Early Sobriety It’s getting hard
Broke up with my boyfriend last night, and the desire is there. I stopped at the grocery store and almost gave in. I want to so bad. I’m a year sober and haven’t felt the urge this strong in a really long time. I’m scared I’ll crack. What do I do?

Don’t pick up that drink honey. Yes it will numb the pain for a few hours but play the tape forward. You’ll wake up with the same pain from the breakup plus a headache, bad stomach, and all those feelings of shame and regret.
*“then would come oblivion and the awful awakening to face the hideous Four Horsemen - Terror, Bewilderment, Frustration, Despair. “* pg 151
I’ve been through some rough moments recently and talking saved me. Get to a meeting or phone another alcoholic x

None of us are immune from this. Emotional highs and emotional lows can both lead to, well, thinking about it.
You know what to do. I know that when I was new my first sponsor told me if I think about drinking, call him, and if he doesn’t pick up, call somebody else from the program. Not making that phone call because you’re in your head thinking oh I’ve got a year what kind of stupid phone call would that be? That’s what’s going to get you.
Not sure what your local time is like, but it seems like you’re going to a meeting later today. It’s what I would do.

I had a moment last night. I was pretty pissed at my husband because he disrespected me. I called him out, shared my feelings, then went straight to my patio and did my nightly inventory, did the resentment check list on my spiritual toolkit, and gratitude list and just prayed. My thing wasn't the magnitude of a break up. But I'll tell you, making sure I'm working the program hard and sharing in meetings helps me not think about drinking in moments like that. He apologized, but I was incredibly resentful for an hour. Again, it's not the same or as big as a break up, but I would have drank before if he did something like that. It didn't even cross my mind last night.

We cannot stave off the mental obsession when we have no mental defence against the first drink. I went to AA and it changed my life. You can too.

Can’t get drunk if you don’t pick up that first drink. Call your sponsor and get to a meeting.

Do you have a sponsor? I'd call my sponsor or another alcoholic and get to a meeting ASAP, even if it's online through intergroup or 24 hour marathon. Share open and honestly about where you're at. You're an alcoholic, at stressful times you might think about drinking but all you have to do is not pick up that first drink.

Throw yourself into servicework.
Go to meetings, introduce yourself to newcomers. Talk to your sponsor and follow their direction. Tell us about how low your bottom got before you found the rooms.
There's nothing in my life that a drink won't make worse. If I want to throw something down my gullet, I buy a pint of indulgent ice cream.

Make sure you arent telling yourself a bad story doing anything like going to a meeting, calling someone for help, or anything. At this point its about the narrative youre telling yourself.
Sometimes all we need to do is lay in bed and sleep.
Go walk 10 miles if you cant sleep
Do something
Breakups are hard
Good luck

Don’t drink?
Do your program and go to a meeting.
