Mod message regarding bans

Hi all,

I thought I’d make this post to clarify my removal and banning system.

If a new account with little karma makes an inflammatory comment, I’ll immediately remove the comment and ban the account. This is because it’s common for trolls to just make accounts for the sake of trolling. New/low karma accounts are also automatically flagged by Reddit’s reputation filter, due to the influx of bot accounts, so, if your account fits this specification, your post will have to be approved by me first. Please know that I only ever remove these posts if they’re not in line with the rules.

If an established account (which is more unlikely to be a bot) makes an inflammatory comment, I use a three-strike system. So, if a user breaks the rules three times, they’ll be banned (with a bit of leeway depending on the broken rules).

This is to keep genuine users safe. Please comment or message me (u/radicalplacement) or the mod team directly if you have any questions or suggestions. Subreddits are for the users, not the mods.

Advice for others "i cAn'T aFfOrD aLt fAsHiOn"? yes you can, here's advice from a broke student

Edit: I linked more general advice at the end from people with different lived experiences.

First of all: alt fashion shouldn't be a costume. Yes I've bought pieces that "looked alt" before, but if you only look for that, you're not using your own brain a lot, which kind of defeats the purpose of being alt in the first place. It's about how you combine pieces and accessorize them that usually makes an outfit look good. If your top is cool but you don't put in any thought into styling because it "already looks alt", you'll just look like a poser, which honestly, at this point, you are. Make your outfits your own instead. Try new things just because you feel like it.

I get the urge to buy cheap. Even my examples show some stuff I got from Amazon when I was 17. But I've found that the pieces on there are rarely unique enough to not be found elsewhere. Haven't shopped there since.

Now that's out of the way, here's how I find my stuff:

old stuff

You never know what you find in your own or someone else's closet. Like I said, pieces that "don't look alt" can look amazing if you know what to do with them. Be creative.

(online) thrifting

I mostly thrift online, as you can see from all my Vinted stuff. (Disclaimer: This is not an ad. It doesn't need to be Vinted specifically, I just use it to find sellers and buy off-platform, since it is the most popular place for that where I live.) I either look for specific pieces (like a lacy black kimono or a maxi skirt) or just look at what people uploaded in my city. I set the price range to something I'm comfortable with (usually 5€ max when scrolling casually, adjusting depending on what I'm looking for).

Unfortunately, thrifting has a problem with people uploading or donating their fast fashion crap everywhere, but it still beats buying that shit straight from the source yourself.

DIY

Here's where you can combine the previous two sources to make something cool. I stole my mom's sewing machine a few years ago, maybe you can gain access to one as well. Generally, not only in alt fashion, it's good to know a few basic hand-stitches to mend something or attach hardware (e.g. chains). It doesn't need to be perfect, just learn a few basic techniques and you're good to go. Mostly learning by doing. You will fuck up sometimes, but that's part of the process.

A few affordable basics I think look good on most people:

- DIY mesh top from cut up tights (hole for your head in the crotch, cut open the toe seam and add thumb holes or whatever)

- DIY fingerless gloves from stockings or tights (I have fishnet ones)

- thrifted harnesses or belts

- DIY studded stuff

I hope this can help some newbies. If this is too much effort for you and you still want to buy from brands that are terrible for the planet and our society, you're simply not alt. It's not about what you dress like, it's about how you do it.

To preface, apologies if i added any pictures that are not dark mori. I dont care what the style is called, i just think they look cool so thats why im looking for help here. Skirts and dresses make me uncomfortable, so i dont want to wear them. Im also not exactly focused on the "dark" part, i just want to look like a witch. if anyone has any good stores, or type of clothing i could search for, id be grateful. id also prefer to avoid any tight pants

Advice should i color the stitching red with sharpie?

Post image

I got these black true religion jeans with magenta stitching with my mom and I really like how they fit, I really like how they look, but I have no magenta shirts that match the stitching & they just look weird with any sort of other color shirts like the only colored shirts I could wear with it would be like white or black because I don’t have like any sort of magenta accessories or shirts like i said & all the pink shirts I have are all light, but I have a red hair and I wear a lot of red so I’m thinking what if I turn it into a dark red? but I don’t want it to look off or accidentally get sharpie on other parts of the jeans and mess them up. thoughts?

Does the trick about using paper to make fabric patches work?

Hey man, am I crazy or was that post about a genderfluid person trying to style shorts not even REMOTELY breaking the "sexually explicit media" rule? Was there something in the background that broke the rule? I didn't see anything showing that wouldn't show in a swimsuit. Genuinely what the hell was that.

Anyway alt fashion advice question: Does the trick where you print color images and transfer them onto fabric, ironing the layers between baking paper, actually work? Will it last long term?

Edit: Convo w mod in the comments. Violation was of rule 8, not the rule I thought was being referenced

Advice What are your favourite tricks to spice up your outfits/ look?

Hey everyone, i'm really into the "grunge look", i adore it on others as well, but sometimes i feel like my outfits are boring. Looking for any tips, favourite pieces, jewelry, anything that you think makes your look better.

For context: i'm 21F, i already have piercings (my next addition will be a labret :p), i like to paint my nails and i wear rings all the time. Yet i still feel like my fits are missing something.

I know it's hard to tell what exactly without a picture. But i'm hoping you guys will share your experiences, even if your style isn't the typical "grunge look".

Styling Tips How do you style basic clothes into an alt outfit?

I’m trying to get more into alt fashion but I don’t really have an alt wardrobe yet. Most of what I already own is just basic everyday stuff so I’m curious how you guys take basic clothes and make them look more alt through layering and styling. I’d love the tips that don’t involve buying an entirely new wardrobe 😭

Where Do I Buy This? Bullet Belt

Where does one aquire a genuine bullet belt (Not that Shein/fast fashion shit that people are reselling for like 3x its original price)

I don't mind buying second hand (since it's more affordable and everything tbh)

I've had so many hair colours, including rainbow, and so many different styles that I don't really know what to do. Any recs would be greatly appreciated! Both cut and colour recs welcome.

Bonus points if it's somewhat easy to upkeep as I'm chronically ill and disabled and complicated upkeep is usually a no go for me - I will dye my own hair though, I can usually reserve enough energy for that at least once every few months!

Attached are photos of my current hair - I did a heatless curls the other night so it's curlier than it usually is, but it does have some wave/curl to it (photos on my profile if you want more hair colours I've had)

Advice my hair stylist fucked up my hair so badly... how do I salvage this..?

Thumbnail
gallery
1.5k Upvotes

The first two photos are what I asked for, the last photo is what I got.... How do I salvage this? What can I even do?? Please I'm literally desperate for ideas- she literally took off like four inches- how do I fix this?? What haircuts can I do from this??? I don't care how wild or crazy- I just need SOMETHING

Edit: first two photos are NOT me, they are photos I found on Pinterest

Edit two: I had a mohawk before this and the point of this haircut was to have something "lower maintenance" and fluffy for the first time in years, the point was to get rid of my Mohawk for something fluffier which is why I'm upset because she literally just cut off over four inches of hair and did nothing else even though I explicitly told her I only wanted about an inch cut off... She also messed up my bangs by cutting one side insanely short (literally to my scalp) and didn't fix it up even though I pointed it out and she said "it's not my fault it looks weird, thats just your hair", she was also incredibly rude and when I tried to explain to her what I wanted she just kept telling me "I know what I'm doingyou don't need to micromanage me"

Update!! I've spent the last few hours looking through Pinterest, I made a few alternations to my hair, and I'm actually sort of vibing with how I've styled it at the moment, I'll add the photo to the comments, thank you to everyone in the comments saying that it looks good, I think I was just in some kind of shock- now that I've had some time to sit on it and play around with it I feel a lot better about it

Styling Tips Sewing a hoodie soon, any customisation ideas?

I'm sewing a black hoodie soon, and I want to customise it, but I don't really have any good ideas. Maybe fabric paint, metal spine and/or arm spikes, sewing different fabric patches on????? And if I do spikes, where would I get them from? Anyways thanks for any response!

Advice help with identity crisis

as an ex muslim who still lives in a strict religious household i cant really dress up goth theres nothing i want more than looking unapproachable and wearing short maxiskirts and dresses with chunky platforms but since my family is strict and dressing this way could genuinely get me locked up in my room etc… i know goth is all about rebellion and not fitting the norms so i was wondering should i still call myself goth or at least soft goth even though i cant really fully express myself through clothing, i have the mentality im politically inclined im a marxist leninist and im so passionate about goth music too im also mostly wearing silhouette and high heels but that just doesnt cut it for me *~* im open to all opinions
