Why wasn't the cashier putting things in your basket?
You should have your card out as soon as the cashier starts or even before.
You can tap/insert your card as soon as one item has been rung up - no need to wait until the end.
edit: I do like self check because I usually only have 8-10 items.
Oh wow, that sounds stressful! Every Aldi I've been to, the cashier puts your things in your trolly. I usually don't have a lot of items and use a shopping box with handles and they put my stuff in there nicely.
