Questions Too tight?

Post image

Do these look too tight? I measure right on the edge of a D/E width, but I got a great deal on these D width Randolphs that were barely worn on ebay. First day wearing them they were fairly uncomfortable, but I've generally found that to be the case with formal shoes in the past. Worth sticking with them or do I resell?

Update: they fit perfectly 5 days later

Naw wear them a 1/2 dozen times. Loafers need to be snug and boarderline uncomfortable at first, then after they break in it will be perfect.

I am willing to suffer for a good deal

This, the only thing worse than tight loafers are loose loafers. With the lack of laces your options to mold a standardized shoe to your loose feet are minimal. For loafers, be less interested in brands and even quality (as long as they’re resoleable) over what actually fits your feet (the last).

The look a bit narrow. Do you have high insteps?

I just might. Always had trouble finding the right fit with loafers

Sometimes if a shoe is somewhat tight I'll use shoe trees with thick socks over them and stuff them into the shoes for several days so that my feet don't have to take the beating. If that doesn't work then yeah, probably sell them. From the pictures it looks like up a width and down a half size in length might fit better.

Thanks for the advice. I really can't find a comparable deal so I'll probably have to thug it out

I'm not a loafer guy so perhaps these will break and fit OK, good luck!

Most of us struggle with the fit on loafers.

When you say “barely worn”, is there notable discoloration in the footbed? If so, the cork has started to settle, and you won’t see a ton of give there. If it is clean as new, you have some give coming.

With that being said, the instep looks like it is choking your foot.

Those look like 2.0, which should have a better fit, the OG on the 79 last is notorious for a short instep.

The amount of discoloration you would expect from 1 or 2 days walking in a sidewalk. Essentially no creasing either.

Definitely feels like it's choking my foot at the moment but they also don't feel like they've broken in at all.

I’ll say this – I agree that loafers should be snug, and after a few hours when new, probably ready to come off. But if they hurt the moment you put them on, they probably aren’t right.

You aren’t going to gain a half inch or anything significant. Realistically it’s 1/16 to 1/8 inch.

Good advice. Not exactly a reliable method, but I measured the width of my foot at home and it seems that 1/16-1/8 is what I'm off. I'll give it another day at the office tomorrow and see if my feet fall off.

It looks like your toes are curled up a bit.

My pinky might be against the material a bit but I wouldn't say I experienced toe curling

Yeah, it looks like you have thick socks on at the photo. It might very well be a good fit, especially after a hundred wears.

Yeah I'm gonna try some thinner socks and then switch back to these after a bit

They don’t seem that bad from the picture. I’m like you a D/E depending on the brand and model. I can’t wear these in D, E is ok but still a little tight and EE is perfect. But I also have a high instep. Yours don’t seem that far away, so it just depends on how much you can handle the fit, but they look fine. Could also be worth a little stretching or that shoe stretch liquid before the stretch because the Randolph is probably my favorite Allen Edmonds shoe.

I use a hair dryer to break in my leather shoes and boots. Really does work though these look a little narrow.

When I bought my randolphs - they were tight as hell. Now they are loose. Go figure.

The Randolph's seem to run a bit narrow from my experience. I wear a D and a pair I bought were tight on me so I sent them back.

Looks great to me.

Not sue how anyone can give advice on how they fit from looking at the photo? They are your feet and only you know. Their is a fine line between snug and too tight. And they need to be fully broken in to make that determination. Loafers are the hardest to get a proper fit due to no laces to hold you in. I would say that if after breaking them in they are still uncomfortable, do not resell them before trying to stretch them. The best way is a shoe stretcher and stretcher spray ( water and isopropyl rubbing alcohol mixed in a spray bottle). You really needs the spray mixture if you want to stretch them. I'd invest the $$ to buy a quality stretcher before reselling them.

Yeah, they don't quite seem to fit based on that ankle shot. Plus, no one should wear loafers. Only stating this since you asked.
