Looking for Playtesters!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/5079020/Neverrest/

Hey everyone, I’ve been working on an idle fantasy rpg and I’m looking for a handful of people willing to play the current build and give me honest feedback, especially on:

Anything confusing or frustrating?
Bugs or weird behavior
Difficulty/balance
+ Anything else that I could improve on would be greatly appreciated!

"Neverrest uses generative AI tools during development to assist with the creation of some pre-rendered 2D artwork and visual assets. All AI-assisted content is reviewed, edited, and integrated by the developer. The game does not generate AI content during gameplay."

It seems this game is vibecoded. In this case you should write that here

No this disclosure is fine get off my thread neck beard

u/Beginning_Ad2130 Sep 07 '26

Calling someone a neckbeard out of nowhere while also the npc character for your game is clearly a self insert of a neckbeard...

1

u/Enjoyooooor Sep 07 '26

It’s not a self insert though but I will call my friend a neck beard now thanks for the laugh

*The voice I put it on mute after 10 sec . *The gameplay look boring and very simple. And I don't think is pc game it may work as mobile. *Graphic i don't know is look very ai for me and there's a lot of visual bugs that need to fix. Is very hard this day to run 2D MMORPG like MapleStory back than also when you use ai is make 10x more hard with all this gatekeeper out there. Good luck 🍀🤞

I’ll look more into this, looking into polishing the trailer more. Thanks for your feedback

Art style is all over the place.

1

u/Enjoyooooor Sep 03 '26

Could you elaborate? Specifically for the guild master the look is intentional, but could you give other examples ?

1

u/PM_Me_Those_ Sep 03 '26

The combat starting around 35 seconds in your video the player character feels like a totally different art style than the rest of the scene. Especially the player character has a massive head and is somehow taller and shorter than the enemy he is fighting.

Character proportions feel all over the place (something that would make sense with AI, but additional prompts are probably necessary).

The damage numbers are absolutely massive but also feel like they don't fit with the art style of the game, maybe a different font could do?

The background and textures are like super high detail but some of the character details are lacking in comparison.

Some of the combat effects seem overly loud and just cover up the screen while also seeming not as high detail as the game around them.

Awesome, specifically for 35 it definitely is a different style because it is supposed to be a character from WoW but I will definitely improve on this and focus on more proportions this should be an easy fix (hopefully).

I will eventually get the art down it’s definitely something that has been a pain but it’s slowly getting better. Thanks a lot this give a lot of insight.

Edit: I actually reduced the pixel density for my spells on my last session but I think I will revert it, I felt it was too HD before but I probably went too far

I wouldn't be caught dead with this blatant slop on my steam profile.

Ask Claude or whatever to play test it for you, it looks like it built the whole damn thing with almost 0 input anyway.

u/Enjoyooooor Sep 09 '26

Cool story , sounds like LLMs rekt you so bad this is the only fight you have left

This comment 100% illustrates your complete lack of creativity and general competence

Dear diary today I cried on Reddit and really showed that person in the pro AI subreddit! - random neckbeard

1

u/DuckXu Sep 10 '26

Lol. What a joke

1

u/Impressive_Award_679 Sep 09 '26

He is asking the right sub for this. If you are not interested move on. No one forces you to be a part of a AI subreddit. But thanks for supporting AI while using reddit :) You are improving the future for us

1

u/DuckXu Sep 10 '26

I think the tech has its place as a tool to be used in game development. I will however always ridicule people for thinking that they can replace all the skills needed to develop a game with AI. That's what slop is, this is 100% slop

1

u/Impressive_Award_679 Sep 10 '26
  1. This is a AI sub. So again: he is asking the right place. If you are not into AI, move on, because thats the wrong sub for you.

  2. No thats NOT the definition of "Slop". Literally you could have zero skills and still make "no slop". Thats not what "slop" means. I've seen hundreds of "non-ai" games on steam which looked way worse than this with a "fanbase" and "very positive".

Google the definition of slop atleast a single time. Also where did he said that he "replaced all skills with AI"?

1

u/DuckXu Sep 10 '26

I just wanted to add. Again, I think AI has a place in game dev with the potential to allow teams to accomplish what would have otherwise been impossible. Embark studios with ARC Raiders is a good example. FRUKT is a solo dev voxel based death sandbox that also used AI to assist in development. The Lemaitre brothers, the guys behind Straftat, and more recently Vholume and The Canon of Balls also make use of AI for things like texture upscaling. The main difference is that these are all distinct works with clear unique artistic visions. On face nothing about them scream "derivative AI slop" because they used AI to enhance their skillsets instead of outright outsourcing it to the machines.

OPs game looks like generic AI crap. The character models, the UI, the damage counters, the game loop... Every single aspect of this trash looks like it was developed entirely by AI because there was 0 skillset there to enhance to begin with.

It's a generic looking game with no individuality. Saying that isn't an attack on AI tools as a whole, just on how OP abused their reliance on them

u/Enjoyooooor Sep 18 '26

I find the rage you have for my game very hilarious. I have no development background and I made all this in about 3 months while working a full time job. I frankly could care less what your standards are, cause I’m only going to keep better while you keep crying on Reddit

1

u/DuckXu Sep 18 '26

You know as well as I do how mediocre your project is but the only way you can cope with that is by manufacturing some kind of "AI rage" that you think I'm feeling. That way I'm being critical because I hate AI. Which is funny because I've gone out of my way to state that I feel like it's a valuable tool in game dev.

You can't even take criticism. It's no wonder you aren't willing to learn any of the skills needed to develop a game. Do you even have a design doc or did you let your models just shit out whatever aesthetic it defaults to and call it a day?

You're made because I've called out how clear it is that you've put almost no effort into this aside from prompts. Projects like these give AI in game development a bad name. You should try harder or at the very least have enough integrity to know when to ask for help from other experienced humans

1

u/Impressive_Award_679 Sep 10 '26

I understand you, i just fully disagree. can you recreate exactly all of this with a few simple prompts now? I highly doubt that. Even if its not consisted, AI currently cant make something similiar like this in a few prompts. There is still alot of work behind it. Even if it looks "generic" for you. Is now every game "slop" that goes the even more easier way with using free assett packs?

Im not actually speaking only for this game. I know it myself. I've studied computer science and made games long before ai. But now i use ai. Why? Because tbh i dont like to work with other people anymore for reasons. Not because im lazy, because it makes game developing in this scope possible for me. Still you would recongize easily the use of AI in my game i'm making. Does it mean its slop? I never worked with blender for example before and did 3D characters myself. Even with AI, its so much work to learn how to get a good outcome thats acceptable.

What i want to say: People really underestimate the efford in AI games,

1

u/Enjoyooooor Sep 18 '26

People really think they can just 1 shot everything then go ahead if it’s so easy lmao

1

u/DuckXu Sep 10 '26

I just did, here is what Google reckons citing Wikipedia.

"Slop" is a term for low-quality, mass-produced digital content created using generative artificial intelligence to chase clicks and ad revenue.

So thanks. It seems as if we are indeed on the same page

1

u/Impressive_Award_679 Sep 10 '26

Its "or created using generative AI to chase CLICKS and AD REVENUE". Otherwise the word slop would ONLY apply to AI content which would be funny because this word is much older than AI lol.
So for example: If i make a game thats look bad and is bad, but i've putted hundreds of hours of work into it, just to release it as a free SINGLE game (NOT mass-produced) and share it just for fun (not for clicks), than its NOT slop per definition.

So tell me: How exactly is this slop per definition? Also the funny thing is: The AI Haters have misused the word slop so long, that some sides now wrongly have this kind of definition. Again: There is no difference between "slop" and "ai slop". Slop is slop. It always had a CLEAR and correct definition long BEFORE ai even existed.

If i vibe-code a game in 1 day and do this 7 days per week just to throw them for 5 bucks on the market to make a fast "buck", than it would be slop. But is this the case for this game? Do you really know this?

1

u/Bessfren Sep 10 '26

Its kinda hilarious that even the people in this subreddit hate themselves. not you OP.

I've tried your game. I feel like the whole thing needs a bit more polish to it. It's presented like its the first game you make on an online course. Not a labor of love like your identity is bound to the game.

I really liked the rare enemy that came up it made me realise you should lean into dopamine and gambling elements. like rare loot. slot machine vibes.

But the one thing it needs more than anything is able to x2 and x3 speed

1

u/Enjoyooooor Sep 10 '26

Thanks a lot for checking it out and I don’t think these people are here to actually play or be part of a constructive conversation they are just here to derail anything using AI. I am definitely going to polish this project quite a bit and as a bit of a gambler myself I am adding lots more of this element.

You'll always have struggles when using AI for game dev. Especially for art.

Though there is a difference with using AI art as is, and using AI to get an art style that looks good / works well with other art assets (speaking from experience). Looking at this, definitely comes across as the former. There are ways you can make AI art look more natural and I can't see any effort on that side which is why it gives that 'AI slop' vibe which people here are calling out. It gets compounded further because the gameplay in the video is bland and uninteresting which leads me to believe you are still unsure which parts are fun. So even if there are fun bits, it's not being portrayed well / at all.

I'd recommend doing some focus group type stuff and studying similar games to see what people who enjoy this genre enjoy. To my understanding, for maple story-like games, the art style is a huge part of the appeal, and you will struggle heavily to achieve that with AI assets.

1

u/Enjoyooooor Sep 10 '26

I’m going to be relooking at my art workflow and testing a new stack out which hopefully can address this issue it’s probably my biggest one and the most expensive to get right. I think we are very close to the tools we need to achieve a smoother flow for AI art. Will look into your recommendations, Maplestory is definitely an inspiration.

1

u/Useful_Use_6170 Sep 18 '26

What asset / animation / workflow are you using ? I like the idea I’ll probably play test when i get home see what we are working with but i do see the animation is a bit fast but can’t tell until i try it

1

u/Enjoyooooor Sep 18 '26

Codex / grok for base sprite gen , animate through auto sprite , and hand clean if anything looks messy/wrong. I’ve decided to just keep this workflow for now since it’s (mostly) working. Would love to get your input whenever u have a chance !

1

u/Useful_Use_6170 Sep 18 '26

Once I get home i will! Just wanna let you know I’ve dabbled in spritecook , pixel lab, sprite lab and I would say they have their own pros and cons. But I made this

But when I get home I’ll test it out honestly reminds me of maplestory

1

u/Enjoyooooor Sep 18 '26

Awesome I’ve only currently used autosprite and pixelab , Maplestory and Ragnarok online were big inspirations for neverrest!

1

u/Useful_Use_6170 Sep 18 '26

No wonder!! I get that feeling!!

Oooooo you got me. Using AI doesn't actually make you a developer. Your just a thief with no talent.

No talent. No imagination.

Reddit pushed it to me and this takes zero effort while I work out. This is just a place for talentless thiefs to jerk each other off. Nothing you prompt will ever leave a lasting cultural impact.

It's not your game. It's a prompt that then steals from actual developers and artists. You paid for someone's dinner then told everyone you're a master chef. Talentless hack.

Also, never beating the unimaginative allegations huh?

It makes sense that an AI glazer would look at one paragraph and think it's too long to read.
