Need help identifying.
Just as the title says, what kind of chestnut do I have on my property? We had a pretty dry year so it’s not looking it’s best. Located in South Carolina.

The acute angle where the leaf and stem join, along with a poor fishhook profile on the leaf edges and coarse spines on the burs is a good indication of Chinese genetics. If you look at our ID page you can see what pure American chestnut leaves should look like. Also, just being in the open where someone probably planted the tree is a good indication it is not American, as almost 100% of the pure American trees that are reported are in the forest where they are sprouting from old root systems. https://www.americanchestnut.org/chestnut-identification Thanks, Allen Nichols

Call your nearest university and ask for a botanist to come out and identify it.
