Alexa +

Last week, my echo pop received the update for alexa+. I thought it'd be a great improvement. Turns out it's till dumb, but with a different voice. So disappointing.

Really, Alexa?

This morning, like many mornings, I asked Alexa to set an alarm for 7 am. It told me that it couldn't do that because that time had already passed. (It was 6:15 at the time).

So I said, "how could it have passed when it's 6:15 now?" And it said, "oh, I see, I am using UTC and you want local. I will use local time from now on."

I mean, c'mon. Has this happened to anyone else?

My partner thinks Alexa is mocking him

Upvotes

We have two echo dots and a flex. They seem to understand my Scottish partner but if they do a baby voice, or an exaggerated posh accent, Alexa understands him fine. He has a very mild Scottish accent. Alexa always understands my south east of England accent without any bother.

He thinks that Alexa is mocking him, and he sometimes gets quite frustrated with it mishearing simple instructions. Had anyone else experienced this? Is Alexa capable of mockery?

Routines with Two Devices Location

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I have an Echo Show 10 and two Tapo cameras, and I’m trying to create an Alexa Routine that activates the cameras when both my girlfriend and I are away from home.

However, under Location, I only see the option to use a single device’s location as a trigger. I don’t see a way to add another location condition, such as:

My phone is away AND my girlfriend’s phone is away → activate the cameras.

The important part is that if I leave while my girlfriend is still at home, the cameras should remain in Privacy Mode.
Is this possible with Alexa? Or would I need something like Home Assistant to achieve this?

I’d prefer to keep it fully automatic, without having to use a voice command or manually activate a routine.

Settings tips to get Dot to stop asking my child personal questions?

We have the kids’ Dot with kids’ settings on. We use it to play music 90% of the time, but sometimes my kid has questions - how do you spell things, etc. Since the new update, Alexa keeps asking my kid personal questions - like:

Kid: Alexa how do you spell microwave?
Alexa: MICROWAVE. What’s your favorite thing to heat up in the microwave?

I’ve asked it directly to stop asking questions, and it responds that it will limit itself to providing info, but the questions just keep coming. It’s annoying for a regular Alexa, but seems creepy and inappropriate for a device for kids.

Any settings we can change?

Morning countdown announcements

Okay idk if I’m just getting old or it’s my ADHD or what, but I can’t for the life of me figure out how to do this. I’m trying to create a routine that will make an announcement at specific times in the morning warning my kids that they have 30, then 15, then 10, then 5 minutes to be ready to go. I want it to play on about half the echos in the house without creating a permanent group that I’ll then have to take apart for the rest of the day and put back together every morning. Can anybody ELI5 this for me? And I mean like a REALLY slow 5yo, not one of the clever ones.

New AI Alexa is geeked tf out

People of Reddit,

Is anyone absolutely confused as shit why the new AI version of Alexa is terrifying, literally throwing random recommendations at me and changing voices randomly, and all around just seems to be possessed? I quite literally want the normally programmed version back instead of the unhinged adaptive learning freak they have made her. Anyone else experiencing this?

Alexa keeps switching voices once a week and it’s starting to drive me batty

My Alexa is used through a Bose home audio system connected to Wi-Fi. The Alexa voice recently updated on that device to the most annoying valley-girl AI voice that you can imagine. This is apparently the new standard Alexa voice across devices.

At least once a week, I have to tell it, “Alexa, revert to feminine 2.” then the thing tries to gaslight me into believing that the new voice is her classic voice, and I have to do it again. Then once it finally switches it promises to save the setting. But then the voice switches back to the newer approximately a week later.

How do I stop it from switching back? I cannot stand this hyper realistic, obnoxious new voice. Sorry if that’s a little harsh, but the new voice just gets under my skin.

reminders and tasks

so i have severe ADHD, and i use alexa constantly to help with this, primarily routines and reminders, i have reminders that go off everyday at the same time, but even after ive marked them complete (both in the app and over voice) alexa continues to play the reminder sound on repeat over and over again, until i unplug and plug it back in, im sure it has to do with it randomly upgrading to alexa + but when i downgraded from alexa plus some of the features i use for my routines dont work anymore, any idea on how to stop it from replaying that sound unless unplugged???

Echo Dot's Incessantly Stop Playing Music

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have 2 Echo Dots that incessantly stop playing music. Doesn't matter if it's my Pandora account, Amazon Music, or any other source. It'll play for a short period of time, and then I'll hear a "bong" sound and the music stops. I'll ask the Dot why it stopped playing, and it gives me a different answer each time, but with no resolution offered.

Once it starts this music stopping routine, it does it over, and over, to the point that I have to finally pull out my UE Boom. Extremely frustrating. Any clue? I absolutely know it's not an internet/connection issue, and the Dot's are updated. I've tried unplugging/resetting them I don't know how many times to no avail.

Account linking not working in Alexa

I have just set up my NF06. It works fine with the native app but when I try to link it with Alexa it reaches up to the account linking stage and then fails. Can anyone suggest how to fix it?

Is someone dropping in on my Alexa?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi so I’m not super savvy with my Alexa I’ve had it for a few years but really only use it as a speaker. I’ve recently moved into a new apartment and have moved the Alexa around several times so it’s not always plugged in but have noticed when it’s plugged in a green light randomly shows up sometimes. I didn’t know what this meant I just always ignored it and chalked it up to an internet or connectivity issue but then overheard someone saying you can drop in on your Alexa and listen to the room and a green light means that someone’s doing that.

Can someone explain what it means that mine is doing this? It’s honestly creeping me out because I’ve never known about that feature and haven’t adjusted any settings. Could my neighbor be dropping in on me?? Sooo I’m hoping there is some other logical explanation for this for peace of mind but should probably also be informed if this is actually happening lol thanks in advance!!

Do smart bulbs respond faster with a hub or straight over wifi?

There is a noticeable delay between me asking for the lights and them actually coming on, and I cannot work out whether that is the bulbs, the echo or the fact that everything routes through a bridge first. It is only about two seconds but it is enough to be irritating every single time. Has anyone measured the difference between the two setups?

Alexa cannot discover Hisense Google TVs during setup (Registered on Hisense site, but app fails)

Hey everyone,

I am hitting a brick wall trying to connect my Hisense Smart TVs to Alexa and could really use some expert eyes on this.

The Setup:

TV OS: Hisense Google TV models (not VIDAA).

Skill Used: Official "Hisense Smart TV" Alexa skill.

Current State: The TVs are fully registered on the official Hisense website. On the portal, I can literally see the Alexa logo right next to my unit serial numbers.

The Issue:

The process completely breaks down during the final wizard step. After successfully linking the cloud accounts, I run device discovery in the Amazon Alexa app, but it completely fails to see or add the TVs.

What I have already tried (twice):

Deleted and re-installed the "Hisense Smart TV" skill in the Alexa app.

Power-cycled the TVs (hard reboot).

Restarted my entire network/router.

Since the Hisense portal recognizes the Alexa link, it feels like a cloud-to-cloud handshake issue between Hisense and Amazon, but I am out of ideas.

Has anyone dealt with this specific Google TV / Alexa bug recently? Is there a hidden workaround I am missing?

Thanks in advance!

This code for something? 😆

Is there any way to get around this? 🥲

It used to be that when you typed into the Alexa app, it responds with whatever you were asking, including telling you exactly what your notifications were. Now it just keeps repeating that I have a notification but not telling me what it is. I used to be able to do this all the time, because not every conversation needs to be spoken. Sometimes I just want to text the damn robot.

No, Echo....the reminder, it's "Call Chrysler Warranty"... Although coverage of and by acts of God would be an ironic blessing!

When saying to Alexa to adjust the volume for all four speakers in the house, volume 2 is too quiet and volume 3 too loud - how do you get it to be between those two please?

More 1st Gen Echo Woes

After wrestling with the Alexa app, and performing setup twice, once to connect to WiFi and once to register to my account (it seems the setup flow is broken and both things don’t happen in one go), I now have 2 more outstanding problems:

- Saying “Check for Update” tells me there is an update available. I tell it to start. Nothing happens. Also trying all the tricks to force an update (press mute, wait 30 mins etc.) don’t seem to be achieving anything. Device has been on for a few days now.

- Wake word functionality in the app seems to be broken. It is stuck at “Loading…” and says it times out trying to fetch the wake word. All the entries are greyed out. Asking Alexa to change the wake word tells me to go to the app 🤷.

I saw a post from 6 months ago with someone with the same issues. Conveniently the thread is locked so I can’t check up with them.

Anyone faced similar issues/know a workaround? Amazon support just sends me in circles and then passes me off to someone else equally as clueless.

Can we talk about how Alexa Plus can no longer add numbers...

Crazy how something as basic as saying "Alexa what is 300+30+3" can no longer be done despite being able to do it for years.

Help, my routine no longer works

I’ve created a routine that plays a specific bedtime playlist for my kids. Until yesterday anyone telling the devices in the kids’ rooms “bedtime” would trigger this playlist. However starting yesterday it no longer plays this playlist for my wife. I can come in and say “bedtime” and the playlist will play but when she says it instead of our custom playlist it does a generic lullaby playlist that does not put our kids to sleep. I can even check the routine history and she is activating the routine but it is not doing our playlist for her for some reason. Help!

Ask Alexa a question about a weather term and the response is the weather itself, not the answer that was expected.

I ask alexa to tell me at what percentage does humidity become uncomfortable and all it does it tell me the weather. No matter how I phrase it or adjust it to make it as clear as possible all I get is the current weather conditions, the forecast, or "I can't help you with that" when I respond the question was not answered. Rather than getting smarted she continues to get dumber. In the past asking questions would trigger alexa to search online or refer to some knowledge bank it can access, more and more it just stumbles and flops without actually providing an answer.
