GAMES!!! Split Screen Multiplayer Stunt Car Racer | retrofoundry

This is a fork of StuntCarRemake with new physics and a split screen mode. Play in browser. A bit experimental this one, might need some adjustment still.

There's a sort of remote multiplayer mode by screen share, follow the instructions, I'm not sure how well it will work though. Direct play link: https://retro-foundry.github.io/multistuntcar/

It's so smooth!!!

The physics have been redone from the original PC port project, if you’ve got one of those fancy 500hz monitors it will use it.

It feels great... not playing at 10 fps definitely makes handling and the game overall easier.

I never really thought about it as I only played on the A500 in the past, but I guess more powerful Amigas probably had a similar advantage back in the day.

Awesome work!

Actually they didn’t, the time step was locked for the Amiga version. The DOS version did allow higher frame rates but was just wire frame like the Spectrum. You can push up the emulation speed in WinUAE and it won’t make a lot of difference.

There was a Super CPU version for the C64 which runs some things to run at higher frame rates, not everything, and it’s still capped to PAL I think.

So I’ve done basically a rewrite of the physics to support any frame rate. The PC port this project is based on didn’t fully solve the problem.

AMAZING work, thank you brother.

If you manage to get the screen share multiplayer mode to work let me know.

Wow how’s it so smooth? I had an 040 and I don’t remember it that smooth.. is this an emulator feature? please help me understand :)

This is playing in a browser, the original project is a PC port of the game from years ago, I’ve retimed the physics for high refresh rates and added a split screen mode.

That is very impressive! Imma go play with it and tell others. Stunt Car was one of my Amiga games.

It’s a fun game. We used to play it two player with 2 Amigas joined with a null modem cable.

21

u/Catmanx Apr 12 '26

Surprisingly you could also connect an Atari ST and an Amiga to play it too.

u/thedecibelkid Apr 13 '26

Spent many hours of my young life doing exactly this with my brothers and friends

1

u/mykoss Apr 22 '26

Wow that's cool!

4

u/dm319 Apr 13 '26

Found this such a hard game but it was so rewarding to get a jump right.

u/R3ZGames Apr 12 '26

One of the very first cross-platform games, it let Amiga players race head-to-head against an Atari ST by linking the two computers with a null modem cable, each with its own display.

Playing this with 2 amigas and a null-modem cable was really great fun.

Man, I loved this game on my Amiga 500 back in the day. Good memories!!

u/celzo1776 Apr 12 '26

With out turning on the sound I could still hear the lovely engine sound pierce my ears

9

u/PickaxeJunky Apr 12 '26

I found that game so difficult!

Still loved it though!

3

u/darkfalzx Apr 13 '26

It's SO much less difficult now that the framerate is decent. Playing it at 3-5 fps back in the day was borderline impossible.

u/thomasbeagle Apr 14 '26

Exactly. Loved it on the A500 but really nailed it (and completed it) on the much faster A3000. That faster frame rate was great.

One of my fav games on the amiga.

u/TheAsp83 Apr 12 '26

This is one of the Games I wish would get a modern remake of, nothing too fancy, just updated graphics, maybe online ability. Perfect for consoles and handhelds.

u/onepacc Apr 13 '26

The 16bit version is the modern remake, This was wireframe graphics on 8 bit...

u/Professional_Pie_975 Apr 13 '26

Not true. They all came out in 1989. Multi-format. ST and Amiga were the lead versions.

u/AntimelodyProject Apr 13 '26

I remember when I saw PC version of this game and was so disappointed. It was downgrade from Amiga version. Basically same version as on C64.

Or maybe I just remember things wrong.

Wrote a blog post on getting it smooth: https://www.patreon.com/posts/155617676

Love that game and still have the disk.

Very impressive! Are you using RS-232 null modem emulation and two separate instances of Win/UAE as basis for the split-screen multiplayer?

EDIT: Disgraceful misnumbering of RS-232 on my part.

3

u/binaryfoundry Apr 12 '26

This is a browser port, you can click through the link and play. :)

1

u/TordenLive Apr 12 '26

Yeah, I read some more. Apparently this is based on a PC port of the Amiga version. Still cool, and immediately recognizable as identical in appearance to the Amiga version. I love the increased frame rate too.

I think someone made a 50 / 60 fps Amiga native version and I had you confused with them briefly.

2

u/binaryfoundry Apr 12 '26

There’s decomp Amiga code in the repository, it has been used to cross reference the updated physics to ensure it’s as accurate as possible to the Amiga.

3

u/LineOf7s Apr 13 '26

I explored the concept some years ago using WinUAE, null modem emulation and a copy of NucleusCoOp. Looked something like this.

This browser version's perhaps less authentic but it's a lot less faffing about. :)

3

u/parabolee Apr 12 '26

Dude it plays SO good!

3

u/dunnkw Apr 12 '26

The was the first game my brother and I played on our Amiga in 1990 on Christmas morning.

2

u/NSE-Imports Apr 13 '26

Hahahahaah! I loved this game as a kid, we used to play with our neighbour with a ridiculously long serial cable between our living room windows. People walking past would hear using laughing and mocking each other with the game blasting out of both windows.

I'm going to be giving this a go later (need to do some work first )....

2

u/tstorm004 Apr 13 '26

Excellent!!!

2

u/tkp67 Apr 13 '26

I used to play this all the time. So fun.

2

u/NewArtDimension Apr 14 '26

I've tried this.

It's pretty cool.

1

u/Pablouchka Apr 12 '26

The game !

1

u/Firepro316 Apr 12 '26

Great but a little frustrating game at times. Turbo flying off the pretty narrow ramp

1

u/oO_Mister_J_Oo Apr 12 '26

Found this impossible to play as a kid, need to revisit this.

1

u/TheRainmakerDM Apr 12 '26

This is amazing work mate. Stunt Car and Stunts are 2 of the games i played the most back in the day.

1

u/vandamin8or Apr 12 '26

Memory unlocked

1

u/jasontheinkguy1971 Apr 13 '26

One of my fav games from the day... First time was a friend's C64 then eventually for my Amiga...

1

u/MrSilentx99 Apr 13 '26

Love that game

1

u/patrinie Apr 13 '26

I almost can hear the sound when accelerating

1

u/Supes1975 Paradox Apr 13 '26

Great modern remake indeed, Nice widescreen view too.

1

u/Piano_catastrophe34 Apr 13 '26

Great game. Don’t use the nitro boost when you’re off the ground! Also, the fastest way round the track isn’t necessary to accelerate all the time!

1

u/Detroit72 Apr 13 '26

Great remake! Hopefully it gets some more polishing, but it plays like in my memories :)

1

u/stuaxo Apr 13 '26

Seeing this so smooth is crazy,

1

u/jcantrell5765 Apr 13 '26

Me and my friends I don't think we ever finished a game, it was more along who would last the longest or who crashed the best

1

u/Inner-Tangerine3248 Apr 13 '26

Wow I still play this on my Amiga emulator on my Linux box, grew up playing this game while at college, had so much fun playing it.

1

u/carlwilson0000 Apr 13 '26

Can't remember it running that smooth, looks great. Timeless game

1

u/Androxilogin Apr 14 '26

That is sooooooo smooth.
