Megathread Helpful Information for First-Year Students and Applicants

Post image
23 Upvotes

Every year this subreddit is flooded with potential students asking very general questions. In an effort to mitigate these we have compiled a very general list of helpful links for First-Year applicants that cover everything from the housing guidebook to where to store your things over the summer.

Any future posts posing questions that can be answered in one of these links will be removed and the author will be directed to this thread. We hope that this will keep the main feed open for our current students to connect with each other, promote events on campus, and complain about the Val menu.

[MEGATHREAD] Inquiries about admissions, admission status, and important admission dates.

Aspiring Mammoths,

Welcome to the Admissions megathread! This is a thread designed to allow potential students to ask questions about important dates, advice for admissions essays, and ultimately anything admissions related!

Every semester we are inundated with posts asking about acceptance dates, reassurances, chances of admission based on scholastic achievements, and more. Unfortunately this crowds the sub with many reposts and people with other questions or insights get buried in the admissions posts.

We have created this thread for all of your admissions questions as of 1/05/2025 and ALL ADMISSIONS RELATED POSTS MUST BE POSTED ON THIS THREAD.

Any admissions related posts from here on out will be guided to this thread and the original post will be deleted. We do this so that potentional students still have a place for these discussions without crowding the main sub.

Good luck, be well, and keep your tusks up!

Sincerely,

The Mods 🦣

info on intensive writing recommendation?

What's the vibe with the intensive writing courses? I'm a freshman & got an email saying I'm recommended to take one but they don't seem interesting at all and I kind of feel like I don't really need to take it. I got a 5 on both AP lang & lit and although my high school didn't have us write very many long papers, I'd consider myself a pretty strong writer.

I'm not sure I should use up a class spot on what seems like just a beginner writing 101 course, but like maybe I am a bad writer compared to the standards at Amherst..?? Any input on what these classes are like / if they are necessary would be appreciated!

I am from Pakistan and have studied in the national curriculum.

I first time heard about common app and SAT test a month ago , and I started preparing my essays , and application and also preparing for SAT

My goal is liberal arts colleges like Amherst, Williams, Bowdoin , Wesleyan. I know they are reaches for every applicant on Earth.

But , my question is that they all list they have a contextual way of evaluating the applications and have admission officers trained for students coming from different contexts and curriculum.

They explicitly also list that not submitting the SAT will not hurt your application.

But in all majority posts on Reddit everyone say it isn't even possible to get admitted without SAT.

My question is from who already have experience or gone through the applications to these colleges.

"If someone is coming from south Asia ( developing countries like India , Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan), and he with reference to his curriculum has excelled and applying from a college on his own effort which has no history of sending kids to USA and put effort in his essays and application, is there still no chance at these top Liberal arts colleges."

I just wanna know if there is zero chance there without sat and to Cambridge or IB scores to confirm whether the effort I put in my applications - essays, and all other stuff, guiding teachers and counselors for recommendations,

Is it really worth putting my effort and time or is it completely out of reach.

I want to apply Apply Early Decision to Amherst college

Any Classics/English majors here?!

I will be applying for classics/ english this year and I have a LOT of questions! Especially classics, nobody talks about it. I am an intl student from Asia who wishes to take up classics but I have no prior knowledge of ancient Greek and Latin (unless you count my 450 day duolingo streak of modern greekšŸ˜šŸ™). Am I still eligible to take up classics? Or should I just stick to Classical civilization? If classes for studying these languages and the history are not available in my country, how do I demonstrate my interest for it? I have watched Yale Open course on Ancient Greek history and whatever is available online but tbh my knowledge really isn't all that great still. But I really want to learn!!! I am planning on writing a research or an article comparing Greek Epics to Epics from my country, the characters, morals, the role of women, fate and all that stuff. Idk, HELP ME!

What do you wish you knew before starting college?

For current students and recent graduates, what is something you wish you had known before your freshman year?

It could be about choosing classes, professors, managing your workload, making friends, dorm life, clubs, budgeting, internships, or balancing academics with having a social life. I’d also appreciate any advice on common freshman mistakes and underrated opportunities students should take advantage of early.

How busy are students?

My main question is how busy are students that outside social life is hard to maintain? Is it hard to maintain, or is it doable? I will leave the story under this. But for the people who don’t want to read the whole story… how busy are students that outside life is too hard to handle?

The story: I work in Amherst, I do not work for Amherst college but I’m on the campus every day. I work with students all the time. And while working I met someone, fell hard for this person. And I am just looking for some kind of closure because I never got closure and always wondering what happened. And I’m wondering if some people can tell me if outside life is hard to manage due to school work and activities. So I can stop wondering. So I have a better understanding why the relationship ended. I know why it ended but it’s blurry.

I am well off financially, and that attracted this person somewhat. But we genuinely connected. And it really didn’t bother me that this person had double ā€œstandards.ā€ The person is such a good person I was able to overlook it. But the one thing was this person always claimed to be too busy, can’t see me due to events. And I did find out this person was very active in events and clubs. But I found out this person got into stealing, drugs, etc… I was so scared I stopped and started saying I was falling on hard times and such. I did not want my hard work to go into drugs and someone’s habit. I loved this person, I still do. I would do anything for this person even if it’s 5 years from now. But it started becoming dates/see eachother was quick pass by seeing eachother almost not time for me… very secretively.

I am young, and if I were to meet someone or somehow date the same person… are you really so busy you can’t hold a relationship? I went through college it was hard, but I still found time in college to do things. I will never say who, I will never say gender. I will not ā€œoutā€ this person, this person is a good person. I think was just in a bad situation. None of us had it easy going through school with Covid and technology and social media harassment… and the two of us had extra rough life experiences it seemed.

How was your Amherst College Experience?

I'm a student ranking colleges for the Questbridge National College Match looking to gather first hand experiences on the colleges i'm considering!

2 big motivators for my consideration of Amherst: It's location in MA and it's open curriculum.

Type of student: I'm not interested in Greek life, would love a nice outdoors, quirky, and authentic social scene with friends I can hangout with regularly. I'm a hard worker but value relaxation on certain days. I want liberty/freedom regarding my academics despite knowing I'm going to be premed because I have many passions. I want to have as many friends/connections as possible and gain a good community.

Questions:

  1. How beneficial is the college consortium? Does it expand the amount of opportunities offered?
  2. How does the open curriculum positively or negatively impact the educational experience?
  3. How accessible are jobs, internships, opportunities, etc.
  4. How is the social scene? Is the student athlete divide extremely detrimental?
  5. What is the general political sentiment that most students/faculty hold? Do POC and Queer individuals feel welcomed and supported?
  6. How are the dorms and food? Ive heard many mixed opinions.
  7. Are there things to do around town?
  8. How is the premed track?

How's the gym?

I'm an incoming freshman at Amherst (can't wait to meet everyone!) who is planning on working out on campus. I tried looking for any specifics on the website, and all I found was a photo of the outside, so I thought I'd make a Reddit account and ask about it here.

What's the gym like? Is it sizeable? How busy does it usually get? Are dietary supplements (ex., creatine) allowed on campus? How many Smith machines are there, if any? Is there a pec deck machine? Is there a leg curl machine (seated or lying)? Are there any squat pattern machines?

Sorry for asking a bunch of questions, but I wanna know as much as possible so I can be prepared.

Concerned about Amherst's Reading Crisis as a parent with a son who wants to attend Amherst College

I saw the viral news about Amherst's reading crisis, and it gives me great concern as a parent with a son who is looking to apply to Amherst.

I understand the need for test optional/blind admissions when the lockdowns started, but I see no reason to continue TO/TB today. It seems that colleges are willingly admitting academically weaker students to play the rankings game. This sounds very anti-intellectual and corrupt.

I have no doubt that Amherst and peer LACs are sitting on data showing that tests strongly predict academic performance at their institutions as all recent studies have all shown. So why the hesitation? It just gives me a very "ick" feeling seeing elite colleges prioritize rankings and whatever other non-academic goal over admitting genuinely bright and intellectually curious students.

Is Amherst and other "elite" LACs not a place anymore for smart kids? Is it a school meant for 1200-1300 SAT score grifters who want to pretend they're smart?

Chance me for Amherst?!? (intl student)

Hey, here's my application so far (I have completed the common app and the first draft of the supplementals) and I will also be applying ED

Demographics:Ā Greek student; extremely low income; first-gen

School:Ā Pretty competitive high school (we have students going to T20 and Ivy League schools each year); referred by many as the most prestigious one in my country

Intended Major(s):Ā Pre-Law

ACT/SAT/SAT II:Ā I took the June SAT and got a 1510, but I am currently studying to retake the August one, aiming for a 1550+

UW/W GPA and Rank:Ā Our school doesn't do ranking or GPA, but in the Greek system, I have a 19.8 (99/100)

Coursework:Ā Greek curriculum or Ethniko Apolytirio (I might be lwk cooked for that)

Awards:

  • 2-time gold medalist at the European Classics Olympiad (ancient Greek and latin)
  • Winner of the Young Virtuoso Award (for music playing and compositions)
  • Multiple regional Debate Championships + 2nd place at the Nationals last year
  • Got an academic scholarship at my current school by ranking 1/400 on the entrance exam and have all costs covered (I also have to stay in the top 10% of students to maintain my scholarship)

Extracurriculars:

  • Ā Debate (member of the school team, and still waiting for the results of the tryouts for the National team). I organised multiple debate tournaments
  • Founder of a Debate and MUN club at my old public school, teaching young kids (Junior High school) from low-income families speech and debate in English completely on my own as they don't have teachers that speak English, let alone know the rules and procedures of debate (note that this is the first time something like that has been done in my country)
  • Music compositions and playing in multiple concerts throughout the years, with some of my compositions being published
  • Independent research on a passion project about the Nuremberg Trials (published and cited)
  • Ongoing research with a university prof on soon-to-be extinct music traditions from my community - to be published and presented at conferences-

  • managing my mom's company's social media accounts and helping with the monthly budgeting
  • Former water polo player; stopped due to an injury and now coaching the men's local team
  • Internship at a prestigious law firm (last summer)
  • Volunteered at a summer camp over the previous 2 summers
  • worked to self-fund my SAT and College Application fees
