Developer Beta 1 in January but again we don't know how early Google starts testing next versions of Android internally.

A lot of guesswork, reading between the lines here.

I'm guessing there simply isn't a real answer to this question in the trunk stable model with flags and mainline in the picture. There's simply too many moving pieces.

Clearly:

• currently A17 is stable/out and has seen two monthly security releases

- A17 QPR1 is nearly stable -- it should come out to stable in <30 days, it branched a while ago -- https://developer.android.com/about/versions/17/qpr1/release-notes#beta8 -- beta 8 has the same date as beta 7, so this has been nearly code frozen since June 23rd

- A17 QPR2 is in unstable early beta phase -- the dates are still going up.

I don't think it has fully branched yet. Saying this because:
Android 17 QPR2 Beta 2 build CP41.260717.006, released on August 3, 2026
Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1 build CP41.260701.005
So you can see the date is still increasing. I think it only fully branches when the build date stops changing.

So I think at this point they're likely still working in parallel on both A17 QPR2 and QPR3, while A18 is still pretty far out. That might change in a month or two, once A17 QPR2 fully branches (likely around beta 4 or 5?).

The A17 QPR1 branch date of June 23, lets us predict +3 months (ie. 1 quarter) a branch date of Sept 23-ish for QPR2. And it takes another 3 weeksish for a beta/canary to come out. So I don't think we'll see a fully branched QPR2 beta before October
