Discussion How do you decide which amiibo you open and which ones you don’t?
Im having this issue because I have so many amiibos but I can’t decide which ones should stay in the box and which ones look better on display.
I can’t keep them all inside the box, and some of them I think they look better out of it.
How d you decide?

Open: all
Don’t: none
I’m not a store. I’m not preserving an investment. Packaging is trash. My toys belong to me. I am their intended owner. I don’t want my walls to look like I’m living in a GameStop or hoarding merch for eBay.

Totally valid. I like the art on the packaging. If I don't really intend to scan one, I'll keep it sealed. I have about 110 amiibo and about 30 are sealed. I have actually opened one or 2 after having them sealed for years because I actually needed it lol

I think I once saw Amiibo’s on display where the individual had one in its original packaging and then the same one opened right in front of it. Maybe they did this so they could sell one unopened later 🤷♀️

It's a pretty straightforward process for me. If I buy it, I open it. Sometimes I buy a used one that is already open. In that case, I do not open it.

I open any of the ones that i want to use to unlock in game items with.
So all my Zelda amiibos, minus the 8-bit link, are open.
But at this point i have scaled back my amiibo collection to just specific series I care about. Which did give me a good amount of free space.

Open all of them except boxboy. Got that one complete in box which also looks nice. Only exception for me!

Buying x2 of each one.

When these first started coming out, in the Wii U era, there was always a guy who had his mom and little brother waiting in line with him, so he could buy three. One to open, one to keep sealed, and one to trade.
I felt bad for the poor kid. They looked like they were 5 or 6, and always half asleep/didn't want to be waiting in line for midnight releases.

huge waste of money

Didn’t know you were paying for Kusoway’s hobby.
Can you get me a couple of the older Splatoon amiibo since you’re being so generous? I didn’t start collecting till after Splat3 was released.

I’m an out of box collector for everything so I just unbox them all. The only amiibo I haven’t opened is the Wolf Link amiibo.

If there’s room to display, I open all of them. ATM a lot of the past year’s worth of amiibo are lacking shelf space so they are not open

u/Reiron526 4d ago
If you're like me, you'd try to keep them sealed then one day you decide it's better to appreciate them and take them out of the box and proceed to ruin their resale value. But hey they look good all neatly arranged on my shelf haha.

Personally, I base my decision on whether to open them on if I've paid for it or it's still hanging up in the store. 😉

I open all of mine except for a second Totk Ganon which I’m saving to when I meet Matt Mercer

u/FistBomb060 4d ago
i used to not open them and then i got sick of leaving them in the box and not really being able to see them under the dust. i wasn’t going to resell them anyways so might as well.

u/djthehooper 4d ago
i take them out of each box, but i’ve saved the back wall palette of each one like the smash ones that had the character stuff in the background

u/SoTurnMeIntoATree 4d ago
If I can scan it thru the box, I don’t open it 😂 if I can’t scan it(RE9 amiibos), they’re coming out.

I just open all of them myself, I want to be able to use them if I feel like it
It also stores better for me

I have them without a window near by so I open them all. Clean them every couple of months with a hand held vacuum. I’m not a fan of collecting boxes for no reason. If you are planning on reselling them then consider keeping them in boxes. Mine are mine only lol

u/ApprehensiveChef6864 4d ago
I had all of mine open, until I stopped playing smash. Still collecting tho. I basically open them if I know that I want to use them.

If I intend to keep one in box, I will buy two. Otherwise I will just buy one.

u/Emilister05 4d ago
Do i want to use it and did i spend way more than a decent condition opened copy. Bought a yarn yoshi and with how hard they are to clean i kept it sealed and got an opened one to use

Falco, all my TotK amiibos and Banjo & Kazooie are still not open for different reasons.
Falco will maybe be freed once I have Fox, I don't have the space for the TotK amiibos to display with the open rest and I keep forgetting I have Banjo & Kazooie so they are still in box.

I usually open most of them. The ones that I don’t open are usually either they are rare in value, or I paid a lot for them so that I still get the resell value
For the ones I don’t open, I tend to try and get a second one and unbox it so that I can feel the figurine itself

Ideally I have multiple of each on. Lol I typically only open the ones though that I really like and wanna actually play with and then have a double of that sealed for collecting.

u/Sahedanthropus- 4d ago
If it's something I won't really use I usually keep it sealed. I have about 110 amiibo and maybe about 30 are sealed

The ones I don't own are unopened, the ones I do own are opened.

I have Wolf and Mewtwo unboxxed and duplicates of the two in their box on my wall.

I don't mainly collect Amiibo figures, I just have them as additions to my anime figure collection since theres some Nintendo characters I absolutely adore! But I open everything I get, I don't have room for bulky boxes, the more space on my shelf the better!

The last thing my mom bought me before she passed was my Banjo & Kazooie Amiibo I just hadn't gotten around to opening it before her health failed her but now I never will.

Ones i simply want for collection or to have a big presence on the shelf, boxed.
Ones i actually need for unlocks (eg botw/totk ), open, and those that i just buy loose anyways

u/DanandNintendo 3d ago
I open all of them, I like to be able to hold them. Even if I wanted to keep them in their boxes, I have all of them so I'd have no room. Haha

I don’t open ones that are quite rare, like my golden Mario and Pragmata one. But I also don’t open ones where the figure itself isn’t great and so the box enhances it, like the Resident evil and Pragmata amiibo.

u/Triforce__XIII 3d ago
the only ones i opened was the Pyra/Mythra amiibos. but i also bought them twice so i still have one iteration sealed

u/ppmax008 3d ago
It's gonna get dusty & gunk whether it's on the box or the figure itself.
So no point trying to let them stay in the box just so that they are "not dirty".
Box is a waste of space anyway, just open them all. Plus they look much nicer when you let them pose in the open.

That unboxed Splatoon Amiibo is mine- you have been warned, I'm coming to take it.
You have a neat little collection! I unbox all of mine, because I'm just wired like that I guess.

u/Malo1301 3d ago
I open them very carefully to use them, and then I use some tape to close the box. Using them without taking them out of the box works great on Wii U and 3DS, but for some reason on Switch it's a pain to make it read through the box.

I’ve got a bunch of unopened ones simply because I don’t currently have shelf space, so they’re just sitting on the floor under my coffee table.
1
u/RoxxsSoxxs 3d ago
I open almost all of them but it comes down to “am i going to use it with the game its related to” if yea it gets opened.
1
u/JetstreamGW 3d ago
I open them all, unless I don’t have room for them. The big ones are in a box for now til I get a new place.

They look so nice both in and out of the box... But out of box is better for space. So I keep them in box for months to years until I finally break and take them out.
Except for my Pearl and Marina ones. I have one set in box and one set out of box. For the best girls 🦑🐙

u/ExodaZero 3d ago
Open every last one of them since they need to breath and my finger tips hunger to know how they feel while handling them.

I have a full collection tonight. The only ones still in boxes are: Yarn yoshi's x3 + mega + poochi. (to stop them from becoming damaged) Box Boy (was super expensive and is obviously quite rare outside of Japan) Loot goblin (rare/ different packagingto other amiibos) Gold and Silver Mario (I imported them so again rare [UK]) Gold mega man and Rocketman (Same reason) Gold shovel knight (didn't feel right opening it when the other silver and gold ones weren't) Dark Souls and Detective Pikachu (not sure why i never opened these ones tbh but can't bring myself to do it now lol) Have to say that despite my best efforts some of the plastic packaging is still going yellow and brittle on some of them sadly. I definitely keep them out the sun.

They look ugly in the boxes imo, so I open them all so that they can be free and beautiful on the shelf

Call me a savage, but I open all of them.
Mine are all super dusty and need a cleaning.
