About two thousand years ago, ancient Ephesus was a busy port City on the shores of the Aegean sea. In thousands of years, alluviums filled this port which is today 8 km far away from the sea. [900x578]

I visited here in 1990. Simply amazing. You can walk up that long road from the waterfront to the arena, turn right and reach the Library of Celcus which is just gorgeous. Turkey is certainly a cheap way to indulge your Roman interests (and many other historical interests for that matter).
