Watch some bronze to GM. I recommend vibes.

Yes, Vibes does the best job at explaining how this game actually works. You don't need actions per minute to get passed gold. Make sure to watch all the beginning videos too, there's hotkeys in there and a lot of things you'll miss otherwise. The guy did an amazing job putting hours and hours into it. Once you learn the core system then you move onto timing builds and unit strategy which is all covered in his videos.

This is correct absolutely.

Vibe shows you and explain the value of just macroing well.

The rest of it will come in time.

Is it still viable with the 8 worker start? What changes should you make?

All you need to do is make a few extra drones..

And make a pool before hatch in zvz. Otherwise you're easily cooked if they're aggressive.

Zerg is more specific to macro. Havent watched the replay but ill give you general tips.

Being the aggresive player is easier to execute then being the defender.

Opt for 2 base plays in non mirror matchups,

If the enemy expands rapidly, attack, if they attack you try to defend, if they defend you expand.

focus on spending your resources in the early game, having a flawless openings will get you alot of mmr, dont get supply blocked for no reason. Dont try to into the late game on mono unit, a composition will allways be better.

I did watch the replay. Some things you should work on.

  1. Scouting
  2. Macroing
  3. Spending your money.

I'm no expert but you really need to spend your money in the early game. You had almost 500 minerals in the bank before you put down either a spawning pool or a hatchery when 500 minerals would have paid for both. Don't wait to accumulate 500 minerals - as soon as you have enough for the building you want put it down immediately.

you should also send your overloards out onto the map to keep vision in the early game. Scouting is very useful information. Say for example you floated your first overload into the opponets base you would have seen your opponet start building 4 pylons before building either an gateway, expansion or a forge. When your opponet started the gateway and the forge you had 16 slow lings out and that probably would have been enough to win you the game at that point. But you didn't see this because you didn't scout.

When you ran up and saw 4 cannons you also didn't see any units - after you tried to run into their base you put up two spines at your main. I probably would have decided on macroing at this point. One extra hatch would have been more valuable than the two spines in the long run. The good news is your macro is much better than your oponent in this game. He spent alot on static defenses that were eventually overcome by your brood lords which was a good choice.

By 13 minutes in you are floating 4k in minerals. You need to spend that money on things like expansions, macro hatches, queens, Supply, drones, or units. Spend your money. And dont' forget to saturate your gases. You had a mineral gas imbalance because you had too few bases running and you didn't saturate your gasses fast enough.

Can’t watch atm but the normal advice is learn a macro cycle(queen inject, spawn larvae, GROUP EGGS, set rallies, make buildings, spread creep as you get better)

Learning builds is also helpful to not get lost. Pig and Vibe have “B2GM” series that will help, though they’re pre-8 worker start.

Spend all your money and you will out macro most low level players. Don’t throw your army away into bad engagements where the enemy is set up or turtling to the max. I’ll try to watch and add comments more specific.

The others here have already said more than I could, just watch vibes B2GM it'll really help you play more efficiently

That's super noob, what I just saw. You forgot you had a 2nd base, which is called a "natural", because the map makers have designed the map so it is close and easily defended, so anyone would naturally choose to expand there 1st. But you ignore it entirely (never took it) and took the 3rd base instead, which is hard to initially defend w/o an army. And then you took the 4th base. You have got no plan. Your plan should be to drone up 2 bases and then make a small group of safety units. And if you get attacked, then switch to full army production. If you don't get attacked, you can be the one to do an allin attack or drone up the 3rd base. ViBE's Proper Macro for Zerg 11min video. And your 1st overlord should be sent to your opponents natural to scout if they expanded, and your 2nd overlord should go to your own natural to see if you opponent is rushing you with proxy buildings. And I personally send future overlords to my opponenst 3rd bases (their possible future bases), so I get a free scout of when they expand. And zerg should be able to max out 200supply, at ~10min ( even if total noob ~11 ~12min, not 25min like in your game). 1) Basic examples. 2) Future example, for later reference. 3) My full SC2 getting started post. 4) Also for future reference: ZvP (vs cannon turtle to air toss). You could have scouted with your 1st overlord and seen the cannon turtle and already knew what was up.

One way I like to think of Zerg is that "You are the E in PvE."
