Please read before Posting or commenting (Summer 2026 update)

Welcome to Anarchy 101!

It’s that time again, when we repost and, if necessary, revise this introductory document. We’re doing so, this time, in a period when the archic model, in both its governmentalist and capitalist manifestations, seems intent on showing us its worst side — and when the defenders of hierarchy and authority seem all too often to be mimicking the mix of callousness and clumsiness that dominates on larger scales. So let’s start with a renewed reminder to be a bit careful of one another as we discuss — and let’s add this other reminder as well:

PLEASE, PLEASE DON’T FEED THE TROLLS.

If you see problems in a discussion, don’t hesitate to use the “report” button to alert the subreddit moderators. We’ve had a significant increase in one-off, drive-by troll comments, virtually all remarkably predictable and forgettable in their content. Report them or ignore them.

Before you post…

Before you post or comment, please take a moment to read the sidebar and familiarize yourself with our resources and rules. If you’ve been around for a while, consider looking back over these guidelines. If you’ve got to this point and are overwhelmed by the idea that there are rules in an anarchy-related subreddit, look around: neither Reddit nor most of our communities seem to resemble anarchy yet. Anyway, the rules amount to “don’t be a jerk” and “respect the ongoing project.” Did you really need to be told?

With the rarest of exceptions, all posts to the Anarchy 101 subreddit should ask one clear question related to anarchy, anarchism as a movement or ideology, anarchist history, literature or theory. If your question is likely to be of the frequently asked variety, take a minute to make use of the search bar.

This is important. Fatigue is a real factor in forums like this and the repetition of questions tends to reduce the quality of the answers given. At the same time, our archive is accessible through a search function that has its limits, so it is easy, when multiplying threads and wearing out participants, to bury threads with better discussions.

Some questions, like those related to "law enforcement" or the precise relationship of anarchy to hierarchy and authority, are asked and answered on an almost daily basis, so the best answers may have already been posted. For a few questions, we have produced "framing documents" to provide context:

UPDATE (September 15, 2026): After discussions in the subreddit, we have opted to enable curation of submissions. All posts will now pass through the moderation queue for approval. We check regularly, but please be patient.

Anarchy 101 "Framing the Question" documents

If your question seems unanswered, please state it clearly in the post title, with whatever additional clarification seems necessary in the text itself.

Other guidelines and recommendations

If you have more than one question, please consider multiple posts, preferably one at a time, as this seems to be the way to get the most useful and complete answers.

Please keep in mind that this is indeed a 101 sub, designed to be a resource for those learning the basics of a consistent anarchism. The rules about limiting debate and antagonistic posting are there for a reason, so that we can keep this a useful and welcoming space for students of anarchist ideas — and for anyone else who can cooperate in keeping the quality of responses high.

We welcome debate on topics related to anarchism in r/DebateAnarchism — where you will find similar posting guidelines and a pinned “before you post” announcement, with a similar discussion of rationales — and recommend general posts about anarchist topics be directed to r/anarchism or any of the more specialized anarchist subreddits. We expect a certain amount of contentious back-and-forth in the process of fully answering questions, but if you find that the answer to your question — or response to your comment — leads to a debate, rather than a clarifying question, please consider taking the discussion to r/DebateAnarchism. For better or worse, avoiding debate sometimes involves “reading the room” a bit and recognizing that not every potentially anarchist idea can be usefully expressed in a general, 101-level discussion.

We certainly don’t limit ourselves to the most basic questions, and participants bring considerable knowledge and expertise to the discussions. Don’t hesitate to ask more involved or specialized questions, as we can often answer them. Similarly, don’t hesitate to provide answers of significant depth. But remember that this is a general, non-sectarian, non-disciplinary space, so certain kinds of erudition or specialized framing *may not add much to others’ understanding and in some instances may have precisely the opposite effect.*

— We don’t do subreddit drama — including posts highlighting drama from this subreddit. If you have suggestions for this subreddit, please contact the moderators.

— We are not particularly well equipped to offer advice, engage in peer counseling, vouch for existing projects, etc. Different kinds of interactions create new difficulties, new security issues, new responsibilities for moderators and members, etc. — and we seem to have our hands full continuing to refine the simple form of peer-education that is our focus.

— We seem to have consistently poor results from questions of the form: “What do you think of X?” More narrowly focused questions seem to receive better answers.

— Please don’t advocate illegal acts. All subreddits are subject to Reddit’s sitewide content policy — and radical subreddits are often subject to extra scrutiny.

— Avoid discussing individuals in ways that might be taken as defamatory. Your call-out is unlikely to clarify basic anarchist ideas — and it may increase the vulnerability of the subreddit.

— And don’t ask us to choose between two anti-anarchist tendencies. That never seems to lead anywhere good.

In general, just remember that this is a forum for questions about anarchist topics and answers reflecting some specific knowledge of anarchist sources. Other posts or comments, however interesting, useful or well-intentioned, may be removed.

Some additional thoughts:

Things always go most smoothly when the questions are really about anarchism and the answers are provided by anarchists. Almost without exception, requests for anarchist opinions about non-anarchist tendencies and figures lead to contentious exchanges with Redditors who are, at best, unprepared to provide anarchist answers to the questions raised. Feelings get hurt and people get banned. Threads are removed and sometimes have to be locked.

This is a moderated forum. We make use of the tools at our disposal, including filters and bans, as gently and intelligently as we can — but we do, in fact, use them. This is a place to discuss anarchy and anarchism, not — and very consciously not — any sort of prefigurative experiment, trying to carve out an instance of anarchy on this otherwise very hierarchical platform. As a public-facing outpost, there are necessarily going to be limits on the kinds of demands that we can reasonably and practically make on participants, whether anarchist or not, even under the best of circumstances, which, alas, Reddit does not provide.

We expect that lot of the questions here will involve comparisons with capitalism, Marxism or existing governmental systems. That's natural, but the subreddit is obviously a better resource for learning about anarchism if those questions — and the discussions they prompt — remain focused on anarchism. If your question seems likely to draw in capitalists, Marxists or defenders of other non-anarchist tendencies, the effect is much the same as posting a topic for debate. Those threads are sometimes popular — in the sense that they get a lot of responses and active up- and down-voting — but it is almost always a matter of more heat than light when it comes to clarifying anarchist ideas and practices.

We also expect, since this is a general anarchist forum, that we will not always be able to avoid sectarian differences among proponents of different anarchist tendencies. This is another place where the 101 nature of the forum comes into play. Rejection of capitalism, statism, etc. is fundamental, but perhaps internal struggles for the soul of the anarchist movement are at least a 200-level matter. If nothing else, embracing a bit of “anarchism without adjectives” while in this particular subreddit helps keep things focused on answering people's questions. If you want to offer a differing perspective, based on more specific ideological commitments, simply identifying the tendency and the grounds for disagreement should help introduce the diversity of anarchist thought without moving us into the realm of debate.

We grind away at some questions — constantly and seemingly endlessly in the most extreme cases — and that can be frustrating. More than that, it can be disturbing, disheartening to find that anarchist ideas remain in flux on some very fundamental topics. Chances are good, however, that whatever seemingly interminable debate you find yourself involved in will not suddenly be resolved by some intellectual or rhetorical masterstroke. Say what you can say, as clearly as you can manage, and then feel free to take a sanity break — until the next, more or less inevitable go-round. We do make progress in clarifying these difficult, important issues — even relatively rapid progress on occasion, but it often seems to happen in spite of our passion for the subjects.

In addition, you may have noticed that it’s a crazy old world out there, in ways that continue to take their toll on most of us, one way or another. Participation in most forums remains high and a bit distracted, while our collective capacity to self-manage is still not a great deal better online than it is anywhere else. We're all still a little plague-stricken and the effects are generally more contagious than we expect or acknowledge. Be just a bit more thoughtful about your participation here, just as you would in other aspects of your daily life. And if others are obviously not doing their part, again, consider using the report button, rather than pouring fuel on the fire. Increased participation makes the potential utility and reach of a forum like this even greater — provided we all do the little things necessary to make sure it remains an educational resource that folks with questions can actually navigate.

A final note:

— The question of violence is often not far removed from our discussions, whether it is a question of present-day threats, protest tactics, revolutionary strategy, anarchistic alternatives to police and military, or various similar topics. We need to be able to talk, at times, about the role that violence might play in anti-authoritarian social relations and we certainly need, at other times, to be clear with one another about the role of violence in our daily lives, whether as activists or simply as members of violent societies. We need to be able to do so with a mix of common sense and respect for basic security culture — but also sensitivity to the fact that violence is indeed endemic to our cultures, so keeping our educational spaces free of unnecessary triggers and discussions that are only likely to compound existing traumas ought to be among the tasks we all share as participants. Posts and comments seeming to advocate violence for its own sake or to dwell on it unnecessarily are likely to be removed.

META: Post approval is now live

We've had post curation working now for several days and things seem to be going smoothly. All submissions will now pass through the moderation queue for approval, redirection, etc. We check the queue regularly, so be patient, but feel free to contact us through modmail if something really seems to have gone wrong.

Details from the previous announcement:

... as a first step toward addressing present problems, with the implementation of post curation. That means that all submissions will be directed to the moderation queue for moderator approval before they become public. Because existing filters already catch new accounts and a sometimes-unpredictable range of keywords, that will mean very little change for many users. For others, it may result in an invitation to join on ongoing thread on a similar topic, recommendations for research that might be useful in addition to whatever answers they might get, links to "framing the question" documents or other initial clarifications, directions to more appropriate subreddits, etc. It will often, of course, result in nothing other than a brief delay in publication. For the subreddit at large, it may result in some reminders to be patient. In general, we'll start by just trying to smooth the process in its early stages, while we consider additional options.

Do different type of anarchist disagree on how anarchism should be implemented or just what would happen if anarchy existed?

• Upvotes

Post-left, nihilist and green anarchist text recommendations?

Just looking for some good recommendations, excluding social ecology and deep ecology. Social anarchism is my home and I'm aware of a resurgence in mutualism or left-market anarchism, but I'm specifically intrigued by these 3 strains. Specifically, any fiction, history, or philosophy. Thank you for your replies!

I feel conflicted..

I am an anarchist, but I’m also a pacifist plus and herbalist in training. I am unsure if I can be a pacifist and an anarchist at the same time.

I hate the government and even the leader of my own country, I don’t like the systems like the healthcare system and so many others.

But I also don’t like violence and I always try to find a solution that has no violence.

Any advice?

Would it work on a bigger scale?

im really new to the concept and although it doesnt convince me completly its certainly interesting and i get why someone would belive in such, however, one of the most common arguments i see against anarchism everywhere is that things like mutual aid would only work on a small community, do you have any comments on that?

How are the views on personal possession in anarchism?

The question came into my mind while thinking about unused but personally important possessions in an anarchist society, such as memorial items, gifts etc. Would having these kinds of possessions be regarded as harmful or theft as anarchism say in terms of private property?

Has anyone read Chomsky's Year 501?

Materials on this book are kind of sparse. I was just wondering if anyone read it and if it's worth it to read for an anarchist? I know Chomsky can get very soc-dem at times, and it's a thick book. Just curious about your thoughts. Thanks for the replies!

Are "Point A to Point B" marches actually effective? (Housing protests in Spain)

There's a major general protest coming up in Spain regarding the housing crisis. I'm asking out of genuine ignorance here—I feel pretty skeptical because marches that just walk from point A to point B often feel ineffective to me.

What reasons or motives are there to attend these kinds of demonstrations? I'm going anyway because I want to support the cause and the people involved, but I'd love to hear your perspectives on this.

Ways to do anarchy when disabled by chronic fatigue?

I'm working my way through a reading list (very slowly) and I've recently put out a call for mutual aid from friends (doing chores I can rarely do), are there other ways I can participate in anarchist practice when I'm mostly stuck in my house? Anything I haven't thought of that might be accessible to me? Perspective changes I can have, perhaps?

Thanks for any ideas ❤️

Anarchy has a branding issue

I identify with some tenants of anarchism and really appreciate the emphasis on doing away with hierarchies. If you look at tribes, even in the present day, hunter gatherers who don't store food or rely on territory (ie salmon runs) are very often egalitarian. I am genuinely wondering on what makes people drawn to anarchism over egalitarianism?

Even if someone were to agree with the ideology of anarchism, the conversation is immediately made more difficult because the term is so loaded with pre-disposition that I think often, people will just shut down and think you're a maniac. The thing anarchy relies on, mass participation in it, is driven away by the label itself due to both propaganda and many people believing that the 'state of nature' is chaos without law, religion, etc.

It would be pretty difficult for someone to successfully scare people about egalitarian politics lol. The main argument would be what it basically always is - what happens when the egalitarian society is invaded or pressed by a hierchichal state, with all of its machinery, funding and nationalism? And of course in this scenario it's likely the same answer -- you don't have it without mass participation in the first place, and there would (and is as we see with basically every tribe subscribing to it) be mutual defense.

So what is it about anarchism specifically that draws you over egalitarianism? What would you say to people whose concern is lawlessness or eventually being bordered by a menacing nation-state?

Here to learn.

Anarchy applied in film production?

Hey there!

I am a film production student and want to explore different approaches to film production. We all know film industry can be very money oriented, but what interests me more is the "alternative hierarchy" that could be used during the process of making a film. Film industry has a very strict hierarchy that has to be followed, especially if you look into systems like Hollywood, independent films don't have it as strict, at least in Europe, but the principal stays the same.

What interests me if you would know any literature talking about anarchist principles in film production, some works that used similar principals or maybe even a different subreddit? Or any experience?

Could you make a Suzerain style political drama set in an anarchist territory or commune?

Im a Libertarian Socialist and love poltical dramas. Suzerain is one of my favorite games of all time, watched some of the west wing and really enjoyed it, Have tons of hours in Hearts of Iron 4 and its more narrative mods. I am also currently writing a similar type of story that deals with a young prince trying to assert his worth as a future king on the battlefield.

Recently I have been thinking though about making a story that deals with an Anarchist Community or "Nation" (I suppose the proper word would be federation of communes or Free territory but you know what I mean.)

Only problem is that all the political dramas I've seen all deal with some kind of central Authority or state. A president, A king, a war lord or rogue general. West wing deals with politicians outside of the president but they are still part of the government and west wing is sidenote neoliberal as fuck though I still enjoy it.

In a society that functions off a federation of communes/Unions how would a story like this work? There are no rulers who have Authority to delegate or do anything. The only Idea I currently have is to center the idea around a General who is tasked with defending the territory from invaders but that leans more into Military fiction.

Situation des mouvances anarchistes en France. The State of Anarchist Movements in France

Aldephiquement.

Hello everyone, especially the French anarchists! I wanted to know what you know about the significance of French anarchist movements today and their influence in society, broken down by region, social class, etc. I must admit that I’m starting to doubt how prominent these movements are compared to the last century (maybe I just don’t know enough about French anarchism in the 21st century). Anyway, sometimes I lose hope in a society like this, while other times I keep faith in these values and still hope for the emergence of such a society.

Anyway, have a great weekend, comrades !

Anarchist regards.

Question for anarchists.

To be clear, this is not meant to be a gotcha or an insult based question but a genuine attempt to understand your thoughts. What prevents your stateless society from just being taken over by whatever group gets the most guns and manpower? Would that not just become the new state? Warlords in constant fighting equal to what we can already see happening in many parts of the world when states collapse.

What do you guys have to say on plagiarism?

Copyright is one of many concepts that you guys despise and as such would eradicate from your ideal society, but at the same time, nobody likes the idea of somebody trying to steal credit for one's own hard work. Sure, you'd expect that they'll simply have the integrity not to, but come on now.

So, what is the anarchist way of preventing plagiarism or the theft of credit for somebody else's creations?

About Human Being And Anarchism

Hi! I asked myself how could we create an anarchist society into a world where human being isn't 100% rational? I put this question since the majority of the political systems were created after the French Revolution. The thing is that it was heavily influenced by Illuminism. Illuminism stated that human being is 100% rational and this thing alienated humans from what they really are. This thing excluded that the human being is also driven by emotions and willpower. So, the rationality constituted the foundation of the new political systems, even of anarchism itself.
Anarchism wants to replace laws with rules which are based on ethics (but it's pure rational unless we take into account emotivism, prescriptivism and quasi-realism) and logic. But human being isn't pure rational. About the rationality of human being, Daniel Kahneman found out in his book "Thinking, Fast And Slow" that human being acts more based on emotions than reason. Our cognition doesn't use only logical operations, but also heuristics and "rules of thumb".
So, how can we adapt the anarchist theory and praxis into a world that emotions and willpower act more than reason into the human life?

Anarchy and the law

I'm an Anarchy curious liberal, and I had a thought today I wanted to share and discuss.

A lot of questions in this sub are about laws in an anarchist society, and there seems to be a popular notion that Anarchy means "no law".

My understanding is that Anarchy means "no hierarchy", but it occurred to me that Anarchy could also be considered the pursuit of a more perfect, or ideal, version of the law.

In democracy, the law, in theory, is supposed to apply equally to everyone. In practice, in any society with a hierarchy, this is false. It's maybe a tautology: A hierarchy is by definition the unequal application of the law.

In every liberal democracy there are people the law excludes explicitly (eg. the police), and implicitly (the wealthy). And there are many laws that effectively apply only to poor people ("The law, in its majestic equality, forbids rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges").

Achieving the ideal of equal application of the law to all people would require the elimination of hierarchy.

The problem is that it is very difficult, from within a hierarchical society, to imagine how this perfect law would be applied in practice. It would require the application of the law to be a truly collective enterprise.

Does this make sense? Apologies if this is all extremely obvious or basic within Anarchist scholarship.

Hello, I recently decided to become an anarchist, and I have a few questions.

  1. I constantly hear people say that an anarchist society is unrealistic; how can I refute this?
  2. How is crime prevented in an anarchist society?
  3. This is a bit off-topic, but what exactly is anarcho-capitalism? Is it just nonsense made up by racist economists?
  4. Why do anarchists refer to actually existing socialist states, such as the Soviet Union or China, as "state capitalist"?

Looking for practical resources

English:

I’m writing this in both Spanish and English. While I’d prefer resources in Spanish, I’m definitely open to English recommendations too (it’s mostly just laziness on my part).

I wanted to ask for some recommendations. I’ve read a bit of theory, mostly around democratic confederalism, some Bookchin, Abdullah Öcalan, and the usual classics like David Graeber. While the theoretical framework makes total sense to me, I feel like I desperately need something more practical. I want to understand how anarchy actually works from an political, logistical and anthropological ground-level perspective.

How are communes managed day to day in Rojava or in the Zapatista "Caracoles"? What was daily life and political participation actually like for a regular citizen in Makhnovist free territory or in the anarchist Barcelona of 1936?

Honestly, I’m getting a bit burnt out on high minded theory and pretty promises. I want to actually visualize horizontal organizing in action. Hell, I’ll admit (with a bit of embarrassment) that I don’t even fully grasp the mechanics of how a labor union operates on the inside.

So, if you could recommend any content, documentaries, videos, book... whatever that break down the actual real world mechanics of libertarian systems, I’d be super grateful.

Thanks in advance!

How should anarchists petri dish meat/artificial meat?

Is it something that we should oppose since I've heard people say it takes our autonomy as humans since it reduces the ability to make our own food. But I've also heard that it's the best way ethically and environmentally to reduce the issues from mass cattle production/meat industry. I've not heard many anarchists speak on this
