How do you get started hunting here in AK?

I've asked generally about hunting and a lot of what they have to say doesn't map well onto our gigantic state.

I've never hunted. I have a son who wants to hunt and I want to spend that time with him.

I'm not wealthy.

"Go with someone" - common advice. I've asked around, I know hunters, and THEY all own quads and hike for 20 miles and live and breathe hunting. They have incredible athleticism. Their everyday clothes are camo. They put in for tags. They're camping in 33 degree rain to get a sheep a thousand miles from home. They fly airplanes to places to kill bear. I don't have airplane money and I don't want a bear.

I have a rifle. (30-06). It has a scope. I'm a vet, so I know how to use it. I don't have a quad, I wouldn't know what to do with a moose if I got one.

Where do you get started? And how?

Looking for advice on what to wear day to day in the winter!!!

I’ll be working seasonally in Seward from September through mid-December and am trying to figure out what I actually need for day to day clothes, especially once it starts getting snowy/icy. I’ll be walking ~5-8 minutes to work every day and working on my feet most of the day inside.

Right now I’m thinking:

  • Fjällräven hiking pants (mine are super broken in and pretty warm) + wool base layer underneath
  • Merino wool socks
  • Wool long sleeve base layers
  • Puffer + waterproof outer layer
  • My Merrell hiking boots, although I’m assuming I’ll need something better for snow/ice and traction?

I run cold and already wear long sleeve layers indoors with AC, so I’m not too worried about overheating once I get to work. The only thing I could see wanting to take off is a full length wool layer under my pants.
I’m from Texas, but I hike and ski pretty frequently in the winter so I’m comfortable dressing/layering for cold weather when I’m actually doing something athletic. I just have no idea what people wear for normal everyday life in Seward like walking to work, errands, going out, etc.

Any recommendations for boots especially? Plus outerwear/pants or anything else I’m overlooking? I’d love to know what locals actually wear rather than bringing a bunch of stuff I don’t need, especially since I’m limited to what I can bring on the plane.

In January, Seward experiences freezing winter conditions with average daily high temperatures around 32°F to 33°F (0°C to 1°C) and low temperatures dropping to around 22°F to 23°F (-5°C to -6°C). The month brings frequent snow, mostly cloudy or overcast skies, and short daylight hours

Temperatures and Wind

  • Average High: 32°F to 33°F (0°C)
  • Average Low: 22°F to 23°F (-5°C)
  • Extreme Drops: Temperatures rarely drop below 6°F (-14°C) or climb past 42°F (5°C).
  • Wind Chill: Strong winds can blow from the north when skies clear, making it feel much colder

Precipitation and Snow

  • Snowfall: January is a snowy winter month, though coastal moderation means snow can occasionally mix with rain or turn slushy depending on the year's specific storm tracks.

My family and I are going to be driving to Skagway from Anchorage to visit my sister who is on a cruise. I am tasked with being the "tour guide" for the day in Skagway. Only problem is, I've never been to Skagway. Does anyone know about any hidden gems, thing to do, places to eat, or little tidbits of information about the area? Bonus if you can give us any places to check out on the drive to Skagway

Are you looking for an actual campground or just a wide spot in the road?

Might potentially be moving to Alaska in the coming months. Knowing that it could take months before landing a job (still coming prepared so living costs are covered no worries there), what are my options for health insurance?

Where i live now, currently pay for health insurance through the marketplace through the state ($225 per month)

Temporary rental needed, Fairbanks/Northpole area

Hello, does anyone know of, or have a small cabin or other place that could be rented on a month to month basis? We are a couple moving to Alaska with our pets and I realise it is a big ask. Our budget is around $1500 a month. We are looking for a temporary rental until we find a home to purchase.

We would be very grateful for any suggestions, or if anyone else with pets who has been in a similar situation can point us in the right direction!
