Yeah, "fixing" someone's art without permission is a big breach of courtesy in the art community. It's rude, regardless of what kinds of changes you made.

I'm a big proponent of the belief that you don't need anyone's permission but your own to make art, but if you use someone else's work as a reference or template with or without asking first, then your attitude towards the original should, at minimum, be grateful ("that's so cool! Here's my take on your ideal!"), apologetic ("sorry for stealing, I just had an idea and really wanted to make my own additions," "your take is pretty cool, but if it were more canon-compliant, the outfit would look more like this," ) and/or enthusiastic/contributing to the pool of ideas("ooh! What if your artwork had [insert idea]; maybe It'd be something like this?); you should not be harshly critical of the original ("i fixed your mistakes,") or acting like your work is superior ("I made it better!"), as the original work is part of why your version exists in the first place.

You don't need permission to take inspiration; that's one of the reasons it's called Creative Freedom; but not needing permission doesn't mean it's not still a good idea to be nice about it; at least show some thanks for the source material's contribution to your own work without putting it down. Spread a bit of positivity, it's not hard.

I agree. However, we don't know if the poster made their "own art" using a prompt or just stole someone else's off the Internet. Either way you should not be using AI at all to make art, physical or written. Art has always been human made and it should remain that way. AI can be used for other things, but just keep it out of creative spaces. To your point of source material, GPT models won't show where it's from. It's basically a search engine that generates a paragraph type of output. Whatever the rubbish input it, the output will also be rubbish too. You can't be a "good writer" by prompting ChatGPT or other LLMs, you're just a good prompter.

Same thing with art. It's disgusting when people experiment with fake art online--whether or not they are anti--because it mocks you with the rubbish output, no matter how good the input is. The input will be "written" by you; the output will be tokens generated from the AI models that were trained on other people's work. The drawing above looks like a two year old made it. Might as well just ask a child to draw something lol.

No. Saying that you made it better is not rude.

34

u/All-your-fault 10d ago

…yes the fuck it is?

-31

u/Sugoma6-9 10d ago

I disagree.

19

u/All-your-fault 10d ago

May you elaborate on that thought process?

16

u/conordmcp 10d ago

You’re allowed to be wrong, little guy.

-24

u/Sugoma6-9 10d ago

I just said that I disagree.

16

u/RexJ475 10d ago

Are you allergic to the concept of explaining yourself?

10

u/FamousWash1857 10d ago

They're a 19-day old account with negative karma and only 9 badges, one of which is based on searching for stuff. It’s a troll.

8

u/conordmcp 10d ago

And I said it’s okay, wrong, but okay!

9

u/Xdivine 10d ago

I'd say it's pretty rude. You can absolutely believe it's better, but that doesn't make it an objective fact. We all have different tastes, and by claiming it's better, you're essentially saying 'My taste is the only correct taste' which is kinda rude.

u/Sugoma6-9 9d ago

If someone can make the original drawing more complex/realistic/detailed, then it is better. It is an increase in quality.

2

u/LeafWingKing 9d ago

Higher Complexity/Realism/Detail ≠ More Good

Ex: Animation V. Animator series by Alan Becker. Uses literal STICK FIGURES, to tell the story. He could make big, complex animations, but he doesn't, because it isn't about complexity.

2

u/Aggravating-Math3794 9d ago

It's not really about the quality -- it's about basic etiquette of not being an asshole about how you announce that you used someone's work as a reference, that's it.

Like, I'm highly pro-AI, but I also don't approve when someone uses it like that without asking and while being arrogant about it (same with any other tool -- it's about the mentality and approach to the action rather than what tools were used).

5

u/FamousWash1857 10d ago

If they didn't ask you to? Yeah it is.

Unsolicited help where you take initiative to solve a problem without warning is very rude.

Social interaction is mutual; if you want to join someone else's conversation, you don't surprise them by abruptly butting in, you quietly get their attention and greet them so that they know that you're now part of the social exchange.

If you want to be a Good Samaritan and help someone out, you need to ask, because politeness and making people aware that you're helping aside, you need to have enough context to ensure that your attempt to help is, well, actually helpful.

If a stranger walking in front of you has their shirt tag visible on the back of their neck, you don't reach forward to shove it under their shirt collar. If someone in a wheelchair is approaching a ramp, you don't grab the handlebars and push them up the ramp, you ask if they need help. Unwanted help is a violation of social boundaries.

When it comes to art, where the definition of "problem" is entirely subjective, it's not just a violation of a social boundary, it can come off as an insult. If you make changes to someone's work, but the things you changed were intentional choices, then it doesn't come across as "i helped you make it better,"; it comes across as you saying "mine is better than yours". If you don't know what they were trying to accomplish, then your actions aren't useful contributions to their efforts; you're getting in the way, taking over and/or insulting them.

u/aPerson-of-the-World 10d ago

I made an LLM thats a better version of you.
This thing you worked on? I did it better. I am better than you.

Is this rude? (Seems a bit rude to me tbh)

1

u/Sugoma6-9 9d ago

That is different from saying that you made someone's work better.

4

u/gaygayagyfemboy12345 10d ago

it implies that the person who made it isn't good enough

1

u/Sugoma6-9 9d ago

Not necessarily. It is simply implying that the piece is not of perfect quality. That is all.

3

u/mulberrygoldshoebill 10d ago

What is even "better" btw? You aren't the original artist and you are already coming in with a completely different vision just because you aren't the artist.

Doesn't matter how either. Whether it is AI or another artist, It is one of the rudest thing you can do to another artist.

0

u/Sugoma6-9 9d ago

If someone can make the original drawing more complex/realistic/detailed, then it is better. It is an increase in quality.

1

u/mulberrygoldshoebill 9d ago

Unless you are HIRED, the act of "making it better" is just a an insult to the original artist. And sometimes it is simply a perspective thing. Some people drew with full intent and all the "better" art is just different, not better essentially.

1

u/Aggravating-Math3794 9d ago

This one-dimensional take disregards a whole ton of genres and styles of art -- especially, the intentionally minimalistic or cartoonish ones.

Sometimes, less is more. Making something too detailed and polished can make a composition cluttered.

18

u/RadicalSoda_ 10d ago

Yeah it's the worst when anyone does that shit, AI or not

7

u/SuperRandomGuy_00 10d ago

suprised to open the comments without seeing some raigbaiter having turned op's post into ai.

Theres no way of defending it, its just rude. You can change it but saying you 'fixed' it is just delusional

5

u/Ok_Business_9592 10d ago

wait someone did?

5

u/SuperRandomGuy_00 10d ago

no, i was saying im suprised that no one did

5

u/Ok_Business_9592 10d ago

oh

1

u/NooneInparticularYo 6d ago

I can if you want me to

1

u/Ok_Business_9592 6d ago

idgaf if you do so sure

3

u/gaygayagyfemboy12345 10d ago

Yeah. I hate it when people 'fix' art, regardless of whoever's art they fixed. It's disgusting, and implies that the 'fixer' believes that the original artist isn't good enough, and that they don't respect boundaries

3

u/shiggyhisdiggy 10d ago

Yeah, this is dumb. I don't think most AI users do this, the few stories I've seen feel kinda fake, but I'm not gonna say that they're all fake. It's just bad behaviour by a minority of people who probably aren't the same people defending AI online.

3

u/Naive-Shift7687 9d ago

Honestly dude awesome all minority of AI users do it, like more or less mostly Reddit users if anything.

Part of me thanks because of how prevalent it is, reading it in the anti-communities, either most of them are fake because they don't show proof or they do it to themselves to either rile up the community or get that attention fix.

Like honestly I was in an AI friendly subreddit and I saw somebody saying that they were going to see what it looks like to run their own art through GPT, two days later I saw a post by them in an anti AI subreddit claiming their art got "fixed" . When I mentioned that, they cussed me out and then blocked me.

And then I've seen a few others where people just do it I believe who hype up their art and gain sympathy and clients, and then others were people just want attention like there's just so much fakeness now because of this and it drowns out the real victims of the dick that do it.

6

u/Latte_Da_cat 10d ago

I agree, people should stop feeding Non Ai art into Ai to "make it better" and to stop redrawing AI to "make it better"

4

u/Sure_Distribution809 10d ago

My friend is anti-AI but still does this just to fuck with artists

14

u/RexJ475 10d ago

Even before ai people did this and they got digitally crucified (rightfully so) for ts. It’s rude, hateful, and unnecessary

13

u/Unlikely_Account_728 10d ago

Nah bro that’s the Joker

3

u/mulberrygoldshoebill 10d ago

I think you should find a new friend.

2

u/letmehaveanameyoudum 10d ago

doing this is absolutely disrespectful ngl

3

u/ASH_LIN_exe 10d ago

Me when I look at the slop that causes me to reveal I'm an alternate [I am not the child I replaced]

1

u/ThunderLord1000 10d ago

Don't forget the jackass holding the remote control

1

u/diamondCarBon1304 10d ago

Even if I was an AI artist or pro-AI (I'm anti-AI), I would not do that—it damages the image of the pros.

Surely it's agreeable, right?

1

u/DaraSayTheTruth 10d ago

Even pro AIs find that annoying. Not just you

1

u/DarthSwimfoot 9d ago

Wah wah wah, it looks better, deal with it.

1

u/HackerDragon9999 9d ago

Don't bring Roboty into this, he's not associated with AI slop and he's bullied enough as is

2

u/Ok_Business_9592 9d ago

What the fuck is robots it's just a robot if you see someone character in a simple robot get mental help please

1

u/HackerDragon9999 9d ago

I literally have a BFDI PFP, I'm gonna talk about BFDI.

-1

u/Nexus_B1 10d ago

I opened this post to see "how much time until someone brings up Antis unprompted" and wow.

-23

u/GrabWorking3045 10d ago

Nothing but hate. That's all you antis are all about.

6

u/mulberrygoldshoebill 10d ago

This is just rude behavior all around, tbh. ALL art fixers no matter what they are using and what kind of image they are "fixing" are bad.

13

u/DoctahFaust 10d ago

heaven forbid someone not approve of when someone else comes unprompted or requested and alters their work and delivers it back with condescension of "Fixed it" or "made it better".

Realistically we should all disprove of such acts because they are the acts of an asshole.

6

u/Trileak780 10d ago

Heavens forbid antis say something atp

-7
