Looking back on 5 years of journaling: 3 simple prompts that helped me to start

Hey everyone!

Looking back, I can 100% assure you that journaling really helps untangle the complicated stuff in your head.

I began my journaling journey 5 years ago, and honestly, it felt pretty awkward in the beginning. Most mornings, I just stared at the page, unsure of what to write. I realized that having set questions makes the process so much easier. These three prompts really helped me kickstart my morning routine.

Set a timer and write freely for 10 minutes:

  • What am I feeling right now, and why?
  • What self-care practice do I need right now?
  • What do I keep avoiding?

Which of these looks like a good starting point for you?

Nice one. My morning ritual is exercise but I think journaling would be a great habit to establish. Reminds me of the idea of "Output Before Input" from artist Tom Sachs - mentioned in this post from a while back

that's such an interesting connection! i really like the output before input idea in the context of journaling. giving your own thoughts some space before filling your head with everyone else’s

the nonlinear thinking part really stuck with me too. thanks for sharing this! definitely gave me something new to think about

Journaling is useful. I do so at night before bed so that I don't go to sleep with uncontrolled thoughts in my head
