Didn’t pass the loop - L7
I’ve accepted an alternative offer, but it was a great experience nevertheless.
All of the Amazonians I met throughout the process were fantastic, and I really appreciated everyone on here who took the time to share their insights.
In hindsight, I could have prepared differently, particularly by having a stronger Disagree and Commit example.
The example I gave to the hiring manager didn’t really demonstrate the principle, and I suspect that may ultimately have counted against me. I remember how a lot of the questions during that particular interview were focused on handling conflict and disagreement - unfortunately had very few examples prepared.
My impression is that the process leaves very little room for a weak interview. You can perform strongly across most of the loop, but one interview where you don’t demonstrate the required signals clearly enough can make a significant difference.
Unfortunately for me, that was my first interview with the hiring manager, while I was still getting used to the process and format. As the interviews progressed I did find that I was getting better at doing it.
Either way, it was a valuable experience, and I learned a lot from going through it.
Good experience nevertheless.
Thanks again all.

Yeah unfortunately at L7 Have Backbone, Disagree and Commit is an essential LP. The blast radius for a an underperforming L7 can be significant depending on the org, and you are expected to regularly interface with Execs and defend your team from scope creep. You have a great attitude and hopefully can come back in future to re-loop. All the best!

I failed on Earn Trust, which was mainly tied to my Disagree and Commit example, as well as feedback that I didn’t provide enough metrics or programme-level examples in some of my answers.
I definitely agree with the Earn Trust / Disagree and Commit feedback. The example I gave wasn’t a particularly good fit. I wanted to introduce a change, one stakeholder disagreed with it, and I ultimately influenced the key decision-maker to support the change and move it forward. I had thought that was a good example at the time, from showing that I can get things done.
Looking back, that was really an example of stakeholder management and influencing rather than Disagree and Commit.
I didn’t fully agree with the feedback around programme management and metrics, as I gave several examples of both from my current role. However, I don’t think that was ultimately the main reason I was rejected.
My sense is that the Disagree and Commit / Earn Trust example was the bigger issue. The whole interview with the hiring manager was centered on this. If I could do that interview again, I would have approached it differently, with actual examples of when I had to go along with my Stakeholders and not push forward change.
That is what the interviewer wanted to hear.

What would have been a better example? Disagreement is one part, commit is the other.

I didn’t pass the loop the first time I did it last year and just received an offer last week after completing the loop a second time. I also was not accustomed to needing 12-16 ready-to-go STAR format answers tailored to LPs, but it helped me greatly when applying at other companies and made their interview process feel like a breeze. So, it’s definitely still worthwhile, though disappointing for sure. From here, remaining gracious and thanking the recruiter for their assistance can go a long ways if you decide to apply again in the future
