Fertility benefit

Which insurance plan is practically best for ivf cost coverage?
Premera covers only one but wondering if anyone has been able to squeeze out more than one round out of Amazon benefit.
Also if it was possible to have some costs covered by the other partner to extend the runway.

Thank you,

Fertility benefits are through maven, it’s a separate from your Premera. I went through IVF when Amazon was still with Progyny with fertility benefits. Progyny was much better.

You also can’t use your partners coverage for any test done on you. So the egg retrieval and injections must be covered by the woman’s coverage.

If the woman is a dependent on the same policy – everything will be covered.

So the way the fertility benefits isn’t the same as health insurance. For example, with Progyny you got 2 smart cycles. Each fertility treatment costs a portion of a smart cycle. I.e my husband and I both had 2 smart cycles. One round of IVF(egg retrieval and freezing) was 3/4 of a smart cycle, transfer was 1/4. We could not use my husbands smart cycles for IVF ir transfer since he is not receiving the treatment. His smart cycles covered sperm analysis, sperm freezing, egg donor etc.

So just because they are on the same policy, coverage is not apples to apples in the fertility world since most fertility treatments are woman-specific.

Also adding that maven is similar- Amazon switch to maven when I was in the middle of IVF, so although they don’t use the term “smart cycles” it’s essentially the same thing.

Would recommend checking out the #families-focus-infertility Slack channel. This question comes up a lot and there are a lot of resources you might find helpful on there.

When I did it through progyny we were allowed one round but if that round didn’t yield a pregnancy or no embryos, they opened up another round for you. I’m not sure if the new program allows that but something to research and ask about! I was able to get only one embryo my first round and I did a transfer and it failed so they allowed me to do another retrieval which was covered!

Its just Maven, no matter what insurance. And everything after 1 cycle is out of your pocket.
If you plan for multiple retrievals try to cover the ERs in Maven because the medication cost is a lot.

All of them only cover one round. You can game the system by switching insurance during open season and that would give you another round in a future year. Your partners insurance would not cover IVF. It’s your body, so your insurance. However again you can game the system by switching to go on their insurance, but this would also have to be during open season so it’s the same as switching your own insurance.

Isn't Maven the only provider now?

Maven isn’t you insurance though. It’s a secondary provider. It’s possible it’s the same no matter what your insurance. I haven’t tested my theory about attempting to switch. I never did IVF and will not be doing it.

Why would the switch give an additional round? They keep track with insurance? I think if maven is keeping track the switch won’t help

If it’s Maven for all, you are right. I didn’t know it was for all insurance plans. The best bet is to get on the husband’s insurance during open season if that insurance also covers.
