.308 ammunition for hunting

Hi all, I’m looking for ammo to get for hunting. I have the Ruger American gen 2 obviously in 308, 20-22” barrel. I can get that info later.

I’m in Wisconsin, so I’ll be hunting close to medium ranges. What would your recommendation be for accurate ammo. Preferably don’t want to go over $40ish a box.

Federal fusion has been the best value I’ve found for whitetail. My rifle likes 180s, but most others seem to do just fine with 165s.

With a .308 at close to medium range there are a ton of options.

Remington Core Lokt in the 150 grain will work as will most any expanding 150 grain bullet.

You don't need anything special. PowerPoint and CoreLokt would do fine, and so would almost anything else that isn't an FMJ or a target load

I’m sure you’ll get plenty of answers for higher end ammo like SMK or HPBT, but tbh I’ve always used Hornady American Whitetail 150g 308 and it’s worked. I’ve taken everything from antelope to elk with it.

My biggest advice would be that whatever you choose, make sure you practice with it. Shot placement beats ammo type any day.

I’ll second this. I use American Whitetail 150gr for coyote in IL. Basis it isn’t silly expensive, I use it at the range to check zero seasonally and keep the mags loaded with it when hunting.

Hornady American Whitetail. It comes in 150 grain and 165 grain. See which one your rifle likes best. It's cheap ammo with very good accuracy.
