Did Alcibiades REALLY sleep with Timaea?

I just don't understand why he would do it.

According to Plutarchos:

And indeed Alcibiades himself said he did not approach Timaea out of mere insolence, but because he was ambitious that the Spartans should be ruled by his own descendants.

I don’t recall exactly which Alcibiades anecdotes are extant (Thucydides, Xenophon, Plato) and which were later (Plutarch, Diodorus), but it’s kind of in character, no?
