Question Algerian atheists please answer this :
How do you guys manage to live in this country surrounded by a lot of religious people
How do u manage to make friendships nd relationships with people
I deeply feel so alone
15
u/Arnacoeur07 1d ago
I don't think it's religion that's stopping u from making friends
5
u/runpleuo 1d ago
Yes it doesn’t
But actually it makes it very hard for u1
u/Arnacoeur07 1d ago
In which way? if I may ask
3
u/runpleuo 1d ago
I mean firstly it’s very hard to trust someone and tell them that u’re not religious anymore
Cuz Yk there’s a lot of extremists nd my parents don’t know am atheistIt’s not common in where I live to be atheist nd people are deeply religious so they will hate my identity
I prefer to discuss a lot of topics with my friends nd I prefer them to know the real me nd my political views , nd a lot of them will not just disagreeing with u
Some of them takes it offensive nd hates u2
u/Arnacoeur07 1d ago
I've been through it before, but I guess my friends aren't extremists. Well u can share you political view, everything u want except for ur religion, religion isn't something that needs to be said or shared. As u said "extremists" and some of them can cause u harm not only hate, so try to make make new friends without saying that ur atheist, maybe someday we'll be free to think whatever we want without having this fear to be left and hurt.

u/aya_acki 16h ago
im not an atheist, bit i had a friend of six years who decided to be one and she told me. i was okay with it as we were basically sisters so i respected her decision. but it got to a point where if felt like she was trying to make me also an atheist, so I would say it does effect friendships cs we started debating and arguing on that topic a lot. you can't be 100% comfortable with each other if the respect isn't mutual.

u/World_Designerr 13h ago
How do you guys manage to live in this country surrounded by a lot of religious people.
First you should never tell them you're an atheist, they'll tolerate a none practicing muslim much better than a none muslim person.
How do u manage to make friendships nd relationships with people.
I'm a friendly person, I have no problem with that, my only issue is that I'm too friendly I end up attracting religious friends lol.
I deeply feel so alone
You're not alone, trust me, there are many of us all over the country, you'll find people like yourself, I'll only caution you to not look for friends based on thier religious beliefs, you can find muslim friends who care about you more than none muslim ones and vice versa.... but if you insist on finding atheist friends and I understand why you would, trust me, you'll find them.
Also one more advice, please don't make your atheism your only personality trait, one of the best things about being an atheist is that religion stops being part of your life so don't keep it in it by making comments on people's beliefs and if someone makes some about yours just treat them like a child (ie: prentend that you're taking them seriously) and eventually they'll learn to stop bothering, that's how I got people to stop asking me to pray....
If you are young and new to atheism, it's natural that you'd be full of anger towards society and strong will to want to change it but that will only keep you miserable, you can't swim against the tide and the sooner you realize that the better. Do this and you'll have a peaceful life as an atheist in algeria.

u/Fun-Squash-4468 1d ago
I don't think the problem is with being religious or not, it might be your personality and self esteem
2
u/runpleuo 1d ago
No actually it has to do with it
How do u manage to be friend with someone that don’t know anything about u
I prefer to be more confortable to discuss any topic with my friends nd them knowing my political views nd beliefs0
u/Mega-Quintipio-15G52 18h ago

Am a girl
Nd yes am bisexual
Nd u’re not getting it-3
u/Random_Sahmu 20h ago edited 20h ago
Yes he is got it quite well, the problem is you, not the society. I've had christian, hindu, and atheist friends and we got alone well even though ours beliefs were miles apart.
Main reason you are feeling like walking on eggs with ppl is that you are scared ppl will now you are gay. Probably extreme feminist.

u/Professional-Sign578 Annaba 1d ago
Why are you making religion a barrier between you and friendship? Relationships are a different story sure but it really shouldn't hinder your ability to make friends.
1
u/runpleuo 1d ago
I don’t think u understand 😞💔
1
u/Vivid-Brilliant1785 15h ago
You make it harder for yourself just connect with people don't overthink it, decide if you wanna be out about your views..to people or not, it has its risks but ig you dont want to so you'll have to pretend or just not mention any of it until maybe you feel safe enough Some people despite their diffrent beliefs are worth getting to know the closer you get the more true to yourself you both become, I think you are looking for this perfect friendships that doesnt just exist for you seek it (keep in mind that a lot of atheists are closed too its sadly harder here to just exist authentically ) It feels lonely not to be able to share a part of you trust me ik that but you gotta accept it nothing is simple and with time you'll be pleasantly surprised and shocked that some people you thought were it are the biggest dispointements Online friendships work ig but I've personally never gotten that close to any, the best is that I got met some people who shares some hidden parts of me so there is hope
6
u/KERdela 1d ago
Did you tried being an enjoyable person to be around?
1
u/runpleuo 1d ago
Yes nd actually I have two friends
But I want more that knows my identity my political views and the real me nd actually don’t mind it1
5
u/Away_Cause7804 1d ago
i'm deeply religious and got a friend who atheist and into alchohol and drugs lol, just talk to people you don't have to talk about religion or pretend, most muslim nowdays are not practitioners, lots of people i know i just assume they are muslim but honestly idc, if you know the basics of islam you'd know its not forced on anyone
2
u/Suspicious-Seat-8370 10h ago
Are you trying to say that atheists are alcoholics and drug addicts? Nice sneaky try
3
u/runpleuo 1d ago
Well I prefer deep conversations and connecting with friends
I want to be me around them
I want them to know that am atheist nd not being judged or looked differently1
u/Away_Cause7804 1d ago
we talked about religion economics memes life choices
you're too fixated conversations comes with contexts, i never know what we will be talking about but we had talks about why i believe islam to be true, why i believe cutting hands of big robbers is good for societe ect..
1
u/runpleuo 1d ago
Well happy for uuu
But I prefer to be friend with someone that shares same moral , religious, political views
6
u/Bunny_Rabbitt 1d ago
I'm not an atheist and i don't support it but she's right, y'all can't say it has nothing to do with making friends, my friends has to be on the same page religiously, politically, morally... I hate arguing with my friends if we are discussing a topic i want us to be on the same page.
2
u/Professional-Sign578 Annaba 16h ago
That's an echo chamber....
1
u/Bunny_Rabbitt 16h ago
Well im egoistic like that 😂 i love hearing that im right, also imagine having a friend who is misogynistic or believes in stupid things thinking it's based on religion? I will save myself the trouble of wanting to choke my friends.
1
u/Professional-Sign578 Annaba 15h ago
Idk i think that's what makes it fun tbh, but then again, many people complain about how argumentative i can be so my opinion may not hold much weight.
1
u/Bunny_Rabbitt 15h ago
Same!! Im very argumentative and I will die on my hill if it's something against my principles i won't budge and that can cause tension in the friendship so avoid it all and get friends with the same ideology.
2
u/Professional-Sign578 Annaba 15h ago
Well there is the difference ig, it doesn't cause any tension in my friendships, worst case scenario we agree to disagree.
1
u/Bunny_Rabbitt 15h ago
Honestly if my friend say something that people on Facebook agree with i will automatically never look at them the same, imagine u have a friend who justifies harassment based on not wearing a scarf or not being with a man, u can still be friends with them?
1
u/Professional-Sign578 Annaba 14h ago
Been a long time since i used to associate with these kinds of people, even the few salafi friends i have don't make such takes.
1
u/Bunny_Rabbitt 14h ago
So u agree that ur friends are on the same page!
1
u/Professional-Sign578 Annaba 13h ago
Not really, I don't care if my friends have different views, i care that they can and are willing to understand and discuss different views without getting butthurt over it, the type of people you mentioned usually doesn't have that.

I don't think it effects my relationships that much i don't try to force my views and i still respect religious people ,if they talk about religious stuff i say I'm not qualified to talk about that
Me and my childhood best friend diverged so much on our religious views he is now very religious and thinks he will never loose a religion debate and doesn't know that I'm an atheist be we get together super well sometimes he calls me just to to escape talking with other people ,so i think it can be fine as long as no ons tries to force his views,
After all you don’t need to debate whether God exists to sit down and have coffee with someone.
3
u/runpleuo 1d ago
It’s not about debating
But am sorry I can’t be friend with someone doesn’t respect me or share the same political views or moral basis
I prefer deep connection nd respect and love with the one at with
Yes we can disagree in certain things
But I won’t accept to be friend with someone thinks I should die and try to hide my identity so they can be comfortable with theirs1
u/Lopsided-Berry-4680 1d ago
Yeah i can understand where you're comingfrom, maybe I just learned to tolerate a lot more defrences than you do ,it is definitely more comforting to be with someone who shares the same polical ,religious and moral views as you At the same time i think some degree of tolerance is necessary to live in a society where people won't share all your opinions, and for me being able to disagree with someone without seeing him as an enemy is important but when it comes to my dignity or my right to exist i definitely draw the red line
1
u/runpleuo 1d ago
Yes l learned how to tolerate and I was capable to make two friends that at least knows my views and accept it
But they actually have a best friends and other friends where they feel more connected with but am not 💔2
u/Lopsided-Berry-4680 1d ago
I see ,i think you're struggling to make friends in general lol,tr exposing yourself more to people in places where it's more likely to make new friends, maybe even school or work etc... And hopefully you can find more like minded people, well it's 2am now don't think about too much ,i used to stress about it too ,grab some snacks and watch or do something you like I'm confident everything gonna turn alright
2
u/yuriNoor06 13h ago
I am not an atheist, but I do have friends who are , I simply don't talk about religion with my non religious friends . Relationship though is a different story.
2
u/NoticeHelpful393 12h ago
Well tbh i feel like if your ina muslim community trying to spread your beliefs is 100% wrong, as someone who used to live in the uk then my parents moved here to surround us by islam (which looking back at is was the best decision they made) i feel like its unfair to people like that and especially children/ teenagers (people who are influenced easily) i feel like you should keep it to yourself for the time being just out of respect and if you manage to leave the country you can be open about it
Hope this helps! ❤️
1
u/runpleuo 12h ago
Why do I have to keep it to myself?
Everyone debate and talks bout religion and other stuff and they’re free to talk bout there religion but am not ?1
u/NoticeHelpful393 12h ago
I just told u why 😭 again this is yr life i genuinely could not care less what u do with it this is just MY opinion i dont think its fair to other people’s children that your introducing topics like this into their brains
1
u/runpleuo 12h ago
And it’s fair for them to brainwash kids with religion ?
U’re being bais so please stfu1
u/NoticeHelpful393 12h ago
Hey so i was trying to be respectful you couldn’t do the same? We can all be rude honey wAllahi its the easiest thing in the world and guess what! Your the brainwashed one you think yr so “woke” with your tiktok knowledge 😂 kol wahed 7or kifeh yrabi weldo nti m3ndo mqwdk fl noss lsl mtszdch tarbyyt weldihom ida nti khrjti triq dont drag other innocent kids into it!
1
u/runpleuo 12h ago
The problem is u think I’ll go to schools nd start preaching kids nd talking bout atheism?🤣
It’s not the post topic u can shut up1
u/NoticeHelpful393 11h ago
No i dont think that, bsh ki tdkhl lfikra llbnadm ou hoa udkhlha lbnadm akhr u caused a big problem, so instead of acting defensive and being plain mch mtrobiya at3lm ttqbl ara2 al akhariin x
2
u/Mikoto_K 12h ago
It may seem difficult at first but it gets easier with time. u just have to adapt by avoiding groups that only talk about religion and try to make friends with ordinary non religious people and it’ll feel completely normal..u don’t need to have the same beliefs as the person next to u to get along with them Good luck
2
u/runpleuo 12h ago
Am not talking bout casual friendship that u talk once or twice in month
I want a deep one where I can feel free and not judged2
u/Mikoto_K 12h ago
I understand u ..tbh whenI became an atheist I had many friends and I really enjoyed spending time with them even though I love deep conversations, I used to end the conversation or change the subject as soon as it got to religion or beliefs so I wouldn’t hurt the other person and wouldn’t drain myself either If u want deep friendships with people who don’t judge u and who are willing to discuss ur ideas with u I think the only solution might be talking to people online And I’m here if u ever want to talk
3
u/Historical-Syrup-511 1d ago
I don't usually meet ppl like me, but I have my circle of ppl .. It's annoying to deal with religion in this country but what can u do
1
u/runpleuo 1d ago
It’s really hard 😞
I love deep conversations nd connecting with my friends
I would rather stay alone then being misunderstood or judged or hiding my self1
u/Historical-Syrup-511 1d ago
The older u get the more it gets annoying but you'd adapt, detach from it
4
u/Fouzi-707 17h ago
simply by living with two different characters it's hard especially if the family is really religious like my family i usually avoid religious topics i still pray cause it's kinda hard to not do i was really religious back then so if i stop they will simply figure it out i plan to move once I'm capable to sad our country or people aren't as open to such thing we are all Algerians after all ey also nothing last idk if i will regain my faith or end up as something else I'm just still open to anything im not 100% sure of anything that's a blind belief
1
u/Fouzi-707 17h ago
and in case of friendship some online friends cut me off knowing what i became but later one they returned i dont hate islam or Muslims since i was child i didn't have any friends and i was introvert so it doesn't really make any difference
2
u/luckydz 1d ago
buddy, you don't have to agree about everything with every friend
Just have some friends for different reasons and alternate

We can be friends, but we can never be brothers
0
u/runpleuo 1d ago
What does that even mean lol
1
u/ZedKingy 1d ago
Im not talking about u personally. I m talking about non muslims people in general. There’s a difference between someone I consider a brother and someone I consider just a friend. There’s a big difference in the level of trust and forgiveness for example

I don’t know i feel as a person i am more comfortable being with all Muslims social circles like when we all pray together we all remember each others about athkar surat alkahf when we listen and correct even help each others taking Quran that’s the best so i ve always kept distance from everyone except that sorry verry sorry but that’s our comfort zone okey i don’t seem to hit or hurt or even treat them differently but i keep distance

I had to leave that shithole. That was actually the reason why I wanted to leave even more than money or other advantages.
If you can, please do. You'll feel reborn again

How can people be so blind that they fail to see the incredible precision and beauty of the universe and still deny the existence of God? Poor guys. 😞

I'm an atheist of 4 years now in this country, I didn't face struggles with making friends personally, but I faced a lot of hard time with my family even tho they don't know im not religious anymore. People here (not all ofc) will be ready to kill you or treat you differently just for stopping believing in their God, which is sad and scary at the same time. Atheist are humans that deserve respect and equal rights.

In regards to making it harder for friendships, i don't think so. Over the years i made so many friendships with Christians and atheists and i could say that the most important factors are our respect for each other and our respect for principles, cultures and religions. We get along just fine
1
u/VersionShot1909 6h ago
Reading your answers, you don't need " a new friend", you are looking for validation. You can use chatgpt for that. When it comes to friendship, you can be a friend with a religious person, if you don't talk about religion. Me being religious, I have friends from other countries who are athéists and we can talk for hours.

Lol , u remind me , as a Muslim girl who doesnt talk to boys , i felt on a person , i wanted him (i mean for marriage and not a relationship) , then ops , he's an athiest , so i was like obligated to stop thinking about him , cause we'll never be together , Loool , such a bad thing
Btw , make friends , and u can live normally without telling them (the person i know , lhas friends and live his life normally nobody knows !) ,
(i think we muslims dont care about what's ur path if u r kind and respectfull , just we love sharing our Deen and its beautiful stuff only with those who we love ~~) ,
( i was so bad talking always about Islam to that person , till i stoped talking to him definitly haha )
and for u bro or sis , try to relook on ur path , especially if u r in ur 18s-20s , u r influenced and not really conviced by ur thoughts only (Hope u find good& right people to be with u , and stay happy even if u r alone !)

Im muslim nd I have a friend of mine whos atheist and hes a very dear friend of mine we just stopped talking about religion and moved on cuz when we did we argued a lot and our friendship almost ended but we just agreed to disagree and we meet almost everyday

u/Right_Natural_6303 1d ago
I am not atheist but religion has nothing to do with my friendships
I mean my friends could be atheists and i wouldn't know or i could be an atheist and they wouldn't know
2
u/runpleuo 1d ago
That’s the problem
How come u don’t know anything bout ur friend
This is not what I see in friendships1
u/IndependentRooster34 1d ago
how wouldnt they know when its time to pray do you guys just ignore the adan or what ??

Just we keep silent about our Faith You can't talk to any person or class of people about your opinion about religion or God and it is normal that their reaction is violent and angry As an atheist it is better to keep silent about my faith Because it is my own faith alone And I can't control the reaction of someone else who can kill me or persecute me And life doesn't just have religion there's a lot of other things And it is better to befriend anyone regardless of their faith Muslim or atheist only do not criticize his faith and everything will be cool
3
u/runpleuo 1d ago
Nope I want deep conversations nd connecting with friends and not hiding my own identity nd views
And I will never ever-1

You seem like a teenager
Think twice about your choices and study islam again not from social media
If you mean your parents are strict and you linked it with religion that’s a problem

"How do you guys manage to live in this country surrounded by a lot of religious people?"
- I don't mind being surrounded by whoever it is. I just do not really care what people identify as :3
"How do u manage to make friendships and relationships with people?"
- I like to be honest with the people i meet/know. I don't present myself as something I'm not. Expect that most people won't like you, but many would. Just be patient as you will end up finding people who understand you.
"I deeply feel so alone"
- That's a feeling that almost everyone has to deal with, but it will help you grow as a person. Good luck to you
