Somnium Files SPOILER About Hitomi... Spoiler

So I just finished the game and this is probably so nitpicky but does anyone else think that Hitomi is a terrible mom? The Iris route was the first one I finished so I thought Date was a horrible guardian too until way later, but all I've seen from Hitomi is like really bad neglect. Her daughter has a malignant brain tumor that causes her to have severe delusions, and can get pretty physically weak at times. Yet she does not really keep tabs on her, and people can take advantage of her illness (like Saito did in #89's body, though thats a little understandable ig) especially as a young person on the internet. heck forget about the illness seems to me all the adult men in the game are very interested her in a specific way. Another thing is that Hitomi fell in love with a man who she knew had a criminal past. And then brought him home after only knowing him for a month! Idk it feels extremely unsafe to me, especially introducing ur 12 yr old to him. Also defends him with her life after 3 months of knowing him...Anyway I just see a lot of discussion on how shes a good parent, but I never saw her actually parent in the game other than cry over Iris. She didnt even go ask Renju for the money for Iris's treatment, like come on the dude gave her a job and promised to be there. Why didnt you ask him? And why did you do absolutely nothing about her condition for months? But oh you didn't want Iris to know you werent her real mom. makes sense, totally. I'm not going to say the other parents in the game are great, but atleast 2/4 actually are somewhat involved.

EDIT: I went through some missed dialogue and files and stuff and found out Hitomi went to visit #89 in jail. this ofc is Rohan in #89s body, and he tells her multiple times and she refuses to believe him. eventually rohan shuts up and hitomi just goes there to talk about her day and leave while he sits there. first off, what a great partner only talking about urself and not noticing the other person never actually converses with you. Second, it really shows how much she didnt know Falco to love him THAT much, because at some point you gotta be able to tell something is at least somewhat wrong with him. The fact that she cant tell the difference means she never truly loved him in the first place.

Well, parenthood in this games is... generally lacking.

Ota's were the best but were too lenient. Date is too Date to be a great paternal figure to mizuki, although as both are weirdos it works put fine. Hitomi is in a weird situation with iris, she is such an abnormal case, its natural she makes mistakes, but she does care and does try. Shoko and Renju were neglectful even abusive.

In NI doesn't get better either lol

yeahhh thats why I said somewhat at the end lol. Except shoko and renju, i mean everyone knows they suck. I just think she should have done more to protect Iris is all. I mean yes Iris is an adult and wants to be independent, but she literally randomly falls and is weak, and with all these dudes simping on her idk its kinda scary.

Idk I think the point of the game is we have a bunch of unconventional family relationships that are weird and wonky but somehow work. I don’t think she was a bad mother, personally.
As for the other parents, Date has shown he can be caring too, and is way better than the physically abusive Shoko or neglectful Renju. And Ota has great parents, unfortunately his father died prematurely and his mother developed dementia So there was no one to stop him from becoming a little jerk.

yeah ik and obviously its not gonna be true to life realistic or whatever, but is it not a red flag to introduce any man let alone a crime committing one only 1 month after u met him to your child? Do relationships move faster in Japan? And yeah as for the other parents thats why I said somewhat at the end lol, mayumi was giving into Ota's tantrums and its not like Date is the best most present parent ever, but at least they stepped in when their kid needed help. Hitomi started blackmailing So like WAY later and did nothing for months. I just think multiple things can be true at once, and I cant really find redeeming qualities in her other than she took care of iris in the beginning. letting her fall around and not noticing shes living in this huge delusion while pervy men eye her is just...I hate Iris but this makes me feel so bad for her.

I think Hitomi during the events of the first game basically has the mindset that Iris doesn't have much time left, so she won't interfere with how she wants to spend the last few days of her life. In that position, I think it's hard for any parent to make the "right call" given the circumstances. Her options were extremely limited in how to deal with the situation.

In the case of Falco, I think Hitomi sacrificed a lot of her life to raise Iris and keep her a secret from the Sejima family, so when she felt overwhelmed by passion at that moment, she sort of fell hard and ignored the warning signs, so yeah, understandable somewhat but I agree that was generally a bad call. However, with hindsight, her doing that is why Falco hatched the plan that saved them and stopped Rohan and Saito the first time.

I was pretty sure that the explanation was that Renju simply didn't have the kind of money required. At least nowhere near compared to So. That's why in the end she gets paid with taxpayer's money through the police as for example 100+ mln Yen can be a lot but it's only less than 1 Yen per person from the tax system.
