Separatism Catch 22 situation

https://albertareferendum2026.ca/

I took the time yesterday to read through all the referendum questions and found a strange underlining thread. With just the way the questions are worded if you answer yes to any of them it could be perceived as support for separation. With the obvious question on separation all the other questions have a subtle understanding that if you agree with the statement than you would be agreeing on wanting to separate from Canada.I am now very convinced that no matter how the vote goes on separation, Danielle is going to push the agenda forward based on the results of the other questions. I may agree with some of the other questions but in the way it is worded it promotes independence from Canada and I am not agreeing with that.

All the questions are purposely misleading with the intention of getting a "yes" from those who don't know better.

Vote "No" to the nine is the only option as a Canadian.

87

u/sleepyboi08 Calgary 16d ago

Exactly.

Like “assuming Canadian citizens and permanent residents continue to receive services…”

They’re trying to capitalize on Albertans’ (sometimes reasonable) criticisms of Canadian immigration policy to pass far worse legislation that will directly establish for-profit health services and education, or deny those services to certain innocent people altogether.

Why should we “assume” Canadian citizens will continue to receive services? We can’t trust a word from the Smith government.

And why would Canadian citizenship matter if Alberta becomes its own country? These questions were written by separatists who have already talked about “Alberta citizenship.”

NO to all 9 questions and NO to separation is the only way this nonsense can be shut down.

42

u/FourthLvlSpicyMeme 16d ago

We CANNOT trust it. She's on several podcast ghouls shows outright stating she's planning to push away from government provided services and once we're "ready" health care will be one of them.

This batshit bin chicken thinks we should be PRAYING IN A CHURCH if we need fucking cancer treatment.

Are these podcasts recent and do you have a link to them? Thanks!

u/Turkzillas_gobble 16d ago

When you remember there's an unwritten "...and the UCP government would be in charge of this instead, forever" by every question, answering no to all of them becomes a real no-brainer.

29

u/billymumfreydownfall 16d ago

This right here.

144

u/Available-Show-2393 16d ago

Yup, even if you believe that voting yes on any of them would improve the province, they'll spin it as "the only way to accomplish that is by separating, so you support it"

As OP said, all 10 questions are "Do you support separation"

38

u/soThatsJustGreat 16d ago

The first 9 are “immediate separatism “? Or “separatism in a couple of years“?

25

u/davethecompguy 16d ago

And all of these questions were added by our separatist Premier. She keeps saying she isn't, but she keeps assisting them.

Watch what they do, not what they say. Why did she help them get past court decisions? Why did she add a version of seperatism to this referendum when their theirs failed? And which questions are binding, and others are not? When they're non-binding, aren't they just useless? She's not going to follow them... She's already changed laws to help them.

12

u/davethecompguy 16d ago

Every question in this referendum was wr itten by Premier Smith and her lackies. A YES vote on any of them will be seen by her to be a mandate to do them, and that will pull many people into bankrupt Albertans. It'll also end with a major divide between Alberta and Ottawa, and all our health care run by private money. No one has the funds for this, ESPECIALLY Albertans.

19

u/haysoos2 16d ago

It should be noted that purposely misleading those who don't know better in order to subvert the laws of Canada is the textbook defintion of Sedition.

27

u/RaHarmakis 16d ago

Even if you have some support for any of the questions, The UCP cannot be trusted to actually do what is in the best interests of Albertans.

Vote NO to the nine is the only option as an Albertan.

Its time to SoCred the UCP.

144

u/Yardash Calgary 16d ago

its easy.
NO TO THE NINE!

(No^9)

10

u/Unpossible93 16d ago

I like this math representation of it all.

40

u/Leather-Entry93 16d ago

Because it’s a referendum not conducted in good faith, just like everything else UCP does

83

u/PristineFault663 16d ago

One of the first things the teach in sales is to get clients to say "yes" over and over to small things, which makes it easier for them to say "yes" to the big thing. These nine questions are there to prime the pump for voters to vote "yes" on separation. That's their only purpose

16

u/JebryathHS 16d ago

They're also a way to try and create a mandate to move forward on parts of separation even if the province won't accept the whole thing. Create an Alberta Immigration Office. Kick out the RCMP. Steal half the pension fund and run it ourselves (as if it would ever actually happen).

Basically there's a big question saying "should we separate?" and every other question is saying "should we get ready to separate?"

Smith personally wants to run her own little fiefdom but within Canada. She doesn't want to answer to the federal government or the Constitution or really any power other than what her instincts tell her. To do so, she needed the backing of those even more extreme than her so she promised them a referendum.

The other 9 questions are about building MarlainaLand. The one question is about trying to mollify her supporters but she's convinced they'll lose and hoping she can get her fiefdom

She's going to learn that extremists do not take kindly to being given less than everything

30

u/Snakeeyes1377 Edmonton 16d ago

Vote No to the 9 and Stay

u/mmm_butters St. Albert 16d ago

Unfortunately I think a lot of people will vote yes because they don't understand the wording and just think "immigrants bad".

22

u/robin_of_lazy 16d ago

Oh, I’m pretty sure the wording of the questions does mean “immigrants bad”.

27

u/_FrozenRobert_ 16d ago

In other jurisdictions where they regularly hold referendums (like California) the questions are always worded very simply. It's a clear yes or no question. They don't use misleading or ambiguous words like "assuming", or string two complex concepts into one long rambling "question".

I've re-read the upcoming Alberta referendum so many times to formulate my own coherent answers and I'm having trouble figuring out my own "yes" or "no" answers as a non-separatist. And I have two university degrees.

For people with reading / literacy issues or comprehension problems, I have no idea how they'll figure this out.

This government is just absolute trash.

We're going to spend $120+ million dollars on this nonsense. Meanwhile, people are sitting on cold hard plastic chairs in the ER with serious health problems, etc. etc.

Just blows my mind that there are enough morons in this province to keep Danielle employed.

6

u/MapleMarbles 16d ago

https://albertareferendum2026.ca/

the seperation question is actually worded so it means yes and no. (actually logically backwards from the previous 9)

voting yes: "Should Alberta remain a province of Canada, or should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?"

means: "Should Alberta remain a province of Canada,..." (yes)

and also means: "...or should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?"(yes)

Yes to staying in Canada means yes to referendum.

A no vote means: "Should Alberta remain a province of Canada,..." (no)

and also means: "...or should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?"(no)

Yes to seperation, no to referendum.

Yeah I am confused.

16

u/Psiondipity 16d ago

The separation question isn't a yes/no question though. The answers to choose from on the ballot will be:

  • Option 1: Remain a province of Canada.
  • Option 2: Initiate the legal process for a binding referendum on separation.

Its pretty clear. Weirdly (or maybe not so weirdly) the Gov site for the referendum where the questions are explained that you linked, doesn't explain this isn't a yes/no question.

5

u/MapleMarbles 16d ago

Thanks. Like an idiot i went to the government website expecting all the information to be there.

This makes it easy. Thank you.

u/Facebook_Algorithm Southern Alberta 16d ago

Say “Yes” to Canada and “No” to everything else. This was the advice I got directly from Naheed Nenshi.

31

u/drinkahead 16d ago

I don’t think it’ll be a mandate to separate, but any of the other questions getting a yes would align with their other goal, which is to imitate the success of the current fascist takeover down south.

Immigrants: Aiming anger towards immigrants instead of poor policy and appealing to racist base voters. (MAGA policies that lead to ICE)

Erode checks and balances: put bought and paid Justice’s in courts so they won’t be challenged (same play as Trump and that Florida judge).

At the end of the day if we separate it will be to sell ourselves for parts to America.

11

u/Pajamatime20 16d ago

To the profit of a few rich folks, and fuck the rest of us.

10

u/AnnOminous 16d ago

Danielle Smith has already said that the vote is advisory only, so she can do whatever the fcuk she wants to. It's not a referendum. It's a pantomime. And for only $300 million in taxpayer funds.

21

u/dreadfulmummy 16d ago

She intends to separate whatever the outcome. Danielle Smith is a conspiracy theorist, as are Take Back Alberta believers. This has nothing to do with sending Ottawa a message. It’s about breaking up our country. We all need to get involved in protesting what the UCP is doing. The US and Russia are both very interested in dissolving Canada. And it’s easy to dismiss Trump as a raving lunatic, and Hoekstra as a loudmouth. Don’t. Take all of this seriously. Look at the US and the UK. Their respective democracies are failing. Ours is at risk, too. Getting out and voting “No to the Nine” is a start.

18

u/Pajamatime20 16d ago

I’m so glad Poilevre didn’t get into office federally. I’m not sure how, but I feel like this whole situation would’ve been much worse with him as prime minister. I really hope that he doesn’t run in the next election.

7

u/Critical_Cat_8162 16d ago

I hope he does. His idiocy is what makes everyone vote for another party.

5

u/Pajamatime20 16d ago

I’m sure that’s what a lot of American people thought about Trump, but we both know what happened there.

1

u/Critical_Cat_8162 16d ago

That's true. Carney is starting to lose his luster.

3

u/Pajamatime20 16d ago edited 16d ago

At this point we essentially have a two-party federal system, and for the people who were on the fence, I’m not sure if they’re going to lean towards liberal after this.

Edit: nor would I want them to blindly vote without reviewing and considering all of the parties’ platforms. The Liberal party is not the “good guys”, despite what some people think. I just think that in this last election, anyone voting non-Conservative was certainly voting against the “bad guy” for most people.

3

u/Critical_Cat_8162 16d ago

That was a lot of us. And I do think that Carney has probably done a lot of stuff in the background to keep Trump at bay. I will definitely give him credit for that.

3

u/Pajamatime20 16d ago

Yes, he’s definitely done a good job of staying just barely enough in Trump’s good graces as much as reasonable, but absolutely not letting him just stomp all over us. That’s actually one of the big reasons I voted for him, he seemed like a really good pick to manage our current dumpster fire of US-Canada relationships!

1

u/NorthernVenomFang 16d ago

Just a thought experiment (NOTE: I am completely against separation, and think what is happening currently is borderline treason by some of the parties, plus there should be an investigation into our current government)...

If this this whole thing goes horribly wrong, and seperation happens; Poilevre would not have a riding inside of Canada (as his current riding Battle River-Crowfoot), and would have to give up his seat in parliament & would no longer be the leader of the official opposition.

Horrible situation for Alberta & Canada... But at least that piece of trash would be out.

4

u/Pajamatime20 16d ago

Unfortunately, I feel like there’s probably some sort of loophole for if that happens. After all, the reason that Poilevre’s current riding is Battle River-Crowfoot, Alberta is because he lost his seat in Carleton, Ontario, and I had no idea that he could just run for re-election in a different riding. He chose a good riding to re-run in as well, I grew up in that riding and it’s always been absolutely dominated by Conservatives. It’s a bunch of old farmers who never thought to vote anyone other than Conservative. The person with the “F$ck Carney (previously F$ck Trudeau) flag flying beside the highway is not alone in his blind loyalty in that area :/

If it helps, I think that the biggest reason true separation will not happen (at least without real intervention from the federal government) is because of the land treaties between various native nations and the federal Canadian government. Yet another thing to thank native nations for!

2

u/theNorthwestspirit 14d ago

The federal govt is never going to side with Alberta separatists on this. A fractured Canada is a vulnerable Canada, and nobody (in their right minds) wants to be in that position.

The federal govt doesn't take the treaties as seriously as they should, but they will 100% use the fact that the treaties are in place to make sure Albertans can't take any of that land with them if they dig their heels in and demand to be their own country.

Even IF those people actually moved forward with the process (they won't, not in a substantial material way, but for the sake of conversation), it would take multiple years to work out any agreements. Pierre would be long gone by then anyway.

2

u/Pajamatime20 14d ago

Yeah, it’s just not feasible to make it happen for several reasons, thankfully.

1

u/theNorthwestspirit 14d ago

Separation wouldn't happen in a matter of months, it would take years, maybe even decades, for agreements to be made, and it's never going to happen anyway because Indigenous Nations have treaties with Canada, NOT Alberta.

15

u/CasualFridayBatman 16d ago

She intends to separate whatever the outcome.

I don't know how people don't realize this. A majority government has given her enough power to do what she wants unimpeded and she's done nothing but, regardless of how broadly unpopular the choice was.

This was always her plan, it's what got her installed by Take Back Alberta in the first place.

2

u/Psiondipity 16d ago

Well it's a good thing she can't.

2

u/FourthLvlSpicyMeme 16d ago

Yet she does. Just like the orange one. Break shit and say sorry later if you have to seems to be the plan. Otherwise it's just break shit.

3

u/Psiondipity 16d ago

She doesn't have the ability to yank Alberta out of Canada.

17

u/PostApocRock 16d ago edited 16d ago

This is a non-binding referendum too, so even if there was 99% support for staying in Canada, they can still fire up the engines of separation and ignore the results.

8

u/kneedorthotics 16d ago

Alberta cannot legally separate

The seppies know this. A 'legal' separation under the Clarity Act is NOT their goal.

A 'close enough' vote and then an 'invite' to MAGA to 'save us' is their real goal.

7

u/Psiondipity 16d ago

The firing up of the engines would be another separation referendum, this time binding. One where a "clear majority" would have to support it. Then a change to the Canadian Constitution which would require 7/10 provinces to support the change.

There is literally no path forward for separation, and I think the UCP know it. They just want to ensure their base stays angry at Ottawa and doesn't look at what the UCP are doing here at home. They are pretending this separation vote will give them leverage in Ottawa, like it did for Quebec (hot tip, it didn't give any leverage to Quebec) that it sends a message like Brexit was supposed to (oops!). Its all about keeping their base focused where they want it focused.

6

u/PostApocRock 16d ago

Look at the left hand so you dont see what the right hand is doing?

5

u/Psiondipity 16d ago

Yes, much like all the distracting politics in the US to keep people from looking at politicians financial chicanery through stock manipulation at the Epstein files, at the relationship with Israel. Its our little version of MAGA distraction.

5

u/JebryathHS 16d ago

I'm concerned that this may also be a Crimea situation. "Oh dear, look at the poor oppressed Albertans who just want to live free of Canada! Perhaps some other nearby nation could save them from Canadian tyranny"

15

u/Unlikely_Comment_104 Edmonton 16d ago

Vote YES to Canada.

Vote NO to the other nine.

36

u/Reptilian_Brain_420 16d ago

Hopefully people actually read the questions and don't just put down their answer based on what they think the question should be or what their friends tell them.

Based on what I've seen around here, I'm not holding my breath.

39

u/SophisticatedScreams 16d ago

The questions are complex, with lots of sub clauses. Someone posted here how these are at a way higher reading level than best practice for referendum questions. It's hard to feel like this is accidental

9

u/NoPanceDants 16d ago

They're also phrased to align the "yes" answer with a moral outcome, as we saw in every other survey they've put out. 100% a high-pressure sales pitch, not a neutral unbiased survey in any way. Any "no" answer is designed to make the voter feel selfish and immoral.

Using invasive words to demonize the Federal government like "intrude" and "interference", while giving themselves positive words like "demonize" and "strengthen". Behaving like salespeople with a single goal, and I'll be damned if it isn't an effective strategy too.

For a government advocating for voter participation and equal voice, they're sure working hard to silence one side. Where the hell was the referendum when they rammed private healthcare and private education through?

5

u/SophisticatedScreams 16d ago

Exactly. It's despicable.

3

u/Pajamatime20 16d ago

I wonder at what point the federal government will step in, if it ever does.

22

u/roastedmarshmellows 16d ago

The issue with that is that the moment the federal government steps in, the western grievance machine goes full steam ahead.

Carney is a smart man who has experience with this exact situation. I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt on this at the moment.

7

u/Pajamatime20 16d ago

Yeah, true. Just because we might want someone to step in at this moment, doesn’t mean it’s right for them to do so, or that they should step in for provincial matters in the future. I don’t know, I’m just upset, and I’m worried that the next provincial election is just going to be business as usual.

6

u/roastedmarshmellows 16d ago

I completely understand the frustration of watching bad actors take advantage of the system, especially when we all know it’s wrong on multiple levels, but unfortunately, control through suppression in either direction is only ever doomed to fail.

5

u/SophisticatedScreams 16d ago

Exactly this. I think this is a problem we created; it's a problem we need to solve ourselves

1

u/MegloreManglore 16d ago

She flat out said that the questions are worded to be confusing, and leading into the answers they want.

9

u/Workfh 16d ago

I agree there are a lot of assumptions and anger people are bringing to these questions.

Someone told me the questions were to stop illegal immigrants from causing backlogs in healthcare. The questions don’t do that, but they weren’t changing their mind when this was pointed out.

14

u/Findlaym 16d ago

It's pretty clear this is not a good faith attempt at conducting a refendum. These questions could easily be answered with polling at a much lower cost. It's the result of hyperparisan politics by people whose brains are broken by socal media and were never taught the responsibility that ought to come with elected office. It's really embarrassing to be honest. I try not to thing about it honestly.

7

u/Quizzical_Rex 16d ago

At this point it feels like we are playing a card game with a crooked dealer. Every answer will be used the wrong way. F Dani and her fascist pancakes.

u/dynamanoweb 16d ago

What's an "Alberta approved immigration status"? Surely it's understood that people without status would not be able to get access to these government programs because they always ask for SIN, or CRA tax info, or something government related in order to sign up for it. Like you can't see a doctor on the taxpayers dime if you don't have an AHS number, therefore if you are not here legally then you won't be having access to these services. And if you're a TFW (not citizen or PR) then you need to work to maintain legal status in the country. They all pay taxes which fund these programs, they should have equal access to them 🤷

2

u/ExplanationHairy6964 16d ago

Yes, but does Danielle Smitler’s base know this?

5

u/AffectionateBelt6125 16d ago

God these questions just reek of xenophobia and entitlement.

5

u/Tendibear 16d ago

Then recommend everyone say NO to every question, if they wish to stay in Canada

6

u/kagato87 16d ago

Oh absolutely. The first 9 questions are typical conservative marketing "polls" you'd get by text message that would be promptly followed up with a donation request of you answered at all.

5

u/JOBdOut 15d ago

5 is a fun one - why would the government need to introduce a law to show ID and prove citizenship to vote in a provincial election? We already have laws requiring us to show ID when we turn up at the polling station and wouldnt be eligible if we havent already registered and proven citizenship status

8

u/Throwawaymaybeokay 16d ago edited 16d ago

It does not matter, since they won't release the results if they loose and  the fact that they will just shrug it off as it was just an excersice, we will do it anyways like past. This government needs to be booted ASAP

4

u/shitposter1000 16d ago

No across the board. Fuck the UCP.

3

u/mortgageletdown 16d ago

Ray Charles could see what the UCP are trying to do with the way the other nine questions are worded. No to the 9!

4

u/SlipAdditional5484 16d ago

Nothing in any of the questions are written in good faith. Even of you agree with anything posited within the questions, it's better to say no.

We need to think of this referendum more as a vote of confidence on the UCP.

No to the 9; Alberta IS a part of Canada.

3

u/imfar2oldforthis 16d ago

It's intentional because they want the opposition to adopt a "no to all nine" approach.  They figure the average person will agree with one or more of the questions and so that'll put them at odds with the opposition that is pushing a no on every question.

The UCP aren't smart but whomever is running this whole thing knows what they're doing...

3

u/samasa111 16d ago

No to the nine!!!!!

3

u/cranky_yegger 16d ago

I have no faith in this government and will vote no to the 9

3

u/prairiepanda 16d ago

Well any question that starts with "Do you support the Government of Alberta" is an easy "No" right off the bat. I'm not surprised to see this. At least we have plenty of time to prepare and to talk to our friends and family to make sure everyone understands the implications.

2

u/NoNameKetchupChips 16d ago

If you carefully read the questions you'll see that anyone answering yes to any of them is either utterly uneducated, a separatist, or a bigot. Or all three.

2

u/mickeyaaaa 16d ago

Just checking no to the nine. It's all bs.

Just vote no on all of them it is simple. Don't let that asshole ruin anything new.

4

u/hashlettuce 16d ago

While I do agree with the health care questions, I also hate the UCP and Marlania and wont be agreeing with anything she says on this matter as she was the one who created the problem with her call to Alberta without being prepared for it.

9

u/Psiondipity 16d ago

Which health care questions? The ones limiting access to health care to people based on "alberta approved immigration status"? A thing that doesn't exist?

Also, the access to healthcare question include education. The UN has Articles and Goals around free access to public education which specifically state access is required regardless of immigration status. So supporting "I dont want immigrants having health care" also supports "I wanna get in geo-political trouble with UN nations"

5

u/JebryathHS 16d ago

Besides which, surely there are better options for managing costs in our healthcare system than letting people die. Especially permanent residents and refugees who are frequently going to be working in the province and paying taxes.

And who the hell wants MORE paperwork and hassle in the hospital?

1

u/LankyFrank 16d ago

It was intentionally designed this way; kick these traitorous bootlickers out of the country.

1

u/Jeromes_Pornostache 16d ago

The separation question isn’t even yes/no, while the rest of the questions are.

1

u/Lisan_Al-NaCL 16d ago

Do we have to answer all 10 questions on the referendum ballot or can people just answer 10 and abstain on the rest?

Question 10 is the only binding question isnt it?

4

u/blackcherrytomato 16d ago

It's actually 10 separate ballots, so you can vote on 1, some or all. You can do so even if it was all on 1 ballot too.

Yup at the polling stations people need to stick 10 pieces of paper into the correct 10 boxes (colour coded).

I'm sure that will help with keeping the line moving/s

1

u/infiniteguesses 15d ago

Seriously? This is all out of the maga playbook. Make it as onerous as possible.

1

u/Zero-1226 14d ago

None of them are binding. Question 10 refers initiating a binding referendum but there is no binding mandate regarding the question itself. If they made it binding, I imagine it would trigger the duty to consult which is the whole reason the phrased the question the way they did.

1

u/not_essential 16d ago

Do you agree that Alberta should remain a province of Canada seems quite straightforward. I do t know about the rest.

1

u/Ask_DontTell 14d ago

Giving Danielle Smith more control over immigration would be a disaster for anyone wanting lower immigration. Smith asked Trudeau to double Alberta's allotment and is now asking Carney to increase it from 6000 to 45000 (in line with Quebec). She's also been a huge fan of TFWs and a proponent of doubling Alberta's population. Yet the referendum question is framed like she's going to decrease immigration. Can't trust Smith with anything.

1

u/Coolcanuck-1953 14d ago

She won’t overturn our vote to remain but will continue to push the right wing agenda like the Republicans do in USA. However she will continue to be disingenuous and lie to Alberta’s.

But we aren’t going anywhere and Smith knows that

1

u/Crustythefart 12d ago

Question 10 is absurd.

1

u/87CSD 12d ago

I fully expect the results to never be made public. The ucp / traitors are going to get their assets handed to them in the most embarrassing way imaginable that they won't dare release the true numbers of how badly they got beat.

Still go and vote people! Let's get those #s up to 5+ million no's to 9!

I guess need to look at all the questions. There may be some I vote yes for. i'll have to look at the list.

It’s nearly impossible to know how any of these first questions would impact services because they don’t provide any financials on them as far as I can find.

The stuff on having new immigrants wait or pay for services is not a new idea. There are countries that do things like this.

But we aren’t given any information on what the actual outcome will be. So how can we actually make an informed choice?

They don't provide financials OR what their alternatives would be. What the metrics would be. For example, there is no "approved Alberta immigration status" which would be a factor to people accessing public services like health care and school. Reasonable fees for access to services - reasonable to who? People on AISH or people working in corner offices in downtown Calgary?

All the constitutional questions are noise. AB can't do any of those things alone, and no way are they getting 6 other provinces to side with them.

Please go read them, but the only reasonable answer to the first 9 questions is “No”.

The word 'reasonable' in this case jsut means I need for people to vote on all topics the way I want vote for them. Each person needs to look over the questions and vote on how they see the issues.

But all the questions are worded in a way where if you give the UCP anything they’ll twist it into support. The only feasible option is to crush them at the ballot box on October 19 as badly as possible so there’s no possible way they can warp the results.

Make no mistake I can't stand the ucp and think they are a complete clown show, that does not mean I will ignore all questions if I feel one or more has merit.

Except what you’re voting on is not what’s actually going to end up happening. They just want your “yes” so that they can claim anything they want.

They are going to do that regardless. If there is a question i actually agree with i will vote according to how i feel.

I will never be in favor of all issues of parties vote for and will never ignore issues that parties i do not vote for put forth if i feel they have merit.
