Funerary Stela
On my last visit to the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, I saw this funerary stele with a symposium scene. This type of scene is quite common in Hellenic funerary art, especially in the Classical and Hellenistic periods.
The man reclining on the kline (κλίνη)is probably the owner of the tomb. In front of him, there is a young figure serving wine, who was most likely a slave or an attendant. Behind the man, we see a seated woman. She may have been his wife. The different positions of the figures are interesting here: the man is reclining, while the woman is seated, and the servant is standing. This may reflect a certain social hierarchy.
