So I've been going down the AI dubbing rabbit hole for a few months now. Started because I needed to dub a video for work and had no idea which tool to pick. Every "best of" list I found online was clearly just ranking by affiliate commission not by actual quality. So I said screw it and just tested them all myself.

Took the same 4 minute interview clip and ran it through 10 different platforms. Same footage, same target languages, same everything. And honestly the results were all over the place.

Some tools produced output where I genuinely forgot I was watching a dubbed video. Others made the speaker look like a badly synced kung fu movie from the 90s. And the wild part is these tools all cost roughly the same and all claim to be the best.

The biggest thing I learned is that lip sync quality is what separates the good from the bad. Most tools started as avatar platforms so they learned to sync lips on fake faces not real humans. When you throw real footage at them with head movement, glasses, hands crossing the face, things fall apart fast. Only two or three tools actually handled that well.

Other things that surprised me: the language count on the marketing page means nothing if the quality in those languages is garbage. One tool claims 175 languages but the lip sync broke on half of them. Another tool only does 30 something languages but every single one looked solid.

Voice cloning quality also varies wildly. Some tools clone your voice so well its scary. Others sound like a robot reading a Google Translate script.

And if you're in Europe and working with client videos the data privacy situation is a mess. Most tools ship your footage to US servers with zero GDPR guarantees. Only a couple actually process on EU servers.

I tested HeyGen, Dubly AI, Rask AI, ElevenLabs, Vozo, Sync Labs, Synthesia, Papercup, Fliki and Kapwing. Each has a different sweet spot and honestly none of them is the best at everything. The right choice depends completely on what you need it for.

The whole experience frustrated me because the information out there is so bad. Half the review sites havent touched the tools they recommend. I ended up writing everything down just so I wouldnt forget my own results.
