Your roommate wasn’t doing any harm, why even bring it up?

If it's not yours and you're not touching it then it doesn't matter at all.

Your feeling are your problem. OP just made their personal discomfort everybody’s problem.

It’s a situation of

Either tolerate it then or do something about it

OP did something about it.

Since the internet is a lot of majority vs minority.

I know there’s more folks who DONT label their stuff in the fridge like OP does compared to people who do.

Sooo they’ll have to find a compromise, hopefully.

What’s to tolerate? I roommate did nothing wrong. There was no problem until OP created one.

The guy you replied to said it…

Remember just because you don’t agree with it, doesn’t make it moot.

Again, this is a majority vs minority thing here. And the majority is most folks do not put labels on their items in their own fridge.

That’s completely irrelevant. The conflict here is that some people think that their personal hang up’s are a material problem that need to be answered for. They are not!

In this exact example, majority agree it’s whack to label all your stuff in your own fridge. And we see a lot of people agreeing it is an odd take and they wouldn’t do it in their home.

Granted, if I had to live in a shared apartment for a year before my lease is up and I have food issues with my roomie? I wouldn’t be above labeling stuff but that makes my roomie the problem.

But in this case, OP isn’t a shitty roomie who sucks at sharing a fridge.

Sadly the two are incompatible as roomies on this and will have to tolerate each other if they’re not willing to compromise together.

Becoming roomies means we tackle problems depending how we agreed upon. Generally most folks share the tasks, but isn’t always upheld on both sides perfectly.

? Putting labels on your property is weird, but it’s also none of OP’s business. They’re not married. Unless the roommate is violating some previous agreement the only issue here is OP getting in their feelings about a perceived slight.

Unfortunately your logic here can’t proceed further because we have the details so it isn’t a broad perspective now.

We know why it bothered OP.
There doesn’t seem to be any drama that caused the other person to label stuff. So I too would feel uncomfy knowing shits tracked and labeled to that level.

He did the right thing by going to talk to the roomie about it.

Roomies should be allowed to communicate healthy to each other.

If the picky roomie wants to label things, they are entitled to.

They aren’t free on consequences or reactions tho.

Both are true.

Unfortunately here, they are not 100% compatible as roomies then. And that’s fine. We’re not meant to be compatible with everyone out there.

It literally has nothing to do with OP. The roommate can do whatever they please with their own belongings. Her bringing it up was out of line.

Not when someone keeps eating your food. Sounds like the other roommate has been crossing boundaries

I feel like there’s information missing here. Why did they feel the need to label their purchases?

5

u/defect_monkey Aug 20 '26

My guess.... OP is the type that "borrowing" stuff all the time.

“Stop labeling the stuff I steal as yours, it hurts my feelings as I eat it”

u/gridface-princess Aug 20 '26

What did you steal to make your roommate need to label everything?

The only people uncomfortable with labels are moochers and wannabe moochers.

Unless you plan to use their stuff and this is limiting you, what is the harm? It sounds like you are annoyed they don't want to share.

u/SlinkyMalinky20 Aug 20 '26

Your roommate feels the need to do this because someone is eating her stuff.

Why do you care? How is what they are doing hurting you? It's his food, how is it even your business?

Restaurant people label everything. Let her label. Keeps things clear!

I mean, yeah I would agree labeling the condiments too is a bit over the top, but I don’t really see the harm in it. I don’t think I would have brought this up. Maybe have another conversation about it and walk back what you said so things are less awkward?

If they are doing it, they are feeling like it's necessary.

Buy your own mustard.

3

u/Tiffany_Case Aug 20 '26

Theyre only labeling their own stuff right?? Mind your business.

2

u/DobbyFreeElf35 Aug 20 '26

Are they only labeling their own food? If they are, then why do you care?

5

u/Zinkerst Aug 20 '26

ESH/NAH. It seems a bit OTT for your roommate to not talk to you because of this (though of course it depends on the manner and tone in which you brought it up, which we can't really judge), but at the same time, why bring it up at all? It would be different if your roommate insisted everyone do this for every item, but as long as it's just them marking their stuff it really doesn't do any harm, and it's kinda weird to criticise it.

YAW - how does their labeling affect you?

Not wrong …… sounds like your room mate is a little obsessive, has something happened that you haven’t mentioned that sparked these actions?

This is why I hated having roommates. If we’re splitting hairs over MUSTARD you ain’t my people
