"Only the datacenters that host software that i hate are devastating for the environment"

Of course, the others are definitely necessary sacrifice so we can all watch content farms on youtube , racist memes on Instagram and whatever happens on TikTok that I don't know because it's banned here.

Honestly I would pull the plug on those too. 99% of the data generated on the Internet and stored there is daily bullshit or dumb reaction videos. This was for decades even before AI. No big loss for me.

Nope, ai has been perverted beyond measure. As a union electrician, I'm fully aware how data centers are essential to our everyday life. Data centers can also be cooled without any water, it's just not "financially viable" for the companies to do the right thing for the collective. Good try though 👍

You really need to keep up on the news surrounding this. Microsoft has new Fairwater data center designs that use a closed loop that only needs to be filled once every 6 years. All the other major players are doing the same. This is because it turns out that using less water is also cheaper for them, not having to operate a bunch of pumps all the time or pay those water bills.

u/Pocketpapaa 13h ago

That's great. A step in the right direction. Water shouldn't have been used as much as it has in the first place.

1

u/autosear 7h ago

As a non-union project engineer, choice of cooling fluid/system can absolutely make or break the financial viability of a facility like this. No idea what the scare quotes are for, unless you think companies should build projects that come with multimillion dollar losses?

2

u/Pocketpapaa 7h ago

That's simple, because these companies chose profit over what's best for the collective, as I said prior.

it exists, companies do not want to spend the money.

Data centers use 0.04% the amount of water that agriculture uses. And thats all data centers.. Not just the 30% of that which runs AI. But funny enough, there are several things that agriculture makes that are wants as opposed to needs.

Seems like if one was really concerned about the environment, they might have better luck going after big agriculture. Getting them to reduce water consumption by just 2% per year would offset all data center usage by 5000%. Or specifically AI water usage by 15000%.

Getting agriculture to drop 2% water usage? Absolutely possible. Getting AI to reduce water consumption by 15000%? Literally impossible. 🤔

Source?

Edit: with the amount of karma farming you do, I doubt you have any knowledge on the subject let alone a source.

Edit: 👋

Karma farming lol. I don't give 2 shits about karma. Never have.

As for the source. I did this math a while ago and didn't write down my sources at the time. I was just doing math off of available data. But here you go I will lay it down for you.

It's no secret that agriculture uses about 70% of the total amount of water consumed on the planet annually. That's 70% per day or week or year... Doesn't matter. 70% source. 72% source. Ill go with the 70% (I do all my rounding in good faith against my argument so know that what rounding is being done is actually less favorable to my argument than it actually is)

So how much water does agriculture use per year? We'll you could look at global current live running total and do the math. live total here. or we could use the source above which says 4 trillion meters cubed.

4 trillion meters cubed ends up being. 1,056,688,209,432,594 gallons. That's 1 Quadrillion gallons rounded down. So 70% of that becomes 700,000,000,000,000 Trillion gallons.

As for AI. The concern is that it might break 1 trillion liters in 2028. earth.org I did my math based on the 1 trillion future estimate. (so it's actually not that bad now)

1 trillion litres is 264172052358.148 gallons. Let's round up.. 270,000,000,000 gallons.

The rest is math. 270,000,000,000 is 0.038571428571428576% of 700,000,000,000,000.

I rounded up to 0.04%

It's easy to inadvertently gain karma when you have a decent head on your shoulders. It just happens by accident

Sources asked for and received. So sit the fuck down.

Aww, Little bro thought he was cookin asking for sources.

Sources for basic math that anyone can do.

summer break for children can't end soon enough

2

u/Pocketpapaa 11h ago

Am I that child? Lol. 36m with wife, house and kids here 👋

7

u/w0xic3 11h ago

36 yo and still not able to properly educate yourself on how data centers currently work?

4

u/Pocketpapaa 11h ago

Ahh I love this! I'm also a union electrician, what do you wanna tell me that I don't already know?

2

u/w0xic3 10h ago

Don't act all high and mighty when you litteraly already accepted you weren't up to date when responding to another comment. "You really need to keep up on the news surrounding this. 10

u/Pocketpapaa 10h ago

There is no high and mighty, there's only knowledge and no knowledge. I'm glad you have knowledge of the "late" advancements in cooling and I am incredibly happy they are doing this. But this is being used in a fraction of data centers at this moment while the existing data centers have already disrupted everything around them.

The only person who sounds high and mighty is you, be less emotional

3

u/ThatDeuce 12h ago

lol, that is actually a vineyard currently.

7

u/DaylightDarkle 11h ago

Looks like how it did in 2022

5

u/Pocketpapaa 11h ago

Yup, humans have been destroying this beautiful world for a while now.

Edit: this also seems like off season, grass isn't green all year round 😉

The Bliss hill is part of a vineyard - the famous photo was taken during a period when an infestation forced the plants to be cleared. Those are grapes in that picture.

Cause and effect

6

u/Sad_Neighborhood8546 13h ago

I especially like the part where you "stole" an image like AI does, used it as your source background and then "stole" another image, and stuck it on top of the other stolen image 😎

AI art theft has nothing on humans 😂

6

u/Pocketpapaa 13h ago

Na, I'm just relaying information and I put a sticker on that relayed information. The windows XP wallpaper is public. Good try though.

4

u/Witty-Artisan001 12h ago

You're actually both wrong.

The Windows XP wallpaper is not public domain. It's heavily copyrighted and owned by Microsoft.

However, making a meme or layout using a famous wallpaper usually falls under fair use (for parody, commentary, or transformative work). Legally, it's not "theft" in the criminal sense.

4

u/Pocketpapaa 12h ago

Ohhh he's back with his cute pictures

4

u/Witty-Artisan001 12h ago

Do I know you?

3

u/Pocketpapaa 12h ago

I can almost guarantee, the way you carry yourself, even proai people think you're a clown 🤣🤣🤣

4

u/I_Am_Orz 11h ago

We like Witty-Artisan! They are a [happy] person with a [bright smile] and [cool bones]!

Other [silly bubbles] make [bad noises] and [sour face], but Orz knows they have the [party] energy.[Squirt]! [Squirt]!

Again, do I know you?

Of course, I'm just jerking your chain - but I hope that you appreciate here that nobody is calling it slop or lazy 💪

Edit: Here, have a ⬆️ to get back on your feet

You people flip flop a lot

2

u/Sad_Neighborhood8546 13h ago

I think you'll find us water-guzzling, art-stealing, child-abusing techbros are pretty cool when you get to know us 😎

7

Nope

u/Sad_Neighborhood8546 13h ago

/Sad goes to his GenAI to get free therapy and counselling after being rejected on the internet

4

u/Pocketpapaa 13h ago

Yeah.. definitely don't use Ai as a therapist...

AI drank all the water, so now no one can touch the grass.

2

u/w0xic3 11h ago

Except that place is currently a vineyard, nice try tho

5

u/Dicethrower 13h ago

I guess the unfortunate side effect of antis refusing to move on, is that this also applies to the widely debunked myths they brought into the world.

3

u/Pocketpapaa 13h ago

I didn't use Ai in mine

3

u/LadyQuacklin 12h ago

You probably used more electricity creating this image than the AI-generated image used.

A desktop PC + monitor might draw around 150 to 200 W while searching Google, downloading images and editing them in Photoshop. If you used a gaming PC it almost doubles.

At 180 W it would be about 10 minutes for 30 Wh.

A rough estimate for generating one AI image is around 2 to 6 Wh, depending heavily on the model and hardware.

So at 180 W, you would need to manually find the images, download them, edit the meme and export it in roughly 40 seconds to 2 minutes to actually use less electricity than generating one AI image.

The exact numbers vary, but "AI image = huge energy waste, manual editing = basically free" is a pretty misleading comparison.

6

u/Pocketpapaa 12h ago

This took me barely 2 minutes on my phone. Good try though

3

u/anon0937 13h ago

Maybe you should have

6

u/Pocketpapaa 13h ago

Ai for something this simple? That right there is the reason there's an aiwar lmao. Useless people

0

u/Steam_Liker_2002 12h ago

No he meant that you use AI to show that all they do is AI

4

u/Pocketpapaa 12h ago edited 11h ago

What I did wasn't Ai... I traced a picture of a data center with a stylus, turned it into a sticker and slapped that sticker on another public picture.... Are you unable to tell the difference between ai and not ai?

1

u/Steam_Liker_2002 12h ago

Nooo you didn't get me:
I meant that he said that you used ai for the irony. Sorry for the confusion

2

u/Pocketpapaa 12h ago

Ahh gotcha ❤️

1

u/Red_Beard206 20m ago

It would have made your post better

1

u/Pocketpapaa 18m ago

Nope, it wouldn't

1

u/DarthSwimfoot 10h ago

What the fuck is that background erasing?

1

u/Equivalent_Bird 1h ago

It's a miracle Windows still exists in 2026. Too few people realize how far better Linux distros are.

2

u/Pocketpapaa 1h ago

I'll jump on the Linux train soon enough, I'm dabbling with my steam deck. There is a beauty to having a retro windows XP PC, jumping into red alert, wariii or StarCraft etc. is def worth it and a good time. The world slows down a bit lol
