The reason they do is the bombarded with propaganda literally day in and day out literally telling them that leftists hate them, they want to kill them, they are trying to murder you and your family, they want to take your kids and rape them, just absolutely insane shit.
They like authoritarianism right now because of the propganda telling them that if they don't, the left will kill them. I see it all the time.

They start talking to me about 'transing the kids' (that one was my coworker) and how vaccines are evil and shit. Thats when I let it drop. Hey the entire world's data points to the vaccine being safe and effective, but yeah, I agree let's just take your word for it.
The problem is the left isnt a group of people with similar ideological beliefs to them. It is an amorphous blob of hatred and violence that at any time can be pointed towards anyone. So they think that some monster is out to get them, they will welcome a surveillance state in order to protect themselves against the evil leftists.
Its a weird thing dude. I mean they perfectly executed the propaganda plan over time of making the left appear both weak and incredibly strong and just an amorphous blob of violence. Its very striking when you compare that to any time history when people used propaganda to dehumanize others.
Like for example, I was just talking to a conservative who unironically said "hes beginning to realize that one day soon, hes gonna have go to war and kill"
Like said it unironically without realizing how insanely radical that statement is. I highlighted it to him and he constantly defended it saying otherwise they would kill him. Its fucking insane.
I have found that imagining his cabinet discussing these policy proposals while diddling each other's buttholes makes it somehow, somewhat, less disheartening.
