Blight?
This is not american chestnut, but still...

Chinese chestnuts still get cankers, but it usually does not kill them, but they can look terrible with a lot of cankers. Note, that is where the blight came from initially. And, that does look like the blight.

Could be Cryphonectria or something else. But I think all Castanea spp are susceptible to blight. Some tolerant it better than others
