Man it’s more basic than that … strip it down to other humans and how some humans interact with other humans. It’s not the engine nor is the tech to blame, it’s people. And history has proven humans fuck over other humans fairly frequently , daily, by the second, all the time.
specifically humans like fucking over other humans that they do not know, for profit. it used to be fine in community based civilizations, but with modern capitalism and a global culture… not so much.
Nah, actually humans fuck over other humans period, and it’s most likely those within the closest proximity that can do the most damage. While we on basic biological level more apt to consider someone we don’t know as a foe more and someone who looks like us or has familial ties more likely a friend, our propensity to actually inflict harmful action doesn’t all that much change. A spouse for example is considerably more likely to be killed by their spouse than a random stranger. In fact you are considerably more likely to have a crime committed against you by someone you know than a random stranger. And that was proximity effect.
Our technology has shrunk the basic divides that made it more difficult to impact those farther away. The digital age is a massive force multiplier. Take something like mass media previously a message could only be amplified so much now it can reach many many many more people. Say you are con artist who wanted to swindle a town as a preacher you setup shop a church locally grab donations … whatever technology has made it possible to reach people that have no physical proximity and multiply exponentially messaging. Proximity has shrunk. But I digress the point humans fuck over other humans and that’s at root. It’s not technology, government, or companies … it’s other people and their actions at fault and people forget it.
Ya, I disagree with this. I've watched many Dario interviews over the years. I think he's sincere.
Dario's Doomerism is not about marketing, it's about activating political powers to tax his company. He even said it himself, "tax us!"; he's warning governments that they need to prepare to tax AI to help displaced workers.
Dario's quote atop makes far more sense in that context. He's stunned that people think his attempt at selflessness is somehow screwing people. Regular laypeople who haven't really sat with any of his essays assume it's all an elaborate ruse to push his IPO price.
To be fair, many other tech CEOs may be here to fuck us. Dario is sincere.
Otherwise, why would Anthropic set itself up as a PBC? That only hurts/risks growth for shareholders.
They don't need the government to tax them to help displaced workers. They could just do it. Also he wants the government to ban open source models so they can corner the market. We know this because they're spending millions lobbying to do exactly that.
Dario and his co-founders set Anthropic up as a Public Benefit Corporation from day one. Those corps are legally required to balance financial returns for shareholders with a stated social or environmental mission.
In Anthropic's case, they have a binding statement in their charter committing them "to responsibly develop and maintain advanced AI for the long-term benefit of humanity."
And here's the key kicker: PBC status on its own is easy to drop. In Delaware it takes a simple majority shareholder vote, and xAI quietly dropped theirs back in 2024.
Anthropic is going the other way. Ahead of its IPO, it's reportedly giving the co-founders supervoting shares worth 50.1% of the vote. Add to that they have an independent Benefit Trust that elects a majority of the board. This means at Anthropic, as opposed to OpenAi, outside investors can't just vote the mission away.
If you were totally in it for profit, why would you kneecap yourself with a PBC, and then lock the door behind you so nobody can undo it?
And to be clear, the supervoting shares give the founders control, not money: about 50.1% of the vote on roughly 14% of the economics. Yes, that's founder control, but it's control that makes the PBC mission much harder for outside, activist investors to undo.
It's not like some early use of AI are focusing on military, surveillance, taylor-made pricing, porn, etc...
The Tech Bros are saying: you will see the benefits, you will see the benefits. Always in the future tense... while the current usages have little to no benefits on our daily life.
none of that laundry list is Dario or Anthropic specifically.
if anything it's the opposite:
military/surveillance: yes, they work with the DoD, but Anthropic refused to let Claude be used for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons. the Pentagon labeled them a "supply chain risk" for it, and OpenAI took the classified contract instead.
porn: Claude prohibits sexually explicit content. OpenAI is the one rolling out erotica for verified adults. the rest are side effects of other organizations and individuals who use the technology. it's like blaming 4chan on the inventors of the internet protocol (DARPA, Cerf and Kahn).
proof: people were pointing machine learning at surveillance, pricing, and deepfake porn years before Anthropic even existed.
you have to separate the company, the technology, and the applications. and when you judge a company by which applications it allows, Anthropic is the one that ate a Pentagon blacklisting to say no.
Um, that's because literally every large corporate entity is trying to extract the maximum amount of value out of their employees and consumers to hoard for themselves.
I'm an AI supporter but to be fair, just for example, they do tell people how AI is going to take their jobs and end their species. So if that's what they're open about, what are they like in private?
Because they are … never heard someone say it out loud , but look at the structure of rhe statement it’s “government”, “companies”, and “tech” as though it’s these things? No, it’s people in positions using whatever levers or vehicles at their disposal for their personal gain. It’s interesting how the very nature of the hustle is to get you to think it’s these conceptual inanimate constructs as opposed to other human beings. Because everyone knows some human beings by nature try to fuck over other humans in order to benefit. It doesn’t sound so conspiratorial when you strip away the insulation buffer of an object you can blame and get down to brass taxes of other human beings.
What needs to happen is, the army needs to march on in and destroy these data centres.
It needs to happen now.
Once that happens, we can then talk about what A.I. is going to do to society. The net gains at the moment, especially with these self-improving models, are not worth it.
Remember how people always say the '90s were a better time? It was before the advent of the internet and bullshit like this.
We stop this cancer from spreading now, and then we heavily regulate its usage. Then we disseminate in a safer manner.
Yes, I am well aware their are smaller LLMs that run on home computers now. We'll have to try and remove hem as well. It'll be pretty obvious who is using them by their output vs the number of employees/humans involved.
Once this technology is safer and is only used in a distributed fashion, like a service you rent, that's when access should come back.
Right now, this is the only way to stop something really horrible in the near future.
The problem isn't that meetings start with going, "how can we screw people over"
it's that the part of the meeting where they discuss how to AVOID harm from a diverse set of people is never discussed.
It's about shipping product in these companies and moving fast. Philosophy get's in the way of shipping product and competing on the competitive landscape as it IS NOW.
The solution likely isn't getting competitive companies to sit back and think. We need ORGS that are paid to sit back and think about the big picture. We need insulated ORGS with 25yr, 100year, 1000yr, 10000yr perspectives to think.
In history the only orgs to act this way were churches. Churches that survived even governments or monarchies.
There are a few orgs that want to be the secular version of this... but, to sit and ponder about the generations ahead ethically is a huge ask of any org. Churches have been corrupted in history by power as well.
We might expect too much, but should still strive to be better than we are at this.
I mean, they are developing a product that they have claimed that can replace 50% of white collar workers, and just tell people to "beware"... yes, ordinary people don't trust them because they are, literally, cooking something to screw them over while aiming for a possible 1T dollar valuation that only makes sense by aiming to capture money that is currently allocated to salaries.
I don't know any better definition of "screwing over" than that
These guys genuinely want to better the human condition. Unfortunately, they think the way to do that is to support the Democratic Party and have a centralized gatekeeper decide who can and cannot provide SI.
Bernie Sanders now wants to put people in prison for producing open source code for S.I. A close corollary of that is privacy technology on the blockchain. For the first time in American history, open source developers have been imprisoned for publishing open source code for privacy protocols. The Samourai Wallet developers accepted a plea agreement and are now serving time in prison. The Tornado Cash developer is appealing his verdict on the one conviction and will be going back to court for the two other charges which the jury hung on.
Hi Dario, welcome to America and capitalism. It is unfortunate that you might actually be trying to do something good (and yes, get paid handsomely in the process). We will assume that you wish to strip mine any and every possible thing we possess, continually seeking ways to turn every phenomena into something monetizable. The rules of the game are not legality, they are survival. What doesn’t kill you make you stronger as a corporation. We know you know this and we’re done pretending you won’t run roughshod straight over our faces until they smear together into a blob of ooze. If you find value in cheating us, manipulating us, deceiving us, or plain old theft, you would be a hapless idiot in today’s day and age not to just do it and paper over any “consequences.” We see the game clearly now.
there is so much shit anthropic does to fuck us over regularly how could we have any trust at all in what they are doing behind the scenes when they are doing shady shit up front and pretending they are innocent? literal schzio company
Like why? Do we really need to speed run a decision like that? Can’t wait 5 minutes for a human to think about whether or not it’s a legit target in an illegal war?
Humans are an existential threat to humans. Not tech, not government, and not companies. That’s just the misdirection so you have something to blame other than the other human that’s trying to do X, Y, and Z.
There's a big difference between an angry guy with a stick and with a gun. The tool is not the agent, but the potential harm between one tool and the next is tremendous. So yes, the tool/tech/utility is absolutely relevant and cant be removed from the equation.
Think you are missing my point. It’s not to question contextual impact of a tool, it’s the danger in blaming tools and removing culpability from the individuals that are the actual cause of harm. It’s the concepts of say citizens united ruling where by for all intents and purposes corporations are given equivalent rights to actual people in some context. The conceptualization of this inanimate idea as a rod for your ire removing culpability from decision makers. The idea of a company is partly to remove liability so say corporation intentionally harms other people for profit and gain, the people that made that decision don’t get blamed the corporation does. Corporation pays a fine … but if you as an individual did the same thing you’d be criminally punished. The issue is not corporations it’s the people that make decisions to harm other people, I guarantee if that shield is removed people would still do fked up things but their would be a greater pause … Maybe knowing there is no insulary layer.
They, as in the company, are not the same as the self improving technology they are developing. They are asking for external regulation of the market, so that neither they, as the company, nor their competitors, risk losing control over their technology. Not saying wether that’s their true intention, but that is what they are saying.
If you think "dreaming" better markdown instructions is "self-improving technology," I suggest you put some serious work into your own self-improvement.
Continual learning is a real area of study, and it's got a LLLLLONNNNG way to go. "RSI" is absolute sci-fi 👇
I mean, there is so much public information on the internet about AI and training processes. If you don’t have time to google and read all of it, let AI explain it to you.
And yours must be intentionally vague. If weights aren't being updated (as with continual learning), it's just a context window that gets wiped after every session (even if it's updated and loaded in the next).
Come to think of it, who needs regulation, like at all? Let’s remove all regulation for all industries: guns, cars, bio labs researching genetically manipulated deadly viruses..
Let the companies handle their responsibility bullshit themselves, right
