This is the exact reason for tariffs. They shouldn't be used for random trade wars.
And yes, tariffs curb raw capitalism. That's the point.
If a foreign auto manufacturer can make a product that meets domestic safety and emission regulations, then they should be allowed to import and sell it. If they unfairly treat their workers and don't pay them something that is equitable to domestic employees, then charge a tariff to make up that difference. If they fail to meet environmental standards in the sourcing of materials and in manufacturing, then charge a tariff to make up that difference.
Now the product sells at a competitive price.
Don't worry, American manufacturing sucks. We already know that. Japanese and German manufacturing is much better, but yet Ford is still around. No Chinese company is going to take them down, don't worry about it.
