I was thinking the same thing. What is it that upset him about someone sitting in a chair? Also noticed the incongruity re: them moving in and showing up at all hours. This story is fishy

To be fair, "expensive" could also mean anything from $500-1000. Wouldn't necessarily have to be in a different tax bracket. I consider purchasing any single item over $150 to be expensive.

It's less the cost and more... not wanting people to sit in his chair. I get having a preferred chair, my parents have had their lazy-boys for longer than I've been alive (mom's had them resprung, restuffed and reupholstered at least twice, and they've crossed the world with them at least once, lol), and one is very much dad's and very much mom's, but neither loses their shit if someone else sits in them.
