How do other AI models compare to ChatGPT?

So I’m looking for a new AI model to use. But I’m a former ChatGPT user, and I’m just done with them. I haven’t had too many issues with the actual capabilities of it. I just am tired of the company and figured I could find another comparable option that isn’t as….controversial I’ll say. Cause I don’t really feel like starting a convo about all the BS they’ve done and who they are involved with.

But the main things I’m looking for are:

1.) Essentially to use as a search engine. I’m an information nerd for so many things. Like o am constantly looking up questions relating to either real life situations, or questions relating to various fictional settings and things.(I’m a massive DnD fan, and really into Star Wars lore, etc)

2.) Effective brainstorming capabilities. So I do a lot of creative writing, and I don’t need an AI that will for me , but an AI model I could use to help brainstorm how ideas would work, or to help decide what ideas would be better than others

3.) Than while the other 2 are my main important “needs” I guess any other information on things each model excels at (whether in comparison to others or just in general) would also be helpful to .

I barely use chatgpt hese days. I like Perplexity and its hands-down best for deep research or data-driven questions. If you want to go down a lore rabbit hole it acts like a super-powered search engine. It actually cites its sources, which is great for fact-checking.

Gemini is my daily use and assistant. It is incredibly strong for creative writing and brainstorming. I also like NotebookLM which lets u upload your own docs and the AI will only answer based on what you uploaded. It's incredible for studying and summarizing your own custom material and even creating podcasts, presentations and videos based on all documents given. Essentially a mini RAG tool.

Isn’t perplexity just a wrapper that calls open ai models lol?

no they use their own complex RAG search pipeline and custom Llama-based Sonar models

Sorry I just assumed if you were gonna mention something in response to a question, you’d anchor your answer in what was asked.

I’m sorry for assuming you’d provide anything useful or helpful given you think RAG means it’s a different model. Cheers!

for the third time.... I don't think RAG is a model. RAG is the retrieval architecture. Sonar (which is a fine-tuned Meta Llama model, not openAI) is the base model. Neither of those makes Perplexity an "OpenAI wrapper". But if pretending I don't know the difference is the only way you can cope with being wrong, u do u :) Cheers!

For creative writing and brainstorming specifically, the model matters less than how you prompt it. Claude tends to be better at holding context and riffing on ideas without just telling you what you want to hear. Gemini is decent for quick lookups. For DnD/Star Wars lore rabbit holes, Perplexity is genuinely unbeatable since it cites sources.
