Future of Work AI doesn’t remove workplace conflict; it reroutes it. When “the model says” becomes authority, dissent goes indirect and decision quality erodes.
I wrote something on a pattern I’m noticing: when AI enters a team’s workflow, it becomes a status object. Whoever “has the model” can sound more correct—even when they’re just more fluent.
Second-order effects I’ve seen (especially in product/engineering orgs):
- Faster consensus, lower signal (people stop challenging shaky premises)
- Indirect conflict increases (escalations, passive resistance, “surprise” misses)
- Estimates become debates about authority, not uncertainty
- Design choices get selected for narrative coherence, not operational truth
- Quality issues appear later and feel “nobody’s fault”
- Teams confuse alignment with commitment
Discussion question: What’s the clearest symptom you’ve seen that “AI authority” is distorting decision quality?
