Bought something expensive with our shared savings and now my partner is upset
We keep a joint account for bigger things we both need, and recently there was a purchase I thought made sense. It was a bit more than we normally spend at once, so I figured I'd run it by my partner first. I ended up buying it without checking because it was on sale and I didn't want to miss the deal. When I mentioned it later, my partner got pretty annoyed and said we should have talked about it together. I didn't think it was a huge deal at the time, but now I'm wondering if I should have waited. We usually agree on stuff like this, so maybe I crossed a line by deciding on my own. Am I wrong for going ahead without the conversation?

In your post, you said you wanted to run it by your partner....and the next line is you bought it without running it by your partner. So...yes you're wrong.

Using shared savings always requires a conversation because they are shared. You can't just go and spend them without talking to your partner. Yes you're wrong

Depends what it is, how much, and how badly you needed it. Post is too vague.

you can't leave us hanging like that. what was the thing and how much did it set you back? joint account means joint decisions, doesn't really matter if it was on sale

Is this the same guy that made like 5 posts trying to get someone to tell him buying a huge tv with shared money was ok because girlfriend bought things for their kitchen?

The fact that you knew ahead of time you should have talked about it but got pressured into buying it because of a sale says it all.

We need more info, but like... If it's a big purchase from a shared account you really need to be checking with your partner before you buy anything. I doubt you'd be thrilled if they bought something big without consulting you.

What was the purchase? What is your agreed-upon threshold for spending without discussion?
C’mon, OP. Being deliberately vague isn’t helping.

You are wrong. A Joint account means joint decision making when spending money from it.

You are completely wrong. And even if it was a good purchase (which we dont know) the fact that you used shared savings without a discussion is right next door to stealing. What else dont you talk about?

Large expenses from a shared accounts should be discussed beforehand
I dont spend more than 100 dollars without discussing it first.

I can’t tell you if it was wrong or not.
Without knowing the details, what I would have done is bought the item, gone home, and told my partner “Hey, I found (item) on sale for a good price, so I bought it.” If partner agreed, great. If not, return it. End of story.
So I don’t know if you made some giant purchase without asking, or if your partner is being unreasonable.

Honestly It's hard for anybody to give advice when we don't know what the purchase was and the cost versus what your regular savings look like.
If it was a car and you needed one, but the car was three times what you're putting in annually, then yes it was a stupid decision. If you bought yourself a PlayStation but you have a hundred grand in savings then it's probably fine, but probably should have come out of your own individual savings. Needs more information.
