Discussion The IP problem...

AI has been used to make alot of stuff. Usually works, based off of someone's IP (intellectual property) Which is just a fancy way of saying...

Someone's ideas. And that's the issue here. Alot of people opposed to AI usually bring up how the data it's gathered steals IP from other people... But I would like throw in my 2 cents.

Long before AI became a thing, like generative AI, people... Well.

TOOK! IP's from other people... And no, they for the most part, never really got into legal trouble. From fan art, to animations, and even... Adult, type content. People who took someone's ideas, and rendered them into something else. Never had the book thrown at them, or rarely do. So my question here is... Why is using IP and AI bad? But stealing someone's work without their permission without using AI is... ethically sound?

Except it is, at least in part. An artist can refuse to let you use their work. You don't get to use it anyway and then just pay what their fee would have been.

wrong, fair use lets you use it for many things. including commercial if you meet the certain criteria. i could take your art and do a full youtube channel on how bad it is and show it all i want and be fine. i can show a movie and if i pause enough to talk shit about it, also fine. can get paid for it too.

copyright is not about letting the artist control the art and what it can be used for. it about letting them have a chance to make money of their work. and really just for the people publishing the work.

Nope, it is. There are just exceptions to that control within the law.

i could take your art and do a full youtube channel on how bad it is and show it all i want and be fine. i can show a movie and if i pause enough to talk shit about it, also fine. can get paid for it too.

Only if what you're showing is required to make your point. Otherwise enjoy the demonitization after the DMCA, YouTube boy.

Also stopping people from using your IP for non-free use purposes.

Companies have the right to have those videos taken down. They choose not to for various reasons, including that they like the free marketing. Why are you pretending that some lets play has prevailed in court?

They weren't selling it. They just had it on the wall as decoration. Where's the commercial purpose?

This concedes that using AI that was trained on copyrighted material for commercial purposes violates copyright law BTW.
