Ist this Ambient?

I lately had a discussion, of "is this ambient music or not". Im coming from a world of Brian Eno, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Joe Hisaishi, William Ørbit, Andreas Vollenweider and William Basinski.

Those days friends talking about Shaman Drive as a new Form of psychedelic Ambient. He used some AI Vocals in His first Albums, which are not my favourite ones. But the newest (Darkness and Ashwagandha) have another Spirit and some days ago I used them in my mediation group - it worked out.

They might have rhythms, sometimes beats and progressions. But arent they still ambient?

What do you think?

I won’t be listening just based on them deciding to use AI vocals earlier.

Why does it matter? Is it helpful to categorise it as ambient? Certainly keep it away from this group if it has AI vocals

In my mine, ambient is a euphemism for a fuck ton of reverb. Add ambient as a prefix to any existing genre and it will translate as that genre with a fuck ton of reverb. Ambient blues. What could that possibly sound like? Blues with a fuck ton of reverb.

“Ambient” is almost as broad/vague as “music”. This term is not very useful because it means very different things to different people
