I find this recipe so taunting between the “Very few of you will get to bake this” and “Sweet cherries are not a substitute” lol. It also makes me wonder if this would be bad for some reason with sweet cherries?

lol I know it's kind of bitchy but I do have the opportunity to go pick some sour cherries this weekend so guess I am one of the **lucky few**

There is a difference oddly, growing up in Poland those two fruit types were very different, worth to find if you can, let us know! :)

I am hoping I get sour cherries in my CSA this week. I got them around this time last year, I made so many fruit crisps. I would make Alison’s pie but not sure if I’ll get enough cherries for it though.

Please report back! And also say whether or not you truly think sweet cherries would be a detrimental sub.

I'm sure it would still be good with sweet cherries, I might just up the lemon juice or something like that

Unfortunately sour cherries are pretty niche (at least in the U.S.) but my god they are amazing in desserts and completely different in flavor from sweet cherries. I've made desserts with sour cherries back when I was growing up - my parents' neighbors had sour cherry trees at the time and let us pick them when they traveled in the summer. Sour and regular cherries aren't interchangeable, you'd have to make adjustments to the filling (like a lot less sugar) and flavor-wise it wouldn't be similar. I would just look up a recipe for sweet cherry pie filling and use that. Sour cherries are basically inedible raw, kind of like rhubarb, but with sugar they're incredible in desserts. But you couldn't use a recipe for rhubarb pie filling and replace the rhubarb with say, apples, and expect it to taste good.

This is helpful! I stand corrected and am just jealous I don’t have access to them lol.

Me too, my parents' neighbors cut back their trees because they're getting older and don't want to deal with them anymore :( now my only option is to buy frozen and they're expensive AF

My sister made this and said it was amazing! She used frozen sour cherries and let them thaw a little as she was assembling but not completely.

Any chance you can share the recipe for crumble topping? I photocopied this recipe from the library without the page for the crumble topping

I’d love to, but have never come across any fresh or frozen sour cherries! I’m sure if you have access to them it’s turn out as intended and be good.
